    Thanks for the memories 👍🏻. As my gift when I graduated from college, my Grandmother took me from Chicago to Los Angeles about the Super Chief ... in a compartment. If only Amtrak could be that good (it can’t) I’d gladly give up flying now that I’m retired and have the time.

    I absolutely love those Santa Fe travel videos!
    I have a question: Why does Periscope Films always have a clock at the bottom of all their videos? Just curious. ☺

    • @PeriscopeFilm
      @PeriscopeFilm  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, so that they can identify the material they need to license, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
      In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous TH-cam users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do.
      Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

    1962. 12 years young. From the lily white Buffalo suburb of Hamburg, New York to a then still safe Palo Alto, California. Dad transferred for a 6-month assignmet. 6 of us. In a 1959 land yacht Buick. Carefull. Don't cut yourself on the fins putting luguage in the trunk. Eye-opening experience for an almost teenager. Pay attention to the train passengers. We followed a fair part of the Santa Fe route... on Route 66. Look how society was, now is. Some good, for some. A lot now worse, for many. Well, at least 10 years later (1970) I won the first Vietnam War Draft Lottery, a 'just' system if ever there were one, and served and saved the world for democracy.... at the point of a gun. The illusion of someone's 1950's America now history gone. The stark reality of the elite's American Empire perpetual war industry and reality serving who for what? Now, at 73 years young and wiser, seeing it all so much clearer here in retirement. RT sends, envía, Colonia Centro Histórico, Puebla, México... Geez! What people hear, see and believe!

    This film was released in 1946, as the footage of the Tournament of Roses Parade {21:26) is from New Year's Day 1946. The theme of the parade that year was "Unity and Peace".

    What a pity that rail travel in the 2000s+ is more or less done by commuters and day trippers, the airlines have the monopoly on holiday and experience travel. Even here in the United Kingdom, birthplace of the railways, trains are aimed at the commuter and short journey travelling, long gone are the overnight sleeper trains (although I have heard they are making a comeback) the boat trains (board in London get of in France etc) Pullman cars offering fine dining, no, it’s all rush rush rush, no room to sneeze let alone sit, overpriced pre-packaged sandwiches, coffee and tea that tastes awful and is as warm as gazpacho, soft and alcoholic drinks in cans and plastic glasses, and getting a meal is reserved for 1st class only, and ticket prices are absolutely extortion, you can fly for less, in half the time and be guaranteed a seat, thank goodness there are heritage railway lines that you can still enjoy the “golden age of rail travel”.
