My mum had a drinking problem, throughout my brothers and my childhoods. Our childhood consisted of trying to cover it up while dad worked away. My older brother was 12 when he walked in to find her fitting because of withdrawal. Dad tried sending her to AA meetings always found her in the pub. I lost my brother in 2018, she got worse with drink after that. In 2019 she took her own life. We will never know if she took her own life intentionally or not. I will never understand how someone could choose alcohol over their own children. This song reminds me of her but it’s bittersweet. If you’ve got a parent with a drinking problem, hang in there because you may not feel it but you are stronger then you know. Even when you feel your alone in this battle you aren’t there’s other kids out there going through similar. We’re rooting for you, I’m rooting for you. You’ve got this.
I had a similar situation. Mom had a huge alcohol problem basically out of nowhere. I was 19 at the time and that was the first I’ve ever experienced that my whole life. She thankfully came out of the right side and has been great ever sense. I can feel this song.
carlo disabatino addiction can do so much damage and leave a lasting impact on kids, but from what you’ve said you appear to be a pretty sound dude. Continue to own it. Be proud of how far you come.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I have a "Gloria" in my life whom I love and worry about constantly. I don't know how many times I've asked her "When is enough, enough?" Heart strings tugged man.
I listened to the Lumineers for the first time traveling the length of Vietnam by train. It is the quintessential travel sound. Great memories and always brings back a nostalgic sense that I always appreciate. Thank you.
I'm still hoping to find someone who can sing The Lumineers' songs with me. This band is a rare type of gem. Being able to sing the lyrics of their songs is a privilege. :)
I first listened to The Lumineers 7 years ago on the way home from my great grandmothers funeral, Ho Hey began playing on the radio and I fell in love with them instantly. They always evoke so many long forgotten memories.
Funny, I've been puzzling over this line... I don't understand it. Can you explain? I mean I get that the narrator of the song is saying this but...why would the subject (the person the song is about) be lying awake for the narrator? And why would the narrator be hoping that's not the case? And why is this situation so meaningful?
@@deandeck I think it's to say that the narrator is lying awake due to him being worried for Gloria's well-being. They seem to be mentioning Gloria's use of alcohol throughout the song. No one enjoys lying awake b/c of stress or worry for a loved one, hence why he says he prays she doesn't lie awake for him (also). As it's troubling. Wonderful song and very deep story!
@@deandeck Maybe b/c she is an addict, and is aware that it might be affecting her family.. just my two cents. But music can be interpreted in a multitude of ways :)
Me and my sister were given up for fostering after I was born, because my parents were alcoholics and couldn't look after us. My mom and dad were walking home from a bar, drunk, late one night and my mom ended up losing her footing and fell into a bog drain at the side of the road. She drowned that night. My dad died when I was 12 from lung cancer and other ailments from addiction. I spent a lot of time in the hospital waiting for him to wake up from a coma but he never really did. I'm now 17, and I found this song a couple days ago, and it speaks volumes to me. "no one said enough is enough"
Agree! Like if those memories happened in a past that actually has never existed or sth... i get what you mean... it is difficult to explain, but beautiful, oh so beautiful to feel ✨
@Evan Snyder but man, the Lumineers have new album, the strunbellas too, foster the people has released 2 songs and there will be more is good enough for me, and if there's music you don't like just ignore it like I do ;)

The Lumineers aren't musicians. They are the wish ones who tell the stories of others. They are the ones who believe all is good when there is bad. This isn't music. This is a story.
I think ur wrong. They are musicians because they make my ears feel good, with how they play their instruments, and "kaito", why dont you make some music
I absolutely love this song. But the most beautiful moment of this video is at 1:49. There are no lyrics, but the subtle, powerful visual is incredibly moving. In this shot alone, you can see the beauty of Gloria peak through with the slightly askew black bar showing a slim window at the happiness she feels with her children. There is no pain, no addiction. Just love. Just a moment of clarity into what's important in life. It's mesmerizing and hauntingly wonderful
I’m lucky to have a mom who is recovering well from alcoholism. I’ve had my own struggles and I’m recovering from my own drug addictions, but damn this song hits home. Reminds me of all the times she was struggling with alcohol and I watched it all

Can't wait to see them for the 4th time in Manchester this November. I've loved their music for the last 7 years. I'm sure this isn't the first comment like this but I had to say I had my first court date for a dui. I have no record and have been fighting for help for a drug addiction. Just had to thank you for sharing that with the world and for helping me

This song helps me see the lie that I believed for years.. that it was my fault. The many nights I prayed and I still do. We are only in control of our own actions and God loves us enough to have mercy.
Song is just as simple as ordinary day of our lives. Glory to The Lumineers for sharing a sheer sound among us - it is much better to be grateful for every moment with that kind of songs.
WHO IS GLORIA? Someone's widow? Did she struggle with drug and alcohol addiction? Did she die from this or something else? Was she a single mother? Did she break someone's heart? Was she lost in the shuffle and fell through the cracks of life? I don't know, I might never find out. But I've been dancing around the house singing this song for the past few hours. Laughing, crying, living. Thank you, Lumineers. I can't wait to hear the rest of this album...
ColdAsHe11 this is just a guess, but for some reason I feel like it could be about Any Winehouse. She was a drug addict and drank. But, if she isn’t Gloria who is? Well, I think it could be something that goes with the story of Cleopatra, Ophelia, Angela, etc. I’m hoping a music video comes out and has some sort of explanation. Maybe other songs released would help us know. We may never know, but I hope we do someday.
if anyone ws wondering whats the chord and lyric it is: B E B Gloria, I smell it on your breath B E B Gloria, booze and peppermint G#m F# E B Gloria, no one said enough is enough //Just repeat it Gloria, they found you on the floor Gloria, my hand was tied to yours And, Gloria, did you finally see that enough is enough? I think we all have a Gloria or maybe we are Gloria. I hope the best for you. Hang in there, i am 15 years clean, it hard evey day. Peace to you Josh. And to everyone who lost someone to this disease, addiction is a unkind bitch but it can be beat.
Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. "I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me." Because Gloria is the mom in this story, and she's an alcoholic. And her child is up at night, hoping their mom isn't up (drinking) because of them. Heart-breaking.
this song reminds me of my dad, my entire childhood/life he was a manulipitive, alcoholic, deadbeat dad. he would constantly verbally abuse my mom and i’d always have to comfort her while she was crying and screaming about how horrible he was when i was only 6 years old. i had to comfort her all the way until i was 14 and he eventually died from liver cancer when i was 15. eventually my mom admitted she was always too scared to leave him and i learned that he was also physically abusive
You guys are my favorite band EVER. I love every song and every video, too. Your music speaks to me in ways that no other band has ever done... it takes me to a really happy place and I must admit that I love it there ✨ Your music, sound and lyrics, goes straight to my soul. Keep being as magical as you've always been. Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷✨💛
Amazing band! The Lumineers are amazing musicians and singer-songwriters, and it is extremely difficult or impossible to understand why a person would not like them. Honestly, I have not found anyone who doesn't like The Lumineers, even if they don't become one of their favorite bands. Still, there are all kinds of people and musical tastes in this crazy world. We must respect other musical tastes, even if we don't get them. The Lumineers play their instruments beautifully, their voices are raw and soothing, and their lyrics are real-life stories that people can relate to directly or indirectly. Many of their songs make one want to clap and dance; others make you reflect and feel sad, and there’s nothing wrong with it. All kinds of human emotions are covered in their music, which is genuine, honest, and good to many people and me. 🙂
My grandmother's name was Gloria. She died at the beginning of this year. We were close but I was not able to be there for her final days. Thanks, Luminers for making music that evokes all the precious beautiful and clumsy memories I had with her. Abuela te amo por siempre. 🌷
Lost my mother to alcohol when I was 14. She pretty much died of organs failure and had hepatitis B, she only drank for ten years...but I guess she had her reasons to stay high always. I'll have this song in my play list now on and will think of her always as it'll play. I miss you mother, hope we'll meet someday....
I cant help but to think of my mum as I listen to this song. My mom was a great lady, talented ,charismatic, pretty, list goes on. EXCEPT she's a terrible alcoholic. Funny thing is my Grandma, her mom who's also an alcoholic, her name was Gloria. The story's I could tell about my mum and Grandma. It's a rough road
@gloriasol8197 Do you like this song? Just heard it for the first time. Not a fan. The other Gloria song I hate is the one by Laura Branigan. But I do like the one by U2,Van Morrison and The Midnight. So it's not all bad.
@gloriasol8197 I just listened to 3 other ' Gloria' songs I had been unaware of. They are " Going Home to Gloria" by Roy Orbison," Spearhead's " Gloria" and GreenDay" Viva la Gloria". The song that influenced my Mother's name choice though was by The Cadillacs. I hope you find plenty of good songs with or without Gloria in them.
Well I can relate to this song.. my mom was a recovering alcoholic, died bang in the middle of the summer holidays, right after we’d been on holiday. Turns out she couldn’t help it and went to the alcohol, which she just couldn’t take. And my dad is nowhere to be, so I’m now living with my grandparents. I feel terribly guilty writing this, but they’re more of my parents than she was. I will always love her and thank her for giving me such a good childhood, but she knew herself, I think. The night before she passed, she wrote a letter, saying that she wanted me to be raised by my grandparents, and they could give me a good life of what she never could.
Amber Louise I’m sorry for your loss and that your dad isn’t around at the moment💗. Also, you shouldn’t feel guilty about feeling like that, as long as you’re getting by and being taken care of❤️.
Eileen Fezza thank you, I really appreciate it 😊 My grandparents are really really lovely people and I’m really grateful to be with them. The loss of my mom will haunt me forever, but one day at a time, I guess. My dad isn’t around since he lost custody of me, which I’m quite glad of to be honest, I never really knew him properly. I’m doing as well as I can ❤️
Man, to me The Lumineers is a synonym of quality, nostalgia and happiness. Can't be more exited about this new material.
You my friend have literally nailed it with that one.
Yes.

.... happiness....? We listening to the same songs?

No one said enough is enough
Heaven help me now, heaven show the way
Get me back on my own two feet
I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me
Every night away, every day alone
Get me back on my own two feet
I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Gloria
Will you just decide?
Gloria
There's easier ways to die
Gloria
Have you had enough?
Lost both parents to addiction 20 years ago, 6 months apart and every day is a struggle to do better. God bless you all.
This song helps me see the lie that I believed for years.. that it was my fault. The many nights I prayed and I still do. We are only in control of our own actions and God loves us enough to have mercy.
the same beautiful energy in this new song,, i’m thankful to called The Lumineers my fav band THANK YOU for THAT
*Their songs always make me feel like I'm watching a movie* 💜
This tore my heart apart. Losing someone like this, it would do a number on you
Song is just as simple as ordinary day of our lives. Glory to The Lumineers for sharing a sheer sound among us - it is much better to be grateful for every moment with that kind of songs.
Love the 70s pictures on the vid.
ColdAsHe11 feel u on this
ColdAsHe11 this is just a guess, but for some reason I feel like it could be about Any Winehouse.
Great wonders. I like what you just said. This song is perfect.
I’m with you. I’m getting a sense of addiction and attempting suicide, a mother or aunt.
Are u drunk?
if anyone ws wondering whats the chord and lyric it is:
B E B
Gloria, I smell it on your breath
B E B
Gloria, booze and peppermint
G#m F# E B
Gloria, no one said enough is enough
//Just repeat it
Gloria, they found you on the floor
Gloria, my hand was tied to yours
And, Gloria, did you finally see that enough is enough?
Did you know me when I was younger then?
I could take the whole world with me
I would find myself feelin' alone
Heaven, help me now, Heaven, show the way
Get me back on my own two feet
I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh
Gloria, you crawled up on your cross
Gloria, you made us sit and watch
Gloria, no one said enough is enough
Heaven, help me now (hey, hey), Heaven, show the way (Heaven, show)
Get me back on my own two feet
I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me
Every night away (every night), every day alone (every day)
Get me back on my own two feet
I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh
Gloria, will you just decide?
Gloria, there's easier ways to die
Gloria, have you had enough?
I think we all have a Gloria or maybe we are Gloria. I hope the best for you. Hang in there, i am 15 years clean, it hard evey day. Peace to you Josh. And to everyone who lost someone to this disease, addiction is a unkind bitch but it can be beat.
Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom the glory and the power for ever and ever Amen
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 15:5 KJV
Cleopatra, Angela, gloria well done lumineers. The collections makes me so happy that i could literally feel the song
"I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me." Because Gloria is the mom in this story, and she's an alcoholic. And her child is up at night, hoping their mom isn't up (drinking) because of them. Heart-breaking.
Nice to see someone still care's about Gloria Borger
Whos is she/he? What happened?
A news reporter, was at least @@adeodry7566
OMG 😂😊😊😊😊
@@RexFaceLess The media has become a sham with Mary Ham taking over. Gloria Borger was so good
😂😂😂😂😂
I genuinely fight back tears hearing this song... This is music.
Im in love with part. 0:51 Gloria, did you finally see that enough is enough.
best song ever
this song reminds me of my dad, my entire childhood/life he was a manulipitive, alcoholic, deadbeat dad. he would constantly verbally abuse my mom and i’d always have to comfort her while she was crying and screaming about how horrible he was when i was only 6 years old. i had to comfort her all the way until i was 14 and he eventually died from liver cancer when i was 15. eventually my mom admitted she was always too scared to leave him and i learned that he was also physically abusive
You were a parentified child. It's not a child's duty to comfort a parent. It's should be the other way around. Hope you are doing fine now!
Same feelings..
their songs make me wanna cry. why is that???
You never disappoint me. This song is amazing! Thank you.
Every song he makes has good meaning to it... I love their music
So sorry
I'm so sorry about that... but again I guess we have our own reasons to stay high always...
wishing you the best
You will meet again one day!
I play this song 100 times,,, thanks
I cant help but to think of my mum as I listen to this song. My mom was a great lady, talented ,charismatic, pretty, list goes on. EXCEPT she's a terrible alcoholic. Funny thing is my Grandma, her mom who's also an alcoholic, her name was Gloria. The story's I could tell about my mum and Grandma. It's a rough road
Sorry love, I think after the first line in this song the children of alcoholics knew exactly what this song is about.. you are not alone.
My name is Gloria.
@gloriasol8197
Do you like this song? Just heard it for the first time. Not a fan. The other Gloria song I hate is the one by Laura Branigan. But I do like the one by U2,Van Morrison and The Midnight. So it's not all bad.
@@gloriastroedecke2717 Oddly enough, I do like this song. I also like the other ones as well. They're catchy
@gloriasol8197
I just listened to 3 other ' Gloria' songs I had been unaware of. They are " Going Home to Gloria" by Roy Orbison," Spearhead's " Gloria" and GreenDay" Viva la Gloria". The song that influenced my Mother's name choice though was by The Cadillacs. I hope you find plenty of good songs with or without Gloria in them.
watching this on 2019.
oh wait.. this is from 2019! such good musics that remind me other decades
SAME. Thought this was something i heard in my childhood
I agree
imagine being the main character in each of their song
You guys always coloring my worst days, thanks for being the way you are, GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND THANK YOU SO MUCH🌺💖
Keep listening to the Lumineers dear!! Things get better with good music!
The old and gold sound of Lumineers. Just so exited to listen to something, that's so familiar and new at the same time.
I'm a simple man I saw Lumineers, I immediately clicked on it ❤️
Saludos desde Perú son únicos cada música me transporta al más haya del universo ❤🇵🇪🇵🇪🇵🇪🇵🇪
I love The Lumineers sooo much, all the songs are a masterpiece. ❤️
Favorite band man lol
I lived life watching my parents destroy each other worst I fight same demons no where as bad but life is hard to ignore our past
Amber Louise you don’t have ANY REASON to feel guilty.
😭😭
Amber Louise I’m sorry for your loss and that your dad isn’t around at the moment💗. Also, you shouldn’t feel guilty about feeling like that, as long as you’re getting by and being taken care of❤️.
I know you wrote that a couple months ago but I’m just seeing your comment so I hope you’re doing well🙂
Eileen Fezza thank you, I really appreciate it 😊
My grandparents are really really lovely people and I’m really grateful to be with them. The loss of my mom will haunt me forever, but one day at a time, I guess.
My dad isn’t around since he lost custody of me, which I’m quite glad of to be honest, I never really knew him properly. I’m doing as well as I can ❤️
This song goes out to everyone who's lives are affected by a Gloria💕
To me Gloria is a person struggling with alcoholism, and Gloria is also the alcohol itself to that person.
This makes me miss summer camp
❤️🔥 I’m sure enough is enough😂😂 no words needed 2:48
Glad to have new music to take long road trips to!!
Totally awesome. This song and video was so much worth the wait. Love you Lumineers! Your awesome! God bless you all.
Was looking for the St. Louis Blues song and discovered this masterpiece in the process
It is truly amazing how The Lumineers manage to create a new story in every song. I'm very excited for this new album
Ok. I'm crying again.😭 This band is really something that pulls your tears down and then leaves you without wiping it.
