    VERY IMPORTANT, read this before you watch!
    I get the "limp wrist" comment nearly daily in one video or another with this pistol, but from people who haven't a clue what they are talking about, so I urge you not to jump to conclusions. Most of the issue with malfunctions is the feed ramp, the Lone Wolf AlphaWolf CONVERSION barrel I use has a very thin feed ramp, not wide and loose chamber like a stock Glock feed ramp/chamber. Also, in this video I was not using a 10mm extractor in the conversion, so that didn't help. If you still do not believe me, I did a study of all of the hollow point ammo tests I did with this Glock 41 pistol in both the stock and the conversion setup. Why this is important is because I tested SEVERAL .45 ACP+P rounds that were well over the typical energy level of 10mm, as well as at or above typical 10mm bullet weight, and I never once had a jam in those rounds. Here is the study of just the Glock 41 portion:
    Glock 41 (.45 ACP)
    Shots Fired: 93
    Malfunctions: 1
    Malfunction Rate: 1.1%
    Glock 41 (10mm Conversion)
    Shots Fired: 102
    Malfunctions: 23
    Malfunction Rate: 22.5%

    .357mag, the manstopper. 10mm auto, the newer manstopper.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yess. But the .357 is probably more reliable, however the big size of most 10mm's make them nearly as reliable too.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@GunSam Indeed. Personally, I'd still run the 45acp in semi-autos for self defense. Yet, the 357mag is probably one of the most broadly capable, trustworthy, and all round flexible cartridges on the planet.

      Yeah i'm hoping to pull more of the younger viewers in. I am getting a heaver recoil and guide rod spring so I can push the 10mm a little more, I just need to do some research on how hot I should go in a Glock 41 conversion. Underwood ammo is cheap too, and Underwood also seems to be the biggest maker of 10mm ammo currently.

    Great video Sam! What impressed me was the superb accuracy and low recoil on both of those rounds. Both looked really manageable in a full size handgun. Looks like speed does give better accuracy. This is really helpful as now we have an excellent demonstration of these rounds in fairly standard full size handguns that could reasonably be carried for self defense.
    Glad to see the 10mm demos Sam, its a round I think coming into its own as people realize the limitations of the older (1901/1902) 9mm or 45 ACP (1906 I think) rounds. Inconsistent penetration in real life usage for the one, particularly when hitting bone, and poor barrier penetration and a rainbow like arc for the latter. Plus with the round size you get generally one less round per comparable handgun. Standard, no extension magazine for the Glock 30sf is I believe 9 rounds, vs. 10 for the Glock 29sf. People often don't realize how old in design 9mm/45 ACP really are, compared to more modern rounds like .357, 10mm, .40S&W, and .357 SIG. And I think the marketplace for a variety of reasons has selected the .357 and 10mm as the winners, mostly because they are so versatile in loadings. Either the 686 or the Glock 41 could be used for self defense carry or hand gun hunting where legal.
    Thank you so much I've been looking forward to this test ever since you announced you were getting a conversion barrel. This is consistently the best ballistic testing channel around ... love the use of ordinary items to simulate pectoral muscle, and fiber board for sternum. Pure gelatin tests can tell you something but not everything. Again thanks.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I do like .45 ACP, 9mm is okay too. .40/10mm is an interesting concept but it seems to provide a bit of everything good, big enough diameter to get a lot of mass for good soft tissue penetration but also fast enough to go through hard barriers.

    Great test. The DPX bullets have a good reputation, but they seem to need a little velocity to be effective, which is no problem here. I doubt the 125 gr would do as well in a 38 +p. In fact, i think the DPX load i. 38 +p is 110 gr for that reason, plus the bullet length issue with copper bullets. The 10mm load looks ideal. 16" of penetration with great expansion is just right (my gut tells me more than 16" is pushing it). I will have to remember this load when i get a 10mm. Cor-Bon is smart to load them to sufficient velocity, without going for every last fps. Your recoil experience bears this out. Hornady did that with the 357 Critical Defense as well- i think it is rated at 1300 or 1325 fps.

      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. I actually have that 200 gr Gold Dot and i'm setup for that test, the issue with getting a great comparison with .357 Mag is an interesting one. The only bullet that uses what is essentially the "short barrel" Gold Dot bullet in revolver cartridges is the .38 Special and .357 Mag "short barrel" loads, all other .357 ammo from them is the deep curl hollow point, but nonetheless I will be testing that 10mm round. I quit getting corbon, had 2 boxes of 9mm +p defensive rounds and over half of them were duds in a pistol that fired other ammo with 100% reliability that day and other days. Never had anything remotely like that happen before, especially since it was 50/50 duds out of 2 different boxes, that scared me off corbon big time. Just my experience. So weird because personally out of tens of thousands of rounds I’ve fired, I’ve had MAYBE 2 or 3 duds with other center fire ammunition. I don’t remember ever having a dud, but I accept that I’ve fired so many rounds that it must have happened with other brands too, although I know it’s super rare with centerfire ammunition. The corbon thing was just beyond unconscionable though- I wish I had had the time then to call corbon about it and give them the lot numbers for the sake of other customers! But I’m sure someone else called it in if they had the same problems. Ordered the ammo from luckygunner site. This was about 4 years ago, before the pandemic so idk what was going on.

    Mr Sam could you possibly discuss the viability of grasping the cylinder of a revolver as a defense against being shot by one. It seems to me that unless the hammer is already cocked pulling the trigger would be difficult to impossible.

    • @rhinovirus2225

      And if I'm right then it leaves DA only revolvers at a pretty bad disadvantage.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The chances of stopping a cylinder rotation are next to impossible, but if one were to argue that an already cocked revolver is better than double action only, one might argue that a thumb between the hammer and frame would also stop it from firing. But all if this is mostly hypothetical as neither situation is likely to happen.

    I have always wondered how 10mm and .357 compare, now I'm really interested in is how is the recoil felt between the two. I can shoot my model 29 44 magnum and it isn't too bad. I'll admit after 6-7 cylinders I begin to feel it a bit. From the lighter 357s ive read from people saying it's sharp and not managble and even with the glock 29 many people say its too much with actual hot 10mm. Ive been looking at a g29 for hiking but im curious on how it would be to shoot. From the video a full sized glock doesnt look too bad at soaking up the kick.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to have a G36 .45 ACP, so same grip length as a G29 but actually thinner than a G29, and with .45 ACP+P I don't remember much recoil at all. So a low end 10mm won't be bad, getting into higher energy it might be a little bad but probably less than a .357 snub.

    I believe the 357magnum should be compared with the 357 SIG. But it is so powerful that most compare it to the 10mm. A full power 10mm is a bit more powerful than the 357mag and really should be compared to the 41 magnum to be (fair). If I remember correctly a Buffalo Bore 10mm +P 220 grain heavy hard cast is significantly more powerful than the Buffalo Bore 357magnum 180 grain hard cast heavy. Buffalo Bore is loaded to max hand loaded levels. But I liked this review great choice. 👏

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did a little bit of research on ammo comparison, and I guess the 10mm used to be called the .357 Magnum of the auto world for a long time, and this was before .357 Sig was invented. The .357 Sig looks promising, but the standard load is 125 gr at 1,350 FPS/506 ft lbs, as where the LE standard for .357 Mag was 1,450 FPS/583 ft lbs. The 10mm is one of those things, difficult to get real information on as the loads are so under-standardized and all over the place, but the middle ground seems to be about 600 ft lbs energy. The hottest .357 Mag loads I tested in my 4" barrel were between 700 and 750 ft lbs with various bullet weights. I plan to only test defensive ammo and if I averaged it i'd have to say maybe 550 ft lbs with today's .357's and 600 ft lbs with today's 10mm.

I am looking at this from the hunters fram of mind not self defense this time. My thoughts are my (686) 357 magnum and (Redhawk) 44 magnum revolvers are hunting tools my Taurus 605 and Ruger LC9s Pro are self defense tools. I really enjoy your reviews I always learn from them.

      @@davidsomerset8411 Thank you. I actually just tested the Underwood Xtreme hunter in .357 Mag, rated at 1,700 FPS 802 ft lbs, Underwood is known for using a 6" test revolver. But I only tested it in my 2" Taurus 605 and was getting something like 1,425 FPS and 520 ft lbs or something along those lines, so that one had some power for .357 Mag.

  • @glenshort6567
    @glenshort6567 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not a fair comparison. Revolver has cylinder gap so you have to use equal barrel lengths. The cylinder gap evens out barrel travel

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have to disagree because cylinder gap is unavoidable, and averages 5% velocity loss. If over an inch was added to the revolver there would be way more advantage to the revolver, and going shorter makes the issue worse. At most 65 FPS was lost with this ammo.

      When you really want to hit them hard nothing beats a Magnum revolver. It almost always insures a one shot stop if you hit them where it hurts. All them 9mm boys just keep saying...shot placement...shot placement... because it takes alot of 9mm to do any damage. Dick Fairburn collected 5 years of police shootings back in 90'. He found they needed 5-6 9mm shots and 2-3 .45acp shots to put the thug down.

      Yeah, relatively light but at the same time easier to control and still good performance. I tested the Winchester Defender today and while the .357 was still light, the 10mm Defender was getting up there over 600 ft lbs energy, felt like my slide was coming back a little too hard, need to find a dual captive gen 4 high power spring, but I cannot find one.

    Great video!!! I don’t know here... seems like the .357 did better than the 10... better penetration and great expansion. The 10 is bigger however it only made 3 jugs while the .357 made 4. The 10 recoil is the deciding factor...

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Low end 10mm recoil isn't too bad, hotter 10mm is still pretty low for recoil in the same energy as .357 Mag, but I think .357 Mag can reliably go hotter and still stay accurate.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. The thing with the .357 Sig is that while it's 125 gr load does match the average .357 Mag 4" barrel police load, ie will push that 125 gr at 1,450 FPS, the versatility of a gun in .357 Sig is limited. Now, if I ever get a .40 cal Glock or something and get a .357 Sig barrel, i'd consider that, unless I could get one for my G41, which isn't available at all.

    • @luket557
      @luket557 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GunSam Yeah 1450fps sounds about right. Some companies even load it at lower velocities. But then you got brands like Underwood, Atomic ammunition, and fenix ammunition. There may be others out there. That will load over 1500-1550 fps. But 357 mag is definitely more versatile.
