@@RobErnstCarGuy I bought the wood and tried. I have that the attention span of a gnat. Way to much time cutting on the band saw for me. I think I'm more of the fence picket project person.
this look great, well l know a christmas gift l needed this one. Also you can make some, contact realtors and sell them on the idea of givin these as a house warming gift
So yeah I was watching this build, which is pretty nice by the way, but there was one safety tip I thought about mentioning on cutting those dowels. Before you cut the dowels on the miter saw like that, count your fingers, when finished, count again, number should match. Seriously dude, you pointed out that you have a band saw, cutting the dowels on the band saw would look a wee bit more comfortable than that miter saw that desires to through tiny pieces across your shop.
I think the weakness of the thin bit is due to the grain orientation, with a larger piece like that it shouldn't really be an issue unless there is already a split in the wood or someone intentionally tries to break it there
What about trying to make these with the grain orientation rotated 90 deg? That way the horizontal sections have long grain to support shear and bending force from weight and the sides with short grain are mostly under compression force.
I just downloaded the plains, I’m going to make this for my son and his wife. They are wine 🍷 lovers. I don’t think I will use the dowels, I’m thinking of cutting matching curves in place of the dowels and glueing all them together. I’m also thinking I might add some Laser art, and maybe wording. Thank you so much for the video and plans. Have a wonderful thanksgiving 🦃
Heck yeah! Its supposed to be fun :) my wife gets pretty furious when she is baking (her hobby) Ive shot nails in my finger and not been mad about it lolol
I'm getting ready to make these but after seeing the dows split the wood in your video, I'm going try and glue wood scraps between the pieces in between the pieces. I'll let you know how that works out. Probably the 1/4" dows you suggested in your text on the video might help too.
The second one had 1/4" dowels, but with the weight of the wine you cannot pick it up with bottles inside, lemme know how the scrap pieces works out :)
The blade I use is technically for laminate, and it works like a dream! Keep the blade in the guides and maneuver the back around to turn rather than twisting the front (and blade) :)
Either glue the plan down on the wood or... if you want to use the template again, use a pencil, darken the backside on the lines, tape down to the wood and then trace the template with a pencil. Basically transferring the template onto the wood. Have my students do this all the time.
I'm trying to convert to laser SVG to burn a pattern onto wood to avoid messing with paper and glue. Just gotta figure out how to keep dimensions correct. Thanks "VOSS"!
I wouldn't worry about dowels, plenty of offcuts, create rounded blocks and glue on chunkier areas of blocks. Or Wouldn't hurt to reinforce the thin segments with 2x 3mm strips inlaid cross grain
@@cabman86haha I have that same issue. My wife sends me a picture and says “can you build me this?”. Of course I stump her when I ask “what size do you want?”. To which she replies”just whatever you think”😳
I used thinner dowels on the one I clear coated at the end, worked a lot better. I might adjust the plans so there is a little more space inbetween the bottles as well :)
Do you sell one of these for $100, because that seems high, especially when there made with soft wood. Also, if these are for wine bottles then the bottle should tilt towards the neck to keep the cork moist.
Awesome Video as usual! I’m a big proponent of templates. Seems as if all three are the same design. One template made would make life easier. Not only that, you could flip your template to mark the holes on the other side. Storage of the template would be easy.

Why not put your holes for your dowels in a thicker area to prevent cracking? Only need to be 1/2" long to align with.

Once stuff goes out to the shop, you can always say "I don't know what happened to it". 😂
"looks like you threw it on the ground", thats what Ill tell the customer ;) they are much stronger and more sturdy with the 1/4" dowels
