The cost of living in Chiang Mai, Thailand 2023. Retire in Thailand affordably - live in Chiang Mai!

  • Here is the real cost of living in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2023 and 2024. Are you planning to live in Chiang Mai? Are you wondering how to retire in Thailand? The cost to retire in Thailand? Here are the real figures about what it costs to live in Chiang Mai. If you are considering retiring in Thailand, you should consider Chiang Mai.
    We don't just talk about prices. We literally show you. We take you on tours of apartments in the low, medium and high price range. We visit restaurants and see actual meals and what they cost. We discuss motorcycle and transportation costs. Our goal is to not only provide you with helpful information, but make it entertaining as well.
    Chiang Mai is much less expensive than Bangkok, Phuket, and the islands, but is a beautiful city, close to nature with plentiful hikes and waterfalls. And few cities are as famous as Chiang Mai for its multitude of great coffee shops and restaurants. It is a foodie paradise, but at a low cost.
    Just FYI, one bad thing about Chiang Mai to be aware of is the "smokey season," or some call it the burning season. This is when farmers burn their crops to regenerate the soil (or to promote mushroom growth) all around the north: Laos, Myanmar, northern Thailand. It turns beautiful Chiang Mai into an unpleasant place (not so bad some years but terrible in 2003), usually. February to April. So you need to factor in that you might want to use these months to travel, either around Thailand (cheap flights and cheap places to stay, but you are maybe paying rent in Chiang Mai while you are gone, so a double expense while away), or to be your annual trip out of Asia or to your home country. Every city seems to have a "bad" aspect - crime, unrest, smog, high costs, et cetera - so we just figure the smokey season is the one bad thing about Chiang Mai, and we work around it in our lives. BTW, 2023 was a bad smokey year, but the years prior were not as bad. We home one day the generational practice of burning crops will lessen.
    Part 2 will review health insurance, visas, and give a wrap-up of budget issues.

    Thanks for the video and look forward to part II. We have family and a home in Nan. Like you I want to split time between California and Thailand once I retire. Randy, your videos are brilliant. I am ardently starting at the beginning and working my way through them. Your delivery and happy demeanour make watching, not just compelling, but thoroughly enjoyable. While the first budget hotel room works fine especially the patios and location and honestly the price is like what I paid in the USA for shared apartment 40 plus years ago at university there would come a time when one might want a proper bathroom or a desk to write etc. The Riverside condo's are great the $460 one is great but who wants that much space...lol Funny the views from Riverside are better than the Astra. One could start out in the budget studio for 3 months and then just shop around make a list of the necessary accoutrements e.g. luxury studio, wash machine, pool, gym etc...or whatever its all personal as you said. Fabulous job. As for Pad Thai or Pad Woon Sen I could live on that alone - a crusade to find the best beckons me thinks. Joy adds great value and like yourself is very personable. This video was extremely helpful so elucidating, especially the food I could easily live on 300 baht a day - coffee 60 baht, shake 60 baht and 3 meals 60 baht...that would be a bargain for what you get, add in a a studio room life couldn't be simpler. You then have loads of dispensable income for gyms, travel to Vietnam et al. and a good solid base to come back to - can;'t wait for the other videos - well done that man - strike that, couple!

Yes, I'm not one of those drawn to the newest buildings with the smaller apartments, and I agree, the best Thai dishes are often the cheapest, and I like the simple open restaurants quite often. And your recommendation on how to start and move on after a couple months would be the right way to do it for sure.

      Good comment,Steven. Generally speaking the older condos give you better bang for your buck . If you want to rent a car ,I know a couple of good places where you can rent one for about 15000 baht a month or about 5000 a week or about 690 a day.
      Including insurance and road service .
      Personally I prefer cars to motorbikes, safer and cooler.

      Nicely done. I'd say your format in each area of style and presentation is superior to ALL the other such monthly budget videos on any country videos I have seen so far, perhaps 30 or 40.
      Close ups of you two are personal and sincere. Good.
      Quick previews of each restaurant with a few dishes and price is substance with interest. Peaks ones interest.
      No boring spreadsheets.
      Fast paced with wrap-up summary for each segment.
      Very professionally done, yet personal.
      You must have had some previous experience doing this sort of thing in your professional lives.
      If not, you two are genius with creative abilities.
      Kudos.

      Also, just noticed:
      "Chapters" w/thumbnail pix;
      subject outline w/video subject location.
      URL to Picaridin bug stuff
      (I'd have to buy the gallon size cuz I HATE gnats an' "no-See-Ums");
      Phone # of hotel, other useful info.
      Comments of smoky air Feb-Apr, w/advice to travel then.
      Full of good info.
      A+++

    Thanks for the videos Joy & Randy. I''ve watched many, many videos too on my retirement planning to Chiang Mai. Indeed the promise of a more actionable content well delivered, especially the promise to even do so! I believe its accelerated my exploration by months: how to live, play & eat! I will arrive in late November for 2 weeks for the first exploration. Not sure where to stay in that few weeks, any tips further appreciated. Thanks

    • @RetiredGlobalLife
      @RetiredGlobalLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You are coming in the best month! Really, the best weather usually. About hotels, it depends on the price range, of course, and the part of town you like. I can recommend the Away Chiang Mai Tha Pae Resort. It is a block from the Tha Pae gate on a quiet soi, breakfast in included (although it's vegan but still quite good if you can get over no eggs). A nice quiet pool, great staff and very nice rooms with big terraces. I think the daily rate is about $80, so on the high side for CM, but if you stay for more than 30 days with Trip.com it will be reduced 50% normally. I hope this helps.

      @@RetiredGlobalLife Thanks! Looks great. Indeed its a bit pricey, but very tempted. Just looking for somewhere decent to base & explore longer term properties, meet agents & visit the sports/social life you mentioned would be great. Scanning FazWaz I see a lot of concrete jungle properties, so might have to venture further out? Thanks again.

    I am so glad to find your channel on Chiang Mai . I have been to Chiangmai for several times and would like to know more about Pattaya City see if I can retire here later. Thanks for your information !

      Pattaya is way different than Chiang Mai. CM is pretty wholesome and Pattaya is known as the place to get a girl for $. I'm sure there are other advantages too though.

    Randy & Joy - I echo comments saying how much I enjoyed your informative video and style which is refreshing (I've seen a lot) one question - in your equipment list I didnt see what type/brand of Gimbel you use? Thanks again...

      No gimbel. I am a pretty basic guy. The only clever thing I did was buy a gizmo to put between my selfie stick and the camera as I wanted my mic to be below the camera, not above it or next to as is common. To me, my mouth is lower than my eyes, so why have the mic above me. So that puts the mic inches closer to my mouth and with non-lavs every inch helps. Thanks for the question!
