    Randy, you are the best Chiang Mai reporter and promoter. Moreover, you are one the greatest reasons that my family and I are visiting Chiang Mai in January, 2025. ❤❤❤ Who knows, maybe we move there. 😊😊😊

      What a nice comment! Thank you. Glad you are visiting but remember the burning season can start in January. It is different every year and February is usually the first really bad month, but if there is any way to come in December I'd recommend it. Feb/March/April are usually the worst months but it can change year to year.

    People put most of their thinking into how much will it cost, where will I live ect ect when they research retiring in Chiang Mai. For me, although costs ect are important, the most important thing is what will I do every day once the novelty of living here has worn off. For many they retire and move here having not yet experienced retirement. That is day in day out getting up in the morning thinking what will I do today. Many end up in farang bars drinking, playing pool and talking to others retired with nothing to do. Its the single biggest problem back in our own countries for retirees but to add to the problem here in Thailand you can't get a part time jobs or do volunteer work, you aren't allowed to do any paid or unpaid work. I'm not saying don't come here, I'm saying retiring in your own country in some respects isn't any different from retiring here. If you retire here on a shoestring budget then you have little disposable income to spend on enjoying life. What will you do? You need to plan this beyond finances, you need interests, you need friends who are enjoying life here and you need a positive attitude to life. Plan your day. I have farang friends here that say they don't have enough time in the day to do everything. Your success is like anywhere, is the cup half full or half empty?

      "ect" . . is that the same as "etc" (?)
      which is the abbreviation for the Latin phrase "et cetera" meaning "and so on"
      and I liked the low rates for studios + a separate gym membership of $43. Thanks.

      Also, would it be economical to rent a studio in Chaing Mai for most of the year and then live in the south like Hua Hin or Koi Samui during the "smoky" burning season for about 3 months?

      @@curtbass8210 Obtaining a drivers license in Thailand, for a motorcycle anyway, involves a physical riding test, watching a film and a 50 question test, which is actually quite hard and few westerners pass on the first try or even the second, from what I hear. You can rent a MC or even a car from what I see without a Thai license, however, but getting Thai insurance coverage could requitre a Thai license. The fines for driving without a licnese her are small, usually about 300-1000 baht, no real punishment it seems.

      Hey, what a nice comment! Thanks. Chiang Mai is great except for the burning season (mainly Feb, March, April) when most of us elect to leave for the islands or elsewhere. To me it is the only con of Chiang Mai. Hopefully one day it will change.

    Another great video! Your love and enthusiasm for Thailand and Chiang Mai really shows through. One quick question: How easy is it to get around Chiang Mai without owning or renting a car? Being a bicycle rider and walker by nature, I use cars as little as possible and living in Europe as I do, I really appreciate good public transportation for longer journeys.
    Thanks for the information; please keep them coming!

    • @RetiredGlobalLife
      @RetiredGlobalLife  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Great question. It is hard and easy. It is easy as the old city is small, and the area outside the old city has all you ever need in daily life, so between the two you can walk everywhere. But the con is that they don't always have sidewalks, so you often walk in the street with drivers having little passion for walkers. Or there are sidewalks, but they have uneven pavers, holes and whatnot, so your eyes must always be on the alert.

    I visited Chiang Mai about 10 years ago. Only for a week, not really long enough to decide if it was the right place for me long-term although it is certainly one of my top 3 spots to retire to, and one thing touched on by the Aussie couple in this video is the laid back feeling in Chiang Mai. I was shown around by someone from the expats club, and she made the same point. I found it too, especially when I visited a few temples - the most incredibly serene places. If I were to go to Chiang Mai again I would definitely be sitting in temples for hours and hours.

    Very good vlog. I have spent on and off up to 12 months in Chiang Mai and like it a lot accept for burning season. Have considered retiring there. One issue that holds me back is the cost of health insurance which I do consider essential. At age 68 it is not cheap if you want a decent level of cover and I believe very few insurers cover you once you are over 65. I agree it is very important to have social contact, make friends and stay active especially as a single person with no family. This will become more important as you age and health declines.

    • @RetiredGlobalLife
      @RetiredGlobalLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a good comment, thanks. I tend to worry less (maybe unwisely, haha) as the costs of health care are so cheap here, that "disaster" coverage is sufficient in my mind. The average cost of doctor visits is about $10-15, so I don't seek insurance for that, just in-patient big stuff. But I bet you are already aware of that. Thanks again for the nice comment and hope to hear from you again.

    Hi Randy. Charlie from Boston again here. I subscribed yesterday and I came across this video today. Love your delivery ,very articulate and easy to understand. It’s good to hear a little English from Mexico once in a while lol very informative. I got another half of this video to check out, but Chiang Mai looks like as good a place as any for me to start my Asian adventure. I appreciate you brother. Big help. I will do some more research. Geography airports places to stay and such. when the time comes I will reach out and let you know if you might tell me I made a good choice in hotels or maybe when i decide you can let me know a couple places. I like the gym five days a week. If I went to the hotel gym the first one in this video, it would be the nicest gym in my life. Let’s face it. …Our years are less now I want to enjoy them I deserve it. I’ll get back to your video. I look forward to it of course.

    Hi Randy, So glad you have love and a wonderful new adventure in this chapter of your life. Being in my 70's now, my question is about health care while one is staying in Chiang Mai. What is the quality and accessibility of medical services, should one need them?

    • @RetiredGlobalLife
      @RetiredGlobalLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to hear from you. I can honestly say the health care in Chiang Mai is excellent. I've been to the hospital once for severe stomach pains. I went at 9:00 pm but was still seen within an hour (at Ram Hospital - a private hospital, not public which are not as good) by an English-speaking doctor, got an exam and prescription and the total cost for all was $36. They told me to come back to see another doctor the next day. He ordered an x-ray, and his visit and the x-ray was about $50. Amazing and fast and cheap.
      I know many people who come to Chiang Mai just for serious medical procedures for the lower cost and high quality care.

    • @RetiredGlobalLife
      @RetiredGlobalLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      The smokey season is when the farmers in Laos and Myanmar and northern Thailand burn their crops to repropagate the soil. Usually it is Feb and March at its worst but can start earlier and run later. This year was terrible, prior recent years not pleasant but not as bad. Those who can leave often so so and explore an island or coastal city, or another country nearby, or go back to their home country. Or those that stay, and many do, just live with it and spend more time inside with air purifiers. Despite this season, Chiang Mai has so many attractions that it stays popular.

We have some things in common: I’m a retired attorney, 65, pickleball player, living in California, and with a strong interest in retirement to Southeast Asia, with Thailand and the Philippines being high on the list. Can you refer to some resources, TH-cam or otherwise, on other day to day aspects of living in Thailand, like banking, access to US funds, cell phones, visa requirements, etc. Thank you much and looking forward to catching up on your content and the content to come.

      Thanks so much. I bet you can find quality YT videos on all those subjects. I can tell you the best $ transfer is Wise, which I think used to be transferwise. Re banking, it can be tough as all banks want different things or just say no to foreigners. If you come to Chiang Mai, that is one of the services of my daughter's company, HHPremium Visa Consulting. She also has great vids on visa on her channel. Re cell phones, you can get a great fast internet SIM card with calls, texts, etc for about $10 a month at AIS or True Dtac. Maybe see you on the CM pickleball courts one day, but I make it there only rarely, compared to my US time where I try to play 3-4 times a week. See you here again!

      Many of the big hotels and resorts do but I'd guess at about 25% of them. You just need to call and ask. The problem is getting to the right person as the original person answering may have no clue about the subject. For the Duangtawan, I just walked up to the pool and asked. They had a desk set up right outside the lobby. BTW, I would not stay at the hotel as rooms quite old, but I like the gym and pool.

The sidewalks are not kept in the best condition and are often actually bad, and many areas don't have sidewalks at all so you are walking in the street. This is true of many Thailand cities. Hopefully others will see this question and reply their thoughts and suggestions. 👋 Hi I really enjoy watching your very informal videos. I also watched the how much it cost to live in Chiang Mai which is very helpful to know. I am 36 years old (not looking for retirement yet) but I am half Thai. My mom lives in the Nong Khai area. I would like to move to my mom but I would like to move north. (i'm currently located in Chicago). My question is, in your opinion: what business would be best to start in Chiang Mai. I would like to live higher up in the mountains where temperature is cooler. Maybe we can buy land and build a small hotel, or buy a property with a building to fix up to a hotel ect. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I heard buying land/property is pretty expensive. I wonder how much would I have to safe up? It's probably cheaper outside of chaing mai but then tourists will be less 🤔 Do you have any good ideas on how to work and make a living in Chiang Mai?

    • @RetiredGlobalLife
      @RetiredGlobalLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you are half Thai and your mom is Thai and lives there you likely know better than me. And as a Thai you could at least own land which non-Thais can't without a Thai partner, so easier to start your business. Most people make the most money though have western jobs they can do remotely, so the higher western wage, but are located in. Thailand. Good luck and hope to see you here again. As far as your own business in Thailand, just being there you tend to see opportunities appear in front of you and some might be worth jumping on.

And if you love to hike, tons of great ones. You can be those guys I envy who RUN past me on the trails, as I walk. Don't spend 12 months straight in CM though, due to the smokey season. You might want to go stay on one of the islands or coastal cities in about February/March. Low costs make it doable and a good excuse to see different parts of Thailand, or elsewhere that time each year.

  • @villagefarang
    @villagefarang ปีที่แล้ว

    I always say get a life and meet people doing things you like doing. The tricky part comes when you try to get specific as everyone is different. You are so new yourself and not really living here so it is a little puzzling as to why you want to encourage others to move to Thailand. Maybe you are trying to drum up business for your daughter but I am not convinced that is going to work. Hopefully making YT videos will be fun for you and encourage you to get out and explore.
    I think it is important to remember that people's wants and needs evolve over time and what you want or need today may be vastly different much sooner than you think. Still, with the right temperament Thailand can be a great place to live.

      Thank you so much for the comment. You have been.here decades so I will never have the local knowledge you do, but perhaps because I'm "new" (I've been coming each year for 6 years), I have a lot of enthusiasm about Chiang Mai to share. Plus, making videos is a new passion in my semi-retirement, and something I have found my girlfriend and I really enjoy doing together.
      Yes, you are certainly right. Everyone is different. All I can do is offer the things I know about and which are of interest to me. And like every parent, I love the chance to help my children, but my motivation is creating the channel is not to promote my daughter's business. But it would be quite odd to do travel videos about Thailand and not mention her when she does what she does: help people get visas and relocate her. Lucky for me, she does not need my help at all. My channel is little and get small views. My daughter's videos on visa subjects are often at the top of the search results. While my videos views measure in the hundreds, her measure in the tens of thousands. So lucky for me, no help from dad needed!
      Best wishes and thanks for watching!

    Good vlog. But you omitted to say about the very poor weather (Pollution/Smog) you get for around 4 months a year. That alone can knock a few years off your life. Please don't say it only happens a few times every few years cos having also retired in Thailand for well over 25 years I know firsthand that it happens every year. Conclusion C/M isn't as great as some make out.

      Haha, yes, true, and I didn't mention bad sidewalks, toilet paper napkins, and the list of legit complaints I could make. But that's not what this video is for. I have a video ii editing now and I do talk about the burning season. Not trying to hide it, I just can't mention everything. Thanks for the comment!

      @@RetiredGlobalLife The only reason I mentioned it in the first place was this year for around a month it was the Most Polluted City in the WORLD. At least something to boast about in C/M. At least it has succeded in something albeit not quality of living.

      @@fredob43 You're one of those ex-pats you always hear about from other ex-pats that are constantly complaining about their adoptive country! Don't like the government, don't like the food, don't like traffic, don't like Thais not able to speak English...blah, blah, blah, blah. You're only there because you can't afford to retire in your own country. If you don't like the burning season then just go back to where you came from 25 years ago! You'd be much happier there! Don't let the airport gate hit your arse on the way out.

    Are there pickleball courts around there? How strict is the government about visas? Worse case scenario if you get caught living there without a visa? Coming from California where it seems like they encourage coming across from Mexico. I plan to but my own health insurance in Thailand so I'm not a burden in case I should get ill.

    • @RetiredGlobalLife
      @RetiredGlobalLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there are 3 courts central city, and a couple scattered further out. The government is very serious about visas but you can enter from the US automatically on a 30 day visa exemption, but then you need an extension, or a long term solution, some of which require you to have particular levels of insurance. Check out my Costs of Living in Chiang Mai video and we actually go to the pickleball courts. And in a few days will be part 2 of that video, discussing health insurance and visas. Take care.

      @@RetiredGlobalLife Also, I would plan to keep my home in Huntington Beach and rent it out, also draw from my retirement if needed. Are there CPA's in Thailand that can assist me with my annual taxes?

    Hi. Thanks for sharing all your information. I really enjoy your channel as well as your and Joy’s personality.
    My background: I’m 56 and am not looking to retire as I enjoy my job …financial advisor with a background as a CPA…and have started visiting Thailand again after 20 years.
    My prior careers have brought me to many countries around the world and really love Thailand.
    I am looking to work remotely in Thailand …not sure where yet…for 1/2 the time and the other 1/2 the time work back in the states. I am also looking for love in Thailand…girlfriend.
    My question is surrounding visa requirements in bringing your girlfriend (not spouse) Joy back to the States with you for short one month or longer visits.
    Does she ever join you in the States? Are there challenges with her obtaining a visiting visa?
    Do you know if her visa requirements are doable?
    Thank you very much 🙏🏼
    Dave

      Well, Dave, it is a bit of a surprise for your audience but Joy just got her first visa and will be coming to the US with me shortly, and we plan to do a video on her first impressions of American. Thanks for asking. BTW, not easy for Thais to get B1B2 visas. Everyone in front of her in line got turned down in seconds.

      Do you know if it was her “ties” to Thailand that did it for her?…meaning her Thai job, Thai assets, etc?

      I may be mistaken but I think maybe I saw that as a group in the Chiang Mai Expats club. If not, I bet Google or an online expat forum could lead you to one.

    Hi there, thank you for a lovely and informative video. I recently visited Chiang Mai ,Pattaya and Bangkok and have decided to retire in Chiang Mai, or somewhere close. My concern is that i am deaf and have a small service dog companion. Of the condos you've visited are service animals allowed ? I encountered very few instances that were problematic due to my service animal during my three months of travel, we were restricted from traveling on the sleeper train to Bangkok for example. Any thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated.

    • @RetiredGlobalLife
      @RetiredGlobalLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is what I know so far . . . I don't know of service animal laws in Thailand like in the US, but I do know they are very flexible on things. So for example, the combination of your dog being a service dog, and you convincing the apartment owner your dog is trained not to bark and disturb neighbors, etc, would often indicate they'd be flexible on the issue even if normally allowing no dogs. Of course, with a house, you have more control, but I'm assuming like most farangs you will prefer an apartment/condo. I have emailed a realtor I know and I passed on your question to her, so she may reply with more specifics, and if so I'll add them to this post. Best wishes for a happy retirement and relocation to Chiang Mai, or wherever you hope to settle.

      @@TheAlphacad Okay, I got a reply from a realtor I've worked with. Tanitta at ChiangMai Open Realty, says at the large place she focuses on, the Riverside Condos (which you can see in a few days in my upcoming "costs of living in Chiang Mai" video, does not have a no dog policy, but many places do. Her email is condo@chiangmaiopenrealty.com
      I hope this is helpful and good luck.

      @@TheAlphacad It was my pleasure to try to help. You are more than welcome to mention me, Randy Hicks, but I don't have a big connection. I just thought of her as she just showed me several apartments at the Riverside Condo literally ten days ago, and they always seem to have moderately priced units available, and they evidently have a dogs-okay policy. She seemed straight-forward to me and was accommodating in showing me many places, although I did not end up selecting one. She also has units in other buildings but mainly seems to be the in-house real estate agent for rentals and sales for that large condo complex Best wishes!
