    Update since I didn't explain clearly enough in the video. When I say recording limit I mean that eventually the heat from the RX won't let you record anymore. Both do have recording limits on each clip.

      I got from S9+ heat limit record, but only one time. To be clear i had a case on it, maybe that was the problem for the overheating.

    Jesus the color saturation in the video samples from the S9 are ridiculous

  • @hackapell23
    @hackapell23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +71

    I would pick Sony for the color alone, that horrible galaxy saturation is very off putting.
    This test seems too much focused on ease of use which is a win for smartphone of course.
    The fact Sony has so much bigger sensor is an auto win for me. It might be more fair test if you compared it with some classic point and shot.

      I could fix the saturation easy with KineMaster. Not a big deal

    • @TokyoQuaSaR
      @TokyoQuaSaR 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can fix the saturation with the camera settings on the phone even... I do think it's ok. Yes the sensor size is bigger but then why not get an APS-C such as a Sony a6400 which is about the same price or even a D3500 if you're limited by the price. The RX100 is way too expensive for such a small sensor. it's almost the same price as my D7500 plus my Tamron 18-400.

      Eric Carmichael and a garbage 4K? Pixel still has best overall.

    • @ericcarmichael8376
      @ericcarmichael8376 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Based on what? The only difference is the IS in 4K and the P20 Pro has a better front and rear camera than the Pixel, especially in low-light, it's also faster, has a much better battery and more memory. I'm not sure how you can say that the Pixel is better here unless you have buyers remorse. The Pixel shoots better out of the box but the P20 Pro is an actual tool that photographers can use, it's images survive post-processing with no noise.

    The colors on the S9 look off and too oversaturated because you probably have HDR on and you're processing the video on a Mac. It shouldn't look like this, there's a video on youtube that explains this, I'll link it here for you in a reply when I find it.

    You wanted comments so I try my best to deliver. I think the whole video is a joke if you truly think "Everything about the Galaxy S9 is better in my mind than the RX 100 mark 5". Are you blind? The video is way worse in S9 and even more in the dark. The lack of details in S9 compared to RX100V is notable. Autofocus.. I'm betting you used the default autofocus speed with RX 100 V. There is faster option also.. maybe you should try that. And the JPG test. For real? You compare well focused image of RX100V with totally out of focus shot taken with S9.. and you say that "Both are really great.".. wow. "Samsung is a little more saturated"? Are you aware of the RX100V creative styles and profiles? I bet you have no clue. There is the 5 minute limit in RX100V. I'm just wondering why that is a problem. What do you really wan't to shoot for 10-15 minutes? If you are looking for a device for recording long videos neither of these are the right device for you. In that case you should buy a videocamera. I even disagree with your comment about the easy navigation in RX100V. You say that you think that RX100V is quite easy to navigate. I disagree again. Ofcourse you can learn the system but it just isnt well organized. And next you compare point and shoot to a DSLR. Really? What is the point in there? Yes I understand that the Sony A6300 is cheaper but it isn't point and shoot. Try to find another point and shoot with same features that RX100V has and then tell me the price. You know it's a lot harder to put all the features in smaller camera body. And obviously you need the lens for A6300 which you didn't bother to mention ($$$). Would love to see how you put your A6300 with the lens in to your pocket. The next joke is that you try to say that S9 can mimic sensor size with computing power. I bet you have no clue what sensor size even means or how it affects the quality. No camera phone will ever be able to create the same quality with as small camera inside as they have. For the same reason DSLR cameras produce more quality over RX100V. I'm not a salty Sony fan boy. I just can't stand spreading so much false information to other people. I'm just wondering if the quality is so good in S9 why do you use A6300 to record your video footage? I can answer for you.. you use the A6300 because it has bigger sensor and for that reason better quality... see what I did there? So you are telling me you are "regular person" and for that reason you don't want bigger sensor or manual controls though you are filming with A6300 just for those reasons. Amazing. I needed point and shoot camera that is very light and that I can have in my pocket all times. For that reason I have watch so many videos about RX100V that I can't even remember. This video about RX100V is by far the least informative and failed in so many ways it's just surreal for me.

    I use both of my s9+ and Sony a6500 for my videos. I prefer to use a6500 as much as I can because it gives deeper depth to the videos. S9+ is super convenient, lightweight, and simple to use. However, I can't really get the cinematic feeling to it with my s9+. Both of them are great, but the phone can't beat the richness from the camera. So I mainly use a6500 for all my crafting videos and s9+ for the quick vlog.

    The S9 can only record in 4K 30fps for 10min and in 4K 60fps for 5min, so I don't know how you recorded for 15 to 20min unless you hit stop and pressed record again.

  • @tpar83
    @tpar83 6 ปีที่แล้ว +78

    S9 so saturated, wow.... (don't know how people find that beautiful) and I'm assuming it only shoots JPG, no raw, which makes things worse. Depth of Field on the RX100V is also better. The only thing shown here that really amazed me was how fast S9's autofocus really is. Other than that, the RX100V produces way better pictures. Every single footage taken from the S9 in this video seems oversaturated, as if a teenager crazy for filters using Instagram applied one on every single photo. I think i'll wait on the Pixel 3 before switching. I don't know if this was a video to promote the S9, but it had the opposite effect on me, hahaha. But great video, nonetheless.

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I found out after publishing this video the s9 and macs don’t play nice. There’s a weird picture profile thing that adds a serious red tint to everything.
      I’ve got a video comparing the a7iii to the s9 where I was able to correct the files and while still a little saturated it’s way better.

      The galaxy has a pro menu in which you can adjust colors, contrast and stuff so you can get as much dynamic range as possible. Yes its auto mode is not jaw dropping but its manual mode is ridiculously good if one kniws how to use it. But the rx 100v eats any of todays phones IMO

    • @mikldude9376
      @mikldude9376 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tony Pugliese of you don't like the saturated look it is very easy to tone it out down with a swipe and tap, you have a lot of options with these .

    • @tpar83
      @tpar83 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know that the S9 has a great camera and that virtually every photo can be edited in pre (by menus adjustments) or post (by software), but then again, in this video, we are talking about photos taken straight from auto, right?

    • @paraskamdar8621
      @paraskamdar8621 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yeah, but even straight out from auto mode, pictures on s9/s9 plus arent this saturated, i can confirm becoz i am using a s9 plus atm. And like mentioned above, the only reason the photos look so saturated here is becoz it was processed on a mac, and there is some issue when u process samsung photos on a mac becoz of the color profile, hence why this video doesnt exactly show how s9 performs in real life, its actually much better, but yeah, the pictures are a bit saturated, not as much as in the video, but yeaaa

  • @ksmackvolleyball
    @ksmackvolleyball 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    NOTE; Purely for taking photos, I use the Canon SX530 camera.
    It has one huge advantage, it has a 50x optical zoom lens.
    You can be a long way away from your subject, and still get a closeup shot.
    FYI; I bought mine during a Black Friday sale for $250.
    The camera itself is just average, but having that sorta zoom ability is super awesome. That's why I take it with me everywhere I go.

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah optical zoom is big and something I should have mentioned.

    • @ksmackvolleyball
      @ksmackvolleyball 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Companies like Canon are making "super zoom" cameras cause they know that simple "point and shoot" cameras are being overrun by cell phones.
      I can confirm that having a small camera with a 50x zoom is a huge advantage over any cell phone camera.
      I've seen some cameras with 65x zooms.
      By the way, the 50x zoom also works in video mode.

  • @Basicbill
    @Basicbill 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think if you're doing any kind of casual nature shooting you want something with an optical zoom such as the Sony. You need that reach to pull subjects in. Cellphones have digital zoom but there is the image quality lose.
    Other than that I too find myself using my cellphone (currently a Samsung S7) more and more. Even though I have many other cameras to choose from.

  • @helloken
    @helloken 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    S9 very impressive for a phone, wins in a couple things (4k time, auto focus, maybe even speed of exposure correction). But for me, the RX100 HANDILY beat the S9 every single time, and it should. But considering the cost, and just how good a phone like the S9 or Pixel 2 is, I can totally understand the argument to get rid of the RX100 and just use your phone if you don't need the absolute best quality. Also one thing I wish that was compared and important for vloggers is the effectiveness of the built in image stabilization, since not all of us want to spend hundreds more after buying a expensive device to begin with!
    As for the Mark V, it is in my opinion a bit overpriced. You can get the Mark 4 which is almost as good for a couple hundred less, and if still shot image quality is the only thing that matters to you, you can even knock it down to the Mark 3, the Mark 2, or even the Mark 1 has FANTASTIC image quality at a MUCH more competitive price. The Mark 1 is phenomenal value and for under $400 I'd choose it over the S9 if all you seek is a great camera and you don't need the flip out screen or 4k recording.
    I personally find the Mark 4 the most interesting bang for the buck in the RX100 series.

  • @Yjn75
    @Yjn75 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    With the camera you can zoom in much farther (especially in the new RX100 M6), that's one thing (on its own the reason to prefer a camera). You can be more creative with the camera- like shutter speed effects, exposure, etc, apart from bokeh (which the phone produces artificially and with questionable quality). You can edit RAW pictures as well.

      It's not the s9 fault, when he tranfered the videos to his mac, his mac and samsung don't mix well, the mac saturated stuff so much, especially the red, normal s9 saturates a little

    • @ivo2
      @ivo2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Possibly. Well I don't have Mac to compare. I don't have s9. Only S6,7,recently 8. But when I compare S8 with Canon g7x the difference is soo massive. And g7x mark2 is even much better in many regards, but Sony RX100 mark2 is a little better with the pictures. Sony RX100 mark 6 is so many generations advanced, so I presume is much better than Mark 2 that I use to work with. So how can they possibly compare. I bet that the pictures of Samsung S9 don't compare even with Sony RX100 mark 1. There are only 2 ways people can see otherwise. 1. if they are half blind or if they are looking on amazing big phone screen and smaller screen on Sony RX100 m6 and say. - O, this are so similar. Please open on big screen like PC monitor.

    If you're an ordinary user samsung/ other phones has tweeked the camera saturation/ exposures. So you'll have a better auto camera. "No" a camera phone is not a raw image. Its edited on the time you shoot.

      @@TheEverydayDad Ehh, it's adequate. But there's a huge issue with the phone cameras getting slower over time as the phone gets slower (samsung through Note 5 anyway, Huawei some versions) so you'll click the "take a picture" button and it just ... doesn't for long enough that you miss the shot, or blur it as your hand gets tired. If I'm trying to get a document to my insurance company or ask someone via text "is this the thing you meant" then no one cares. But if someone in my family wants a picture of our dog, or on a trip, or something amazing outside - well the phone cameras we've tried so far suck in comparison to any point and shoot. Once you step up to a DSLR and get good lenses it's night and day *if you're planning to take a picture*.
      And now that I've started learning RawTherapee with raw files, it's even better.

    I think a lot of companies out there are using the words "4k" and " best vlogging camera" as bait and the average "i dunno anything about videography but i wanna be a vlogger" consumer out there almost immediately takes the bait. I think everyone should do a little bit of research when buying these expensive products. And thanks to people like Everyday Dad, some of us don't have to waste time and money because you do an amazing job reviewing these new cameras or action cameras.

    It took me a while to guess which one is which on your twitter feed, it’s really amazing that Samsung has this kind of quality. Supposedly they are making their own image sensor now, their mirrorless was actually well received but the photography community, hope they will provide some compilation for the market. Great video, one strange thing is I can’t find your video in my subsection feed, I did receive the notification and email tho.

    So basically the S9 is an overly saturated RX100V.
    Did you check the color profile? I understood from what I've read online that the S9's photos looks less saturated and more natural on the screen itself.
    Besides can't you reduce the saturation? I think if you do so it will be amazing!
    That is what I like about my Nexus 6P's camera, the colors are very natural.

    I use the Panasonic LX10 which is very similar to the Sony RX100 but at about half the price-$550. Panasonic's contrast (DFD) system has gotten so fast that for stills it is essentially the same as the ones you tested. I am a retired professional photographer and need the RAW files I can get with a real camera to really be able to have to most versatility. I think for the average person now days, the S9 would be the better choice. For me the LX10 gives me such high quality video, I can use it as a third camera angle with my GH5 and G85. I like that you can charge the battery in-camera with USB. It has a 15 minute video recording limit at 4K. I really think the LX10 is a fantastic value for the money. There is so much more the RX100 and LX10 can do that the S9 cannot do though IF you are a real photographer. But that is was not the point of your video, so I do think you did a great job comparing the two from the standpoint of today's average shooter. Being an old guy, I remember the days when the average shooter used real cameras and I confess I'm a little sad to see the lack of thought with today's cell phone photographers. Seems like over 90% of all shots are portrait orientation, including video which really drives me crazy! Most of the time the portrait snapshots have half the picture showing sky or dirt/floor...

    For average (amateur) users , s9 is enough ,but because they will not transfer their photos on pc and reviewing them on big screen. Also average consumer doesn't print photos anymore.
    1. For viewing photos on phone screen only, Samsung s4 is more than enough.
    2. S9 photos is oversaturated, it looks artificially.
    3. Where is low light (or high iso)comparison ?
    4. Where is flash light photos comparison?
    5. Where is zoom comparison ( oh no, s9 doesn't have zoom )?
    6. Why need for 4k recording on a phone , when average consumer don't know or want to
    edit videos for big screen( because watching 4k video on a phone is ridiculous)
    7. They will stream 4k wirelessly from phone to tv ? Good luck with that.
    I am not going to mention benefits of raw shooting , manual adjusting , 4k editing here, because ,you're right - Sony rx 100 is NOT for average user. THEREFORE , my point is; Samsung s9 and Sony rx100v are NOT comparable.
    You better try to compare point and shot 200-300$ camera to any phone. That would be more meaningfull.

    The Galaxy S9+ microphone is without comparison. I once recorded 3 hours of a music show in which friends of mine were playing. 3 hours on a tripod (the galaxy records non-stop as long as it has battery, which can record for 4 hours more or less), sound very loud, at night, and I though it would end up shitty. I was very impressed, the video was quite nice, and the audio was amazing, as good as it gets from an external record. I already tried Zoom H1, Tascam DR-05... They record, then we edit the sound a lot and it maybe is usable. The audio from the band was so clean in the Galaxy that it became my b-roll camera and my audio recorder, because I like to record rock bands performing in my city. I'm completely in love with this phone.

    Just bought rx100 m4 about US 620
    already considered all the points mentioned .
    My reason for the rx100 m4 is
    1. For travelling use and lots of video
    2. Though rx eats batteries But simply resolved by taking 4 batteries
    3. Rx has 3x zoom n say 6x to keep good quality but s9 1x and s9 plus say 2x
    3. S9 battery couldn't change n could not support numerous videos . Run out fast n need long time charging to re perform.
    I brought a wx500 n 2 s6 travelling 7 days ago. Wx500 broken n thr two s6 done their duty with flying colors. But lost a lot of beautiful scenery need 2x 3x zooming.
    Here in Hk s9 is us 800 and s9 plus 100 more.
    S9 iso performance is not sufficiently tested here but i belive could not beat rx over iso 3200.
    The following people may suitable purchase s9 instead of rx
    1. Not video fever . .( say 100 clips a day )
    2. No zooming requiement ( though 2x digital zoom perform well in 4k, seems 2 streets away in quality. )
    3. super lightweight travel fever guys.
    I brought two s6 mainly for timelapse and fix to stabilizer Feiyu for walking video.
    The compact camera for general recordings as i have no worries about power supply.
    I think s10 in future should have 4xzoom. And the rx100 series may obsolete.

    I personally have a Nikon D7500 and a Galaxy S8. I considered this kind of expensive point and shoot cameras but the sensor size is too small to feel a big difference with smartphones so for me it's not worth it. Everything below APS-C is not worth it. On the other hand with cameras such as my D7500 or your Sony a6300, the difference is big enough (bokeh, low light quality, zoom, etc.) to justify buying and transporting it in addition to your phone.

    No phone camera will ever be as good as a dedicated camera for obvious reasons ( larger sensor, better image processing etc ) but the fact the phone cameras are getting better and better with each generation, it sure eliminates the necessity of carrying around a dedicated camera for day-to-day events/activities.

    I consider myself to be a semi professional photographer. I have a OnePlus5. The camera takes 20 frames a second continuous, it has 20 Megapixels, 2 f1.7 lenses and the best image stabilisation for video I have ever used. It won't replace My Canon cameras but I really wish the cameras had some of the phones features and ease of use. I do mix in some clips taken with the phone into some of videos I make and no one would know what they were made on!

    Great video, but I see a serious flaw here: try to compare those two in low light conditions out of this studio. Try shooting and video recording in street at night or maybe in a concert. That's where you'll always see the BIG difference between a dedicated camera and a cell phone.

  • @schnubbel76
    @schnubbel76 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    For a regular user who wants to shoot some nice pictures here and there the Samsung Camera is sure enough. I went the other way, i wanted to go more semi-professional on photos and i bought myself the sony RX Mark III, wich is way cheaper than the mark V (i know it does not film in 4k, but i dont need and want that - not doing much video, but many photos).
    Then i realized i will never need an expensive smartphone anymore. Now i can buy a 200 bucks Smartphone wich does all i need. And the camerawork is handled in a more professional way by the Sony RX 100 III. If you spent some time learning photography and learn to handle all options of a full camera, you create pictures you never could with the samsung Smartphone. And it is still small and compact compared to the Alpha 6000 or above.
    But like i said, it (the samsung) will suit most common users and is sure good for vlogging and does nice standard point and shoot pictures . So.... yes, why not.

    I think that the V30 is what you should be comparing against. If shooting in Auto is all you're about, then by all means, but the V30 packs a serious punch once you start dialing some settings into its camera's manual mode, which is more or less what you'd do with a dedicated point and shoot/dlsr camera anyway.

    Actually, the main point in comparing these two:
    1.) If you want to print, preserve image quality, keep all details for editing like Photoshop. --- get RX100
    2.) If you only need the image for FB or instagram. --- get S9 or any other phone out there.
    I hope the upcoming photo enthusiasts will not pick the phone, you will regret it later.
    I own D7200, iphoneX, S7edge and I have images from friend's mate 20pro, S9 and RX100 to compare.
    Also phone's pictures seem good on a small screen, due to the AI enhancements.
    Just try to view your FB photos in a 24" monitor, you can see the difference.

    I don't know if you had the s9 set to a lower resolution picture quality for all of the sample photos but I could see that at one point at least you had the s9 either on the 16:9 or 18:5:9 crop setting, both of which are lower resolution.

    I would have liked to have seen a still pic that was cropped. Cellphones are great till you have to crop or digitally zoom.

    Does the Panasonic GX1 with a 20mm f1.7 pancake lens (h020e) perform better or worse than this s9 phone in the night? Thank you SO much. And if the s9 is better. Which camera for like 400 dollar is better than the s9 in the night??

    I'm a big Samsung Galaxy fanatic. I am about to pull the trigger on an S9. That said... viewing this on a 50" 4k screen, I can see the quality is better on the RX100V. There is simply more dynamic range. However, most people probably watch TH-cam on a phone screen, so I doubt it matters? The camera that's always with me is usually the winner anyway, which is a Samsung Galaxy of course.

    in S9 you need to set ISO to 50 for best result indoor as well as set the aperture to 2.4 since it is the last galaxy s that still has dual aperture

    Phones' cameras are amazing for casual photos, but as soon as you want to play with zoom or depth of field you feel the limitations. I shoot a lot with my iPhone SE but if I'm going on a trip I take with me my RX100.
    For us (casual photographers) the RX100 is even better than a full-fledged DSLR because it gives us (kind of) the same capabilities but in a smaller and portable package. It's the best in its niche, thus its price.

    Did you try the super slow motion for both of them , s9 can take 960 fps for only 2 secs and can not do manual focus at all .

    The reason the rx100 did not do as well in the exposure auto correction is because the photosites are larger and at 30fps the rx100 is gathering more light therefore it can't come down from its lowest native gain.

    Good video if you are interested on impressions of the video capabilities of both platforms, but it does not focus on the picture quality comparison nearly enough for photos. There is one comparison jpeg comparison and the rest is a comparison on how it takes videos.
