St Louis: At least 120 children shot in a year in one of the US' most violent cities | ITV News

  • Driving into St Louis from the airport north of the city is a sobering journey. For miles, the urban deprivation that has blighted so much of the "Mound City" is starkly visible. Once grand 19th century homes are left to decay, many now completely derelict.
A potent mix of gangs, guns and drugs has slowly taken its toll. But so have demographics that have seen a 60% population fall since the 1950s.
The city government says of the 129,000 total properties in St Louis, approximately 25,000 are considered vacant and abandoned.
The gun crime figures are even more startling.
    US Correspondent Dan Rivers reports.

I grew up in South St. Louis within city limits, great childhood there. Used to go downtown to the Landing, Strassenfest, Hill Day, Bevo Day, VP Fair, never felt afraid. I moved away in the 80's just because I had the travel bug. It is so sad to see what has become of my hometown and a beautiful city. I think a big problem is kids grow up with no father figures in their lives. Whether it's gangs, drugs or poverty and lack of a decent education. You can't expect teachers to have to teach kids right from wrong, that's up to the parents.

To sum up the problem for those not familiar with St. Louis: ◾Huge lack of dads to guide young children. Statistically, lack of 2 parents (especially considering the absent parent is typically the father) increases a young person's likelihood of having a run-in with law enforcement down the road, regardless of skin color, ethnicity, etc.◾Urban parents (often single moms) insisting that their teen-to-40s kids' bad choices (crime, drugs, etc.) are the fault of others--like the gov't--and therefore they do not have to make any changes to their urban lifestyle, changes such as bringing *fathers* back into the family◾and a city government that does not provide negative consequences for criminal actions. Black prosecutor Kim Gardner was, as best I can tell, a shady prosecutor whose tenure in the city showed her to be pro-criminal/anti-victim. Her abysmal record for prosecuting crime speaks for itself. (She only won about half of her criminal cases, not a surprise given her pro-criminal mindset). When called on the carpet for certain unethical and possibly illegal dealings, she was quick to play the race/misogyny card. She was about Kim and Kim's brand, not about the city dwellers she was supposed to be protecting. Her legacy to the city was a soaring crime rate.

This is what American Freedom looks like... Forget Apple Pie, there is nothing more American or as American as guns! I will never understand the American obsession with guns. The gun seems to be everything to most Americans, it defines who they are as a people and without it they would not complete. To an American there can be no freedom without guns and no guns without freedom. Americans defines and measure their freedom by how easy it is for them to access guns, form armed militias and terrorize main street.
To most Americans, any country that limits access to weapons and do not give their citizens the right to bear arms, are not free countries. Americans cannot understand why any society would support and implement weapons of death restrictions and as such they regard the people of these countries as being oppressed. Even when it is the people themselves who define and implements their gun restriction laws. From birth most Americans are engineered to worship guns and to see it as a vital part of their Republic! The problem comes when they turn a blind eye to the illegal export of weapons of death for profits.

You over think too much, not all americans are obsessed with guns, been here 30 years and i never owned a gun or have ever been in a situation where a gun is needed. I also live 30 minutes from one of the most dangerous cities in America (Oakland)

@@sew_gal7340 As a society you are gun clowns, it is a fetish. I am not talking about you individually. Small Arms Survey states that 46% of Global civilian gun ownership is in the USA. 120.5 firearms for every 100 American residents. That is 393,347,000 firearms circulating in USA.

I think most people still miss the point!
There are tens of thousands of people in Rural America who own guns and are very law abiding. Although you would certainly not want to be a hog in their cross hairs. Where as most of those kids and young adults are raised in broken homes, with free access to guns meaning something totally different to them. That is the problem and it won't go away unless those communities deal with it, from the parents down.

    • @jamaicantillidie6626
      @jamaicantillidie6626 ปีที่แล้ว

@@chrischris8550 I agree that Investment in human development, social engineering, economic opportunities, and education is needed to combat dysfunctional behaviour running rampant in all societies. However, giving dysfunctional semi-literate people, some with mental illness, easy access to weapons of death, is like throwing fuel on fire. Looking at the age of the mass shooters says it all. There are mass shooters who are not old enough to legally buy a beer, but can legally own several high powered weapons of death! There is a reason why the USA is number one when you compare Homicide rates between the Developed First World countries. It is so easy to get a burner, as it is called in the hood and Homicides rates are advertisement for more gun ownership. If every criminal around you are strapped to the teeth, armed to the max, then what choice does ordinary people have. SO, I understand the need to arm themselves, especially when the leadership is not doing anything about it. While lesser developed countries can scream poverty as a lame excuse for their dysfunctional, underdeveloped citizens. The USA is one of the Worlds Richest and Most Powerful country on the face of this planet. What excuse does it have for not Investing in human development, social engineering and education of ALL its citizens. Also the USA have one of the highest prison population on the planet. About 2.1 Million Americans are commodities in the For Profit Prison Industrial Complex trading on the Financial Exchanges.

      Freedom without guns?
Australia had lots of freedom during covid right?
England can't even own knives, the police will visit you for making a slight on the internet but can't manage to solve violent crimes.
Canada truckers strike another sign of freedom?
French President implemented higher retirement by force, WOW what freedom.
Ukraine got invaded by Russia and has to ask for more guns, there's freedom.
The Blackman interviewed stated he could hear the gun shots (heard not seen), then asks where the 15 year got a military gun.
How did he know the young man was 15 and how did he determine it was a military gun.
Must be that freedom to imagine things and to lie.

Unfortunately, you are being fed a lot of bad information from a lot of differing groups. The real violence can be dealt with. However, there is no such thing as military weapons. They have semi automatic rifles and pistols. Starting with facts would help.
Then an honest discussion of the failure of law enforcement at all levels to deal with criminals. Factually, the majority of these violent gang members are repeat offenders. So, we need to start with long prison sentences with no parole for using weapons.
