  • She's fun, she's deadly, she's bananas. She's Missy and the folks over at Big Finish gave her an entire box set of audio adventures all to her self. Michelle Gomez returns to her Doctor Who role as Missy and I get to review this sucker!

I would really recommend the Companions' Chronicle story Mastermind, it features the decayed Master kept prisoner by Unit, fills in a lot of spaces in his timeline and really highlights the hypnosis ability in a way we haven't seen before.

The Monk is a very important player in the then final bunch of Lucie Miller - Eighth Doctor stories. Those would be well worth your time. I say "then" because they did release some stories with Lucie Miller later but they were set before those time-wise.

I think he also appears in Doom Coalition. Also I'm pretty sure that one of his regenerations is one of the various Time Lords played by actors who appeared in Doctor Who prior.

Glad you got to this - I loved it myself, and have had fingers crossed for a review. As someone who's listened - I absolutely enjoyed hearing your thoughts - your reenactment her scenes with the monk was a complete joy. Thank you!
To heed your request for recommendations: The War Master: Anti-Genesis and Rage of the Time Lords boxsets - are absolutely fantastic. Pick your poison - The 8th Doctor comes to visit, or a Master-Dalek teamup (that is genuinely interesting). Missy Series 2 is coming out in the Summer as well - I hope to see your thoughts on that soon. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the recommendation. Must get. Yes the Monk has appeared in other Big Finish, keeping up the tradition started in the 1960s of having a well known comedy actor / personality in the role. Firstly ex-Goodies comedy actor / writer Graeme Garden in different stories with the Eighth and Fifth Doctors, and now stand up comedian Rufus Hound (who was also the Highwayman in 'The Woman Who Lived' ). 🙂

Its clear Michelle Gomez was a great choice in casting for Missy, it was the first thing I was really introduced to her in and then saw her in Adventures of Sabrina and really like her on that to she clearly enjoys playing the complex baddy, you never know if she is entirely evil or not in almost everything she is in.

I just listened to this whole series, and it was all fun and all good stories, but the one that stuck out to me was The Broken Clock. Because it was the most absolutely BONKERS thing I've probably ever heard in the Doctor Who universe as far as a storytelling technique. I still don't understand most of it, and I lost track of how many times I burst out laughing at something the narrator said.

Divorced, Beheaded, Regenerated was my favorite story followed by The Broken Clock. The master stories were my entrance into Big Finish. I still think Day of the Master (part one and two) was shockingly good from Ravenous 4.
Michelle Gomez and Derek Jacobi come back into other audio series it is great. Which is why I recommend River Song volume 5 even for the two stories they were in. Plus U.N.I.T. Cyber Reality for Jacobi appearing in the last story. The War Master stories get better after the second box set (Master of Callous). The 4th box set (Anti Genesis) had this levity to it, that made me want to get all of the Mark Gatiss Master appearances audio stories.
I have already pre-ordered Masterful and Missy series 2, which is going to have more Missy vs. Monk.

I would go a slightly different way. because the Master is kinda unique in his/her Timeline. Oh cant be pre Delgardo, because Delgardo invented the Tissue compression so OH must come after him. But after thats its tricky because. We know
The child / Dreyfus is the first.
Beevers/Pratt is the last of the first regeneration cycle.
Ainley comes after Beevers ......is executed on Skaro
Ainley takes over the body Robertson
Roberts is trapped in the eye of harmony
The Timelords free him from the eye of harmony creating the War-Master
      War-Master into Simm
Now its get confusing....Ainley knows the 12th regeneration of the Doctor (Tennent second regeneration) and the split into the Valeyard.
We also know, Delgardo is regeneration 12 or 13. But not the number of the cycle
So one....Oh comes after Delgardo, is number 13. and burns up into crispy Beevers/Pratt...everyone after Delgardo is second / third cycle
Two.....Simm is pre Delgardo and Missy past Delgardo because Delgardo and Missy both wanted to be the Doctors friend again. But that would also mean Oh after Missy, so the first version of the master, we saw, is something between regeneration 22-27.
Three.... Missy is also pre Delgardo and Delgardo turned into OH + you have to fit the "Dark eye Master" inthere too...somewere
Fourth.... 1. Master, Child/Dreyfus, 2-13"Dark eyes Master", 13 Beevers/Pratt, 14 Ainley, 15 Roberts, 16 War-Master, 17 Simm, 18-21 unknown, 22 Delgardo, 23 Missy, 24 Oh (in this, Ainley or prior must have invented the Tissue compression and you would be right)

Well, time ISN'T a line anyway. Even less so for the Master. Having multiple alternate bodies coupled with ressurections and regenerations their lineage is much more branched than most.
Incidentally, I watched The Land That Time Forgot last night, a 70s movie that had Anthony Ainley as a minor villain submarine crewman.

    • @aducharme01
      @aducharme01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thomasnieswandt8805 There's a bit more in there as well. Alex MacQueen's master was the first post-revival Master, IIRC, with the Jacobi/Simm/Gomez masters coming a bit farther down the line, though presumably within the same regeneration cycle. There might be a few more in between there as well.

    *SPOILERS*
My favourite was definitely the Broken Clock. I found it gripping and hilarious right up to the twist at the end when it was all turned around. I honestly couldn't stop laughing, it was so good. And personally I felt a good lead into the next story, as it changed the tone to a little more darker. I'll give the box a huge thumbs up in that area, the switch between comedy and the dark serious stuff is very fluid and natural.
Divorced, Beheaded, Regenerated was probably my least favourite, but I did love the banter between Missy and the Monk, and after that A Spoonful of Mayhem also felt pretty low. But it was one they almost had to do, and I did still enjoy it.
The Belly of the Beast was what I was waiting for. Missy being the bad guy. I was only disappointed by how little she was in the story. But I'm super excited to see what they do in the next series with the Master Tardis concept. So much potential with that thread. And that's probably all I really want out of the next series, more of Missy being mad, insane, winning and being bad!

  • @antney7745

I've always had mixed feeling about Missy. I've never liked The Master, ever since his first appearance in Terror of the Autons. But Michelle Gomez is just so awesome I can't help but love Missy. Likewise, I've never been interested in audiobooks but you've totally sold me on getting the Missy boxset!

As they are my favourites, I've started working my way through the Big Finish Cyberman stories. So far I've heard Spare Parts, which is fantastic and The Silver Turk. Also pretty good and you can tell has recently received a loose adaptation in the show. Next up in the complete Cyberman boxset. Which I am looking forward to.
I still think Michelle Gomez would have been an amazing Doctor.

I'd reccomend some of the cheaper content so you dont end up feeling like you might've wasted a big chunk of cash on it. The 8th Doctor story Chimes of Midnight is relatively inexpensive & it's a very fun ride. I'd also really recommend Caerdroia (but you might wanna read the wiki to get some context first) and Human Resources, which are both really fun 8th Doctor stories.
If you're more familiar with NuWho & are willing to spend a little extra, the first Tennant & Donna box set is really good, especially Death and The Queen

I'd say so, but maybe wait and see if it goes on sale, or if they make the first episode free. They've been doing those sort of things a lot recently at the Big Finish website. I personally Started with Jenny: the Doctor's Daughter box set a couple years back and was very pleased with the quality. And like with Missy, you don't need any other knowledge other than what's been in the TV show. The only thing that might trip you up is the Monk, but a google search can give you all you need to know about the character.

Depends on what you want. If you want a companion series for NuWho, I'd recommend Diary of River Song, UNIT, or Tourchwood. They all have the original cast, Tourchwood serves as a season 5 and 6. If you want a classic Doctor but don't know much about Classic Who, then the Eighth Doctor Adventures are literally designed for you. If you just want more episodes of the Tenth Doctor, then the Tenth Doctor Adventures. And if you want to know what happened in the Time War then there are a lot of different povs to choose from.

I enjoyed the first three stories. The third one was interestingly and ambitiously complex with respect to what was happening. Hmm. The problem with recommending things that Big Finish have done with the Monk is that.. his presence in either version they've done is often a massive spoiler. The one that isn't it their Third Doctor Adventures Set 4, which after a few sets of the line with a recast 3rd Doctor and Katy Manning as Jo Grant that don't have many returning monsters and villains, this set has a Cybermen story, by Marc Platt who wrote Spare Parts and Ghost Light, and a Monk story that doesn't hide his presence, he's on the box. Both are really good stories, stand alone pretty much and are worth a listener's time. Each set of the series is 2 4-part stories that basically stand alone.

I really don't like the type of character Missy is. This is exactly the reason why I hate the modern takes on Deadpool and Harley Quinn. They just do random things for the sake of entertainment of the audience, and it stops being entertaining to me quick. Being random doesn't equal being funny, and being random is not a personality.

    • @HereComesPopoBawa
      @HereComesPopoBawa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

By "random", do you mean that their motivations aren't clear? I've never assumed that because I am not told a character's motivations, that they haven't any. But I can understand why some might prefer them to be more explicit.

@@HereComesPopoBawa No, by random I mean they just do weird things for fun, like Missy making her head grow in the TV, or writing "Hey, Missy, you so fine, you so fine you blow my mind".
