pal arabs are unique in all of arab and muslim world (which itself in a lot of trouble). its the one place where nationalism is aligned with islamism 90% of the time. in most places nationalism is against islamism in 50-60-70 % of the issues depending on country. for this reason its impossible to contest islam in their minds more than anywhere else. pal arabs are also unique in that an absurd amount of money keeps getting thrown at them but economy remains non-existent.

Given some alternative education and choice you’re going to find they are people like any other people. Governments have done the worst imaginable things but that doesn’t make all their citizens culpable. Mr. Doran became well known as an wise voice In international relations because he was a contrarian to the stablished order and called out policy mistakes before they happened. Dear Mike, I think the main difference between Palestinian and Saudi youth is that the former have been told by the Arab world that they exist to fight israel, and it is their holy duty to fight israel to restore the prestige Muslims held in the land. This infuses their lives with deep spiritual meaning and purpose. You should check out the various interview with a Gaza convert to Judaism Yaron Avraham, who explains how he was “trained” to fight israel from a young age, doing things like lying in a grave to get used to death when he was a young child. That’s enough to know right from wrong.

Michael, your insight is so organic, in depth, and unerring that I'm surprised you get Gaza/Hamas so wrong. You have the bravery and conviction to get Turkey and the Syria buffer correct but you want to pretend that Hamas isn't fully ingrained in the strip. There is no "weeding out" the shahid from quiescent mandatorily affiliated citizens and you should know better. You cannot overcome full ideological capture simply because people want to get on with their lives.

Why does Israel refuse to simply assert its rights to Gaza and Judea and Samaria, based on the Mandate? Egypt and Jordan illegally invaded and occupied those Israeli territories, and now that it’s clear no Arab entity in those areas is willing to live in peace, Israel has the right to retake the territory. It also has a right to demand the expulsion of those who refuse to recognize Israeli sovereignty over those areas. Millions of ethnic Germans were expelled and returned to Germany, after WW II, because people in many European countries didn’t trust ethnic Germans to be loyal citizens, after what the Nazis had done. It’s no different, and Israel has more than enough evidence that people in these areas cannot be trusted.

I think that we are imposing a narrative and a solution on Israel that makes sense and is easy to explain to people who do not have to personally feel the results. Essentially, this is a solution that is sellable without the requirement to learn any lessons from history other than what is already in circulation. This is pop history of the Middle East 101, with historical references obscured, distorted, and denied. Netanyahu has a lifelong education on what happens when you approach this problem from a Western perspective. It is a perspective that has Israel going through the same motions on a periodic basis with the problem that the enemy, the shapeshifting yet amorphous enemy, is constantly able to work on gaining strength and influence by doing a full court press on Western institutions. We have seen their progress in the tunnels, the weapons stockpiling, the indoctrination of their children, their future fighters, the reduction of Western institutions to absurdity and open irrationality. Again and again, when anyone mentions the situation in Gaza and the problem of the Palestinian Jihad with wide Islamic support, the same cann'ts and don'ts are invoked. No credit is given to those in Israel who actually know what must be done. They are silenced because the solution can only be understood and internalized by someone who understands the mounting danger. It is glaringly obvious that the Jihadis understand that they are on a slow progression toward what can only be a victory for them. When one listens to other Arabs who have the ear of the leadership and the Arab street, it is impossible to overlook the fact that they have not changed their goals at all. Tactics change after they get a beating; but they have already accepted all their losses ahead of any operation. Look how fast Syria and Lebanon have changed the power structures. This was no accident or windfall. Golani did not just walk into Syria and take over by luck. The word was put out to not resist him so that he could put the new plan into place. The losses were accepted; and there is already a rapid implementation of a new battle plan along with a media plan. The only thing moving faster than the takeover of Syria is the media blitz that the new Isis has implemented. They are going to play nice for a while until they get settled; but their talk is about how the Palestinians need to get their land back, and how Israel must be defeated. Western diplomacy is in fantasy land; and that is the strength of the Jihad. Just look how quickly the media respond whenever the terrorists say something that makes sense. They know how to do that; but it is manipulation. It is indeed rare to find anyone anywhere who does not prefer being manipulated to doing anything that will reshuffle the cards. There is probably no harder sell to the American Deep State than to actually do what is necessary.
I feel that what happens to Israel foreshadows what is intended to happen to America. Our weapons will not help us if we do not have the experience of internalizing the required shift in understanding the precepts of the general Islamic situation. These regimes everywhere are faced with the problem that if they lose control of their populations, they will lose everything. It will be worse than the French revolution. The attractive toys and ways of the West are not necessary to a despotic Islamic vision of the World. Technological achievements are unimportant to them when compared with their delicate situation. To modernize their people to fit the progress of the rest of the World would be impossible unless all Islamic regimes were to agree and work together. This will not happen unless they are forced into that position like Japan and Germany. The reason Russia and China are involved in such bold behavior is that they understand this fundamental scenario better than the West. They know that we have an incredible and possibly insurmountable series of mental blocks that preclude a solution.

Losing land exactly. You do not negotiate with terrorists ‼️‼️‼️. E should. Take over the land and take all the billions being given to Gaza and use it for infrastructure roads hospitals schools and approve the school curriculum nd let those who want to leave to leave and encourage those that don’t want to leave to go as well and to let Jews who want to live there come back to our land. He deal is disgusting

Michael Doran: "I think I understand the Arab world." No one who truly understands any subject with serious depth would be so arrogant to say something like that. Dunning-Kruger effect in action. Embarrassing.

It would be helpful for Mike and Gadi to post a link to the Tablet story on the rise of Iran regime appeasement/realignment in MAGA world. Mike is quite eloquent on this. Some of us are old enough to remember the Brezinski/Gates push for this via their CFR pamphlet in 2004.

Regarding how easy it will be to re-program people: I think Gadi is right, but not all due to their faith. It's because they have a visible enemy in front of them, and their rulers ensure continuing conflict. Unfortunately, there is no good way out of enmity but victory, followed by occupation and supervision over what's taught and preached. Here, Mike is right - it's possible, but will take time.

1.Return the Israeli land to the Israelis who kicked out of Gaza for peace that never came. 2. Take monetary damages from Gaza to pay for the damages of that day in October
    3. If there is any other land left over make them military bases
    4. What about the palis they are Egyptian and supported by Qatar arent they

I can think of no other reason to placate President Trump with regard to the hostages, if not to do with the medium to long term goals regarding Iran.
I would also like to think that Israel has a pager like operation planned for the terrorists soon to be released in the deal.

@Mike: Netanyahu is beholden to his American-leaning Chief of Staff who has a special ops background. That's part of the problem as well; so they're continually taking an area and then retreating and moving to the next theater.

and... I can't agree more with Michael about Sachs. Sachs' description of events is just a one-sided carefully crafted l. i. e. One hidden assumption there is that UA (and Eastern Europe more generally). Interestingly. Has no opinion or rights of its own. Supposedly, it is rightfully a tsar's backyard and any attempt to break free is just Western influence. The only question I have is how much... (Must be very sweet!) he got for that "perspective".
