UPDATE: There seems to be some sort of issues with the innards of the A1. After a while, the entire nib is covered in ink and the ink is slowly making its way up the nib unit as you use the pen (as you protract and retract the nib). I think somehow the nib unit rubs against the insides and ink migrates up the unit. I don't thing the nib unit is damaged... or has any issues; more like the actual innards of the pen. Additionally, the roll stop on the pen fall off :). It looks like it just slides on some tiny grooves. I've added some Shellac on it and hopefully it won't fall off anymore. Also I have decided to NOT buy another Pilot nib unit to replace the one in the pen. Since there might be some issues with the pen, there is no point in getting another more expensive unit and potentially ruin it. I'll leave it as is and put it in a drawer somewhere for now.
The "innards" of my A1 has not presented any problems. My nib is not covered with ink. I did, however, replace the nib unit which came with the pen with a 18K Pilot nib unit (broad nib). I managed to find one for $70. I now have what is commonly called a Frankenpilot. I own the mustard yellow Majohn/Pilot, and I am thoroughly enjoying writing with the pen. I do use the Majohn converter because it does hold just a bit more ink, and less problematic to ink. I have wanted a Pilot VP with either a med. or broad nib for years. However, a med. or broad nib causes the pen to cost $170+. I can buy a Pilot VP with a fine nib for $100, and I would then have to purchase separately another nib unit. I am finding the finish on my Majohn/Moonman smooth. Thankful for this option, for not all FP collectors have deep pocket.
I'm happy to hear it worked out for you and that you enjoy your pen. That is all that matters in the end. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to share your experience! :)
@@eugenborcan : UPDATE: It is now seven months later, and still no problems. I now own (4) Majohn A1s. I use the nib which comes with the pen. Now own: Matte black; orange; blue; green. The nib on my green A1 is surprisingly smooth, and did not require any micromesh tweaking. Of the three new A1s, in only one do I use the converter. How has your experience been over the past 7 months. In the future I will purchase a Pilot VP medium nib unit for the blue pen, for my writing experience with the broad Pilot VP nib unit has not been problematic at all. Love the Majohn A1. 💖
Hi Kelly - really appreciate you took the time and came back with an update! :) Happy to hear you are pleased with the pens. Since with mine I had the issue with ink creeping up the nib unit and the roll stopper falling out, I haven't really touched it since then. However, I noticed that the prices have come down a little bit so I might get another one - maybe I just got unlucky with the first one.
Just ordered an orange with clip moonman, 40$ USA dollars delivered. Wanted to try this click style fountain pen but dislike very fine nibs but you say it wider than that so I hope mine is the same. Thx for vid.
Based on my experience, hopefully your nib will be just as Medium then :). Enjoy your pen and I appreciate if you can let me know if your nib was fine or not. Thanks!
By far best comparison between a1 and VP I've seen. Not sure of ethnics of both sides. Moonman copied a pilot design. But they sell it about a quarter price. I don't know why pilot let patent expire, and is the extra price all quality ? Pilot has many more color options, and seems best quality. But moonman might be fine on a budget.
Thank you! That is true, ethics will always be a concern... especially when ethics tend to be very "individual". The way I see it, while I agree that MoonMan could of made something more unique, legally they are entitled :/ - but then again I am no lawyer so I am only guessing and could be very wrong about it. Bottom line, it exists... some will be happy about it and some not all. I don't carry a flame for either one - but I welcome the options and price diversity; having more options is always good! :)
Thanks for the video. Just a suggestion. If one of the pens is black, it would be better to use a lighter background. That dark background makes it difficult to compare the physicality of the pens when you put them next to each other as the Moonman is black. Thanks for video.
Thank you for the suggestion. I will try and see if that will make any difference but usually is hard to take good shots of black pens especially when they are next to other pens - if you adjust for the black pen, you over-expose the lighter colored pen. The other problem I encountered with a black pen is if I have a lighter background the the camera will try and focus on the background more since there is more contrast on the background... always a little bit of fight... especially with a black matte pen.
As far as I understand, since the patent has expired, legally, Moonman/MaJohn is able to copy it. I don't think anyone can do anything about that... it is what it is (fortunate or unfortunate, whatever angle you are looking at it).
@@eugenborcan it is good, just lets hope to buy cheaper pilot knockoff converters or some advanced stuff. Moonman offered pilot cartridges with caps so thats one nice thing too
As a pen lover I have seen one of the most rotten presentation of this kind in most idiotic way. A Chinese product compared with Japanese product. China is reputed for duplicating. So a comparison between Moonmar and Vanishing Point Pilot pen is a foolish act. VP PIKOT PENS are establihed pen since decades. Moonmar is the recent one, so what about it's durabikity and other things? This is simply a paid or a sponsered presentation. If this is not so how a Moonmar pen is compared with VP?
Thank you for taking time and leaving a comment - you are very kind :). However, before jumping to conclusions, I kindly ask to at least make the effort and watch the entire review and pay attention to my comments, especially in the Conclusion sections. You might be surprised by what I have to say. Anyway, I am not here to argue about pens... each to its own and to whatever they like or not... And no, unfortunately no one is paying me for anything... sorry to disappoint you, but these are my honest opinions; like them or not. Wish you all the best!
@Mahesh Bhansali - You may very well be a “pen lover”, but you definitely don’t love your fellow human being. This person clearly has spent a lot of time and energy in putting together an earnest and in-depth review, which has been helpful to many people. You may not agree with him, and that is your right. But prior to attacking him, you owe him the courtesy of listening to his entire review. I am presuming that you understand basic English, but are simply unable to control your anger and impatience. But a few words of brotherly advice: 1) nobody likes an ingrate, and 2) try to elevate your thinking above the level of dogs and monkeys.
