    I received mine about two weeks ago. Returning what's left of it today. I used it about 10 times before the nib stopped retracting. Opened the barrel to find the spring had displaced. No amount wiggling and shoving would get it to stay back in place. I didn't like the nib anyway (though I have a couple of Mahjong pens that are fine).
    Glad you like yours and mine could be bad luck. Just a heads-up on what could happen and how hard it is to do a simple repair.

    Guilloche engravers are indeed pretty cool. Ever since I saw an Art Déco cigarette case with an intricate guilloche pattern and a gorgeous turquoise enamel on it as a kid, I've been fascinated with them and wanted to know how they produced a pattern that complex. Especially the ones that can connect multiple of the simple patterns to produce a compound oscillating pattern are really interesting.

    Hi DB. I just barely received that exact same silver-stripes version in the mail. I absolutely love the pen, DB. I think that this particular model is trying to emulate an existing chrome-stripes version from Pilot. I switched out the Majohn nib unit with a Pilot vanishing point nib unit. So does diping the tip for around 15 - 25ish seconds, and then wiping off as usual... The feeds work on capillary action, and some are just a tad "vapor lock" prone from an otherwise "sealed" cartridge or converter...
      Propping a pen nib-down for a few minutes can do it...
      AND a casual dip-swish in ordinary water is a helpful "jump-start"... Especially useful for pens prone to "hard-starts" whether for leaving them sit too long or just for "cheap-*ss tuning" before you quite get them "right"...
      NOTHING against your suggestion... It just might help someone out having a couple options... ;o)

    • @Doodlebud

      I dipped my pen endless in water, ran it under the faucet, dipped then used a tissue to draw out the water and ink just wouldn't flow done the feed to the nib. Left it sitting nib down for 30min, etc. So did 1 drop of ink and BOOM it started flowing. My other ones were no problem but the silver one wasn't cooperating

    I just got one of the MaJohn A1 pens EF nib, with "white grid" body. It looks fantastic, feels solid in the hand, the click is super-smooth and satisfying, and it writes smooth and consistently. For $40 it is a FANTASTIC pen, I think. I also have an A2 which is fine little pen (and half the price of the A1) but it feels much lighter and less expensive than the metal-bodied A1.
    My only disappointment is that is isn't really "white"--it's more of a "titanium silver-gray" with bright chrome accents.
    I bought it to match a pocket knife and wine tool I had which have whit G10 scales, and although it looks fine with them, it's not really as "matchy-matchy" as it would be if the finish were actually "white". I'm seriously considering giving it a coat of translucent cream enamel to give it a sort of "enameled guilloche" look, to make it look more like my other EDC items...

    I'm an early adopter of the A1 as a test balloon for the VP to see whether the clip would bother me and liked it so much that I bought a VP and a Decimo. And then I found out about the new pattern. I now have one of each in silver. Interestingly, my matte black lays down a fairly generous 0.4 line with a Pilot Pink cartridge and the stripey one writes drier and gives me a 0.3 (?) line with a Pilot Black cartridge. I haven't inked up the fish scale one yet. I'll see how it'll write. I still want a vintage Capless.

    Hey Doodlebud, Thanks again for the video! Mine showed up last Wednesday, also from 365Days Stationery Store. I started in reverse; first purchasing the original Pilot VP and was curious about the Majohn's A1. This is my second A1 and I've noticed that this new pen (Fisk Scale pattern) is a couple of grams lighter than the VP without it feeling "cheap". It's not much but it does feel a bit more comfortable. As you mentioned, the mechanism is not as smooth as a VP but it comes close. So far, it's pretty solid and seems to have good build quality. Let's see how it holds up!!!

    Love my matte black A1 with the clip, very excellent copy of the VP. I definitely plan to get an actual VP at some point, and maybe a VP nib unit with a fine nib for the A1. The A1 makes a great work pen vs the VP for me because if anything happens to it I'm only out around $38, not $200+. It's also nice because it is retractable, so no fussing with the cap.
    The only problem I have with my A1 is the nib tends to leak a little. Unlike some people, mine seems to "leak" from the slit of the nib, not where the feed goes into the nib unit.

    Another another carefully executed review showing and explaining many details. But no, I think Pilot won"t be scared at all. I've got an A1 of the first generation, overpaid it as I didn't know Aliexpress at that time and was very disappointed because the pen started to leak after one day of flat storage on a table (in a box, TG). Only a swap of the inkconverter (from Majohn model to the Pilot Con-40) stopped the leakage. Other users with the same problem swapped the nib (buying the extremly expensive Pilot VP nibs) to solve the leakages. I was so disappointed and never touched the A1 again, but bought instead the original Pilot VP, a purchase which kept me happy all the time. Since then I didn't even look at the much cheaper A2 version of Majohn and definetly won't buy the new A1 (V2), even though they look very attractive in their new colors and attractive patterns. Just wish these came in a bigger nib than just Ef. I'll probably have to do some work on them to get them where I want them as far as smoothness and wetness. I opened the tines on my maroon one to get it a bit more wet. Nice looking finishes on the Majohn A1s! The Pilot VP size is on the verge of too girthy for me.
    The decimo is my favorite retractable fountain pen. That's why I got a couple of Majohn A2 faceted(18 facets really pay off in the light);the orange color is delightful; kind of a pinkish-orangey color.
    I also got a dark green A2. The The Pilot 18k nibs fit perfectly in them should you have them available. The Pilot steel-nib VP unit might be a good option if they are available separately.
    I hope I can find a vintage Pilot Capless someday; but,I'm pessimistic and don't want to wait for the day.
    The Majohn A2/A1 are very cool pens; but,the nibs leave a lot to be desired. If one is able to do the nibbage work they are great pens. Having to use a Majohn extra-fine nib is a struggle for me. The Majohn nibs I've had are dry, scratchy,needle-points that need more attention than I am currently able to provide to them.

I’m really happy to have paid for the Pilot originals. The presence of these much cheaper copies somehow makes me appreciate the originals even more.

The copy is definitely good for that purpose and I won't be devastated if I lose my VPs or if someone with sticky fingers gets a hold of it.

    What you call "fish scale" patterning looks like knurling to me. [EDIT: That is, until you viewed it under the microscope. I've no idea what the technical description would be, but certainly not "fish scaling" or knurling]. In any case, it is textured and easy to grip. I like that the MaJohn is recessed at the center joint and doesn't have two proud (bulging) rings in the center like the Pilot (which is why I like my Decimo; the rings are much less pronounced).
    This is a minor complaint, but I always notice when someone says "anyways;" because I majored in English in school. My professors always corrected anyone they heard saying it. Anyway is the correct word choice. Anyways is a colloquial variant of the word anyway. It is almost universally considered incorrect.

    Another great video! I've had a VP for a few years now. I have the silver fish scale A1 on the way. I've had an A2 for a few weeks. I inserted a genuine Pilot cartridge into the A2, but all of the ink leaked out the front when I extended the nib. It just completely gushed out, nearly emptying the cartridge. I'm not sure what happened as I'm very familiar with the inner workings. After cleaning the pen, I filled one of the empty cartridges included with the A2, and it works fine. Will I buy another Majohn? Probably. Will I buy another VP? Definitely.

I’m also curious about the durability of the coatings, since the first majohn a1s have been reported to flake off within months. Are both Silver and Black coatings on these new finishes flake off at the same rate, or is one of the other more durable?

    Hi DB!: Not really a fan of the retractable FP's, but that Silver striped one is pretty nice looking. Were both the Majohn pens an extra-fine nib? The writing looked the same size, but you didn't mention the nib size on the sliver one. The thing that actually turns me off on these pens, is not that they are retractable, but that the clip is on the wrong end! I really don't see why it's not possible to put the clip on that piece right by the clicker, like 99.9999% of all other pens, including, (can't believe I'm even using this word!) ballpoints. I might be interested in that silver one though, for the right price!

    • @Doodlebud
      @Doodlebud  ปีที่แล้ว

      All the pens come in XF point which is the same as a Japanese F. The clip is where it is so that the nib is upright when its in a shirt/jacket pocket. If the clip was on the other end, the pen would leak into your pocket because the nib would be pointed down.

    • @JefferyHall-ct2tr
      @JefferyHall-ct2tr ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, I realized that after I pushed comment! Something really slick would be a RETRACTABLE clip! that way it would not be in the way of your fingers while writing! Or put the clip on the back side maybe? That way the ink wouldn't run out.

    I don't like the majohn a1. The nib is to dry and small for me, but they only offer it in EF. Also after clicking it for 3 times I always have Ink stuck on the nib that accumulates under the trap door. I have two and both do that. Silicone grease on the back of the nib did not help. I love the concept of the vanishing point, but I can only advice you not to buy a majohn. For me they sadly do not deliver. Maybe I have to fork out the money for an original Pilot VP...

    • @Doodlebud
      @Doodlebud  ปีที่แล้ว

      More nib sizes would be better. The ink getting on the nib is just part of the deal with a clicking pen that rapidly sloshes the ink in the pen. I have the same thing happen on my real Pilot VP.

    • @DemonZapan
      @DemonZapan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Doodlebud After watching this video I decided to give the A1 another chance. And low and behold, I was wrong with my assessment... Using the refillable cartridge instead of the converter I had no Ink leak between nib and trapdoor so far. It seams the Converter is maybe not a hundred percent airthight and allows Ink to flow out, or the angle of the insert is different thus the nib grinds on the door... etc. Anyway, use the refillable cartridge and not the converter. :) Also I switched from a pigment Ink to a die ink from Diamine. Whith the wetter flowing Ink the Nib is now much smoother and nicer to write with. Seems If you know the quirks of the Pen it is a blast to use after all...! Thanks for the Vid anyway, might not have tried it again if it werent for it :)

I just don't get the praise - copy someone else's work, only change the construction in a way that makes it slightly worse, write worse, machine it the wrong way so you leave behind machining marks and no two engraved lines are precisely the same, paint job is quite bad...so what's the point of this product? Outside of the homeless, who have no need for a fountain pen, there is nobody who can't eventually save up the extra $120 for the proper item when it is an item that lasts a lifetime.
