    I am so glad he brought the suicidal thoughts back up at the end. I had totally forgotten about it! Glad we're able to write down notes during interviews!

    I really enjoyed the role play. I feel like I have a much better understanding of how a clinical interview is supposed to go after seeing this. I really appreciate Dr. Grande's smooth transitions and how comfortable he is with asking questions.

    This video was very helpful in learning how to have the intake interview come to an end. I like that they talked about the clients strengths. I think it allowed the interview to end on a more positive note.

    This was an excellent role-play session between counselor and the client. The questions asked were helpful to gaining insight into the client's story, past struggles, along with positive ambitions to becoming a better person. While every case and client can present different scenarios, this provides significant information, which can provide an in-depth understanding of mental health topics. Well done, Dr. Grande.

    I think the standout part for me was the contract for safety. I remember learning about this strategy in one of our tools classes from Dr. Rhoades when we learned about suicidality. It was an important part of his client's overall safety net to make sure she did not fall through the cracks.

    I like how Dr. Grande goes back to the suicidal thoughts that she mentioned in the beginning of the interview. As a first-timer, I would probably forget to go back! When he made a "contract for safety" with her, it made me think of the Tools class we had and the suicide crisis lesson. I also liked how Dr. Grande says that calling 911 or going to an inpatient facility seems like "extreme" measures, but that losing her life is more extreme.
    Great closure from his part and I hope to develop skills that will help me be as effective. I didn't think this series was "dry" as I had heard.
    Thought this 3-video series was extremely helpful and I will certainly watch them again to become more familiar with structure and how to word the questions and transitions in a smooth way.

    i like how all the previous posts culminated with this video and dr G really attended well and remembered previous disclosures in order to rely on them and summarize the session and come back to the important area of contacting for safety. I like how the video ends on a positive note and really sets the tone for future sessions

    I really like how this was broken up into 3 different parts because it was easier for me to understand how to handle the different parts of the intake interview without feeling overwelmed. Even though it was small what I liked was the part where the client stated that her sisters thought she was funny, and Dr. Grande asked if she believed she was funny. To which the client thought and stated she did, but not anymore. I thought that was a big thing that Dr. Grande picked up on the fact that the client was down on herself dispite recieving outside praise. I think that would be something I bring up during counseling.

    I really like the way he ends the session being encouraging and offers her "hope" that they will be able to figure things out while not minimizing her pain. He also gives her positive feedback for coming in and seeking help.

      I agree, especially after the difficult topic of suicide and contracting for safety, i think it was great he ended on a positive note and instilled hope in the power of counseling, especially if she had a bad experience with counseling before (as in this example_.

    I think my favorite part of this session was that he spent some time talking about her strengths. After so much time talking about her past, her presenting issues, it was nice to focus on the positive. I also liked that he did not let her leave until they had a conversation about suicidal ideation. He left her with some hope that therapy could be effective for her.

      +Mandy Moore I also found this to be a great part of the video, as it was nice to see the installation of hope after the client has been discussing difficult topics and emotions.

      +Mandy Moore I also liked the strengths part! It seemed like an opportunity for them both to come up for some air after having talked about problematic things in her life and history. It made me wonder though... if a client doesn't believe they have any strengths how a counselor might handle that effectively yet efficiently...

      @CandyKaneLane 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mandy Moore I also was glad he focused on her strengths and positives in this video as clients can tend to be rather hard on themselves so it is important to help bring them back up.

    This was a great demonstration of discussing topics such as religion and spirituality as well as suicidal ideation. This video was informational in the aspect of how to discuss such topics with ease and not in a judgemental way. As I am preparing to start my practicum and internship, I found this video to be helpful in how to successfully close out an intake form by also highlighting the client's strengths instead of focusing on negative aspects of what the client believes of themselves.

  • @kimberlykelly386

    I really liked the way Dr. Grande wrapped up the session. It was helpful to see a counselor and client discuss suicidal ideation because it's such a serious topic that intimidates me as a soon-to-be new counselor in the field. I want to make sure I handle situations like these correctly so it's nice to not only talk about it, but see it in action. I also like how he didn't make any promises yet gave her reason to hope that things will get better for her.

    You see the importance of support systems, resiliency and what the client values which will be vital as she continues with therapy. I like how he explained what to expect in future sessions and elicited some goals to focus on in future sessions. I also liked that he had her talk about her strengths.

      +Regina Ames Yes, I don't think the importance of support systems can be stressed enough. I think that those supports are extremely valuable as part of therapy. I also love how he spend some time talking about her strengths.

    I liked how the video showed how the client's change in daily activities could be related to her mood, decreased energy. Her decrease in energy could be connected to her difficulties at work. These questions regarding career and "fun" activities can prompt the client to discuss changes and how it is affecting her current situation. I appreciate asking the client what her strengths and goals are. This provides insight on how client views herself and what believes she needs help with. Overall great video.

      +Michelle Robinson Right, it really unfolded and Dr. Grande kept it focused but got a lot of information, too. It's a good preview of what the client might be working on but, I'm glad to see, it didn't lead to an immediate diagnosis.

      +Michelle Robinson I also liked this part of the interview because it allowed Anne to give her personal input and more of her personality showed through. I can see how helpful this information would be for the counselor to utilize in sessions with Anne.

    Great video! Overall a great completion to the series. Loved the explanation of the clinical nature of the intake meeting. I also liked how Grande ended it with a positive note stating that he has hope for the decrease in symptoms in future sessions.

      Yes, I think this series gave me a good idea of how an clinical intake interview is and how to do it effectively. I can see how the process can be "dry", but I think Dr. Grande does a great job in being caring and attentive at the same time as he asks all those questions. I am happy with this series because it has taught me quite a bit!

    I liked seeing how the therapist can walk though determining suicide risk. He asked about how strong the feelings and thoughts were and developed a plan if they got stronger. That's something I'm concerned about for the practicum and internship being able to do. The other part of the video that stood out was the part when he asked about other important people in her life; developing a list of resources and supports.

    • @thecorgisquad9861
      @thecorgisquad9861 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alicia Zahn It was great for him to draw up a list of her support network; this is huge for someone who is considering suicide! I also appreciated how he delicately, but deliberately explored her thoughts on suicide and whether or not she had a plan.

    This video demonstrated how to successfully instill hope at the end of an interview, which I find to be a significant element of the therapeutic process. This certainly stuck out to me in this video and is something I will keep in mind as I begin my profession in this field.

      +Jacklin Skibicki Intillation of hope is very important in therapy. I think that this is the most important part of the interview and what would make the client to come back to see you.

    I really appreciate this series. Do you use formal assessments, (for the trauma, substance/gambling, and suicidal questions)? Do you have any favorites? In particular for safety? Thank you for these videos and I look forward to viewing more.

    This part of the interview provides great detail about the client's support system, who she seeks to talk to in crisis, and her spiritual foundation. It concludes the whole person concept development. Again, it is just a basic overview of all aspects and provides great insight into the client's past and present situation. I liked how one question asked what she liked the best about her career path. This showed that her lack of energy carries over from not only her home life, but her career. The legal question gives the client an opportunity to close the loop on the situation and to see if it would be something that would need to be discussed in future sessions. I like that the client is given a chance to state her goals and objectives. This gives her a purpose for her treatment plan. It also gives her ownership. Having a contract for safety in place was a great way to end the intake session. Dr. Grande's explanation of the purpose provided the client an opportunity to establish a plan vocally. His encouragement of her plan and to call 911 shows the reality of this possibly happening to a client.

      +Bethany Elstrom All this information does provide insight into client's past and how it may have affected their current situation. Some of this information will be more relevant for some and not so much for others.

      Natural supports are important for the client. In my job we have the clients fill out a relationship map, that points out their supports.

    What stood out the most for me during the last part of the intake interview was how the topic of suicide was addressed. When the topic was first brought up during the first part of the intake, I had a feeling that the client had some more to say about it because she had asked follow-up questions and wanted to be sure of what would happen to her if she were to disclose that she has suicidal ideations. I like how this was left for the end of the interview, I am assuming this was intentional so that if there was a need for immediate action, there would be time to address that issue without holding up the intake interview.

    I found this video very interesting. The client seemed to be overwhelmed with her everyday life and seemed to mention her concerns a few times. But Dr. Grande was patient with the client and allowed her to vent and tell her story. I also liked the instillation of hope component where you could readily see the client's affect lift compared to the beginning of the intake.

    This is a good video, it makes sense why this portion is longer. More is revealed in this stage because information being shared is current and what is being revealed usually correlates with why a person is seeking counseling. So everything that was gathered from the beginning is put together. Information revealed earlier can be further elaborated on in this stage. Like when Dr. G asked Ann to provide more detail about her drug arrest in college. Everything gathered in this stage will be used to formulate a treatment plan that suits the client.

    • @alexisklair3164
      @alexisklair3164 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like how this video kinda of brings everything together. i think that all this information is the basis of the treatment plan as you said. He did a great job about attending to her through the entire process so that he could recall those details in this session. There is so much to remember but i think these series are a great outline/structure to follow for that first session.

    Establishing every client being different from the beginning of the interview allows the clinician to be open to changes that may need to be made. This will help us better serve the client. The cookie-cutter interview will not work.
