    The problem is that Volkswagen missed the point with the Beetle when they turned it into a luxury car. What made the original Beetle a success ? It was cheap. It was a car for everyone, no frills, funky car. What does Volkswagen do ? Remake it into a bulky luxury item ? Similar mistakes have been made with the Mini (Midi) but somehow that seems to sell well. As a general rule when you remake something coping is not enough, you need to understand the appeal of the original, fully. The thing is also Volkswagen has changed too, no longer are they the poor people car manufacturer, they moved upmarket. I guess they should let Skoda make the funky cheap car for everyone with a quirky design for the 21st century. What hasn’t changed is the allure of such a car today. Plenty of people are looking for that and it’s up to designers and smart people to have the vision to give young drivers what they want.

      Good question! My wife has wanted the convertible version for decades,and we finally got one. Absolutely loves it, as do countless folks who talk with her in parking lots, etc.. We had a 1969, so I certainly don’t long for the old air-cooled version, w/terrible heat/defrost, & no AC. When someone like this guy says it’s not for him, it simply reinforces that we made a good decision.

    I love how all these things you're pointing out as "standard" or "nothing special" is like amazing to me. My 2010 Subaru only had a CD player and a radio. No CarPlay, no rearview camera, no sensors, no aux port/USB, no sunroof, no button to start/stop engine, no accent colors or lighting, and shitty speakers. Obviously this is not a Tesla, but it's all relative I guess. I personally love ANY car that looks physically different then every car out there. Every car looks the same with the exception of the Delorean, Tesla, Smart4Two, and a VW Beetle (in my opinion).

    I have the 2017 turbo beetle and it’s pretty similar to this one except for a few minor differences. I get what you say about the car not being “smart” enough for the new generation but I think that’s kind of like the point with beetles. Like you said, maybe in the future we’ll see a revamped electric version. Great review btw!

      I kind of agree with Maria, I don't need all the tech stuff in my car. My Beetle is a 2013, and I love it. For me it's not that important and too much distraction on the road. I want a CD player, comfort,and reliability. The Fender audio system is awesome and I can play my CD'S!!!

  • @wickedbee486
    @wickedbee486 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I disagree strongly. it’s an amazing little car. there’s cars out there even smaller than the beetle. it’s not a super expensive car so of course it’s not going to have amazing tech features. the gas mileage is amazing, and if you have a TDi one it’s even better. I think this review was very opinionated and one sided. it’s an awesome car and everyone knows it when they see it

    • @BachmanVolkswagenLouisville
      @BachmanVolkswagenLouisville  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everyone is definitely entitled to their own opinion...so I respect your side. I think my point was more that for the price you pay which I’d argue is not cheap given the size of the vehicle and the feature set, you aren’t getting much of anything special except for an iconic body style... and if that’s what people want to pay for then go for it. Although it is worth noting that they discontinued it for a reason (Future EV IMO)... but they hardly ever stopping making a car that they can’t make enough of because people love it so much 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks for checking out the video!

    Glove compartment...turn your phone on its side...and you can put 6 of them in there... use your brain.... who needs all that tech in a car....your there to drive the thing...not play games... I like the simplicity... doesn't look like a modern car??? All of them all look the same now...hard to tell a honda from an bmw or audi nowadays... Why didn't you test drive the car? That's the most important part... come on...your better than that...

  • @fredglave8864
    @fredglave8864 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    He's right about the lack of tech and it being stuck in a different time, however that doesn't make it a bad car. He obviously prefers a more futuristic high tech design, and that's not a wrong opinion, he just sounds and looks bitter about it. Remember what the original Beetle was. It was a very inexpensive car that was easy to fix yourself. Great on gas in it's time at about 30 mpg. Spartan would be a good description of the original Beetle. What I really want to know about is how dependable it is and does it have a sound mechanical design.

    • @BachmanVolkswagenLouisville
      @BachmanVolkswagenLouisville  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely not bitter about it! It just boils down what you get for the cost you pay.... you are not getting very much car or tech for a pretty steep price. Clearly it wasn't working for VW either since they stopped production. Maybe electric soon?!

    • @velvetrooster5569
      @velvetrooster5569 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to disagree with you there. This car has a back up camera with parking sensors. It’s got a radio that can’t have navigation if you get the specific right radio or trim level that comes with the right radio but this particular car in this video has CarPlay and android auto which means you can get on screen navigation very easily Just by plugging the charging cable of your phone into the USB port and into your phone. That’s a good bit of technology right there that my 2013 Beetle did not have. I had
      to buy a replacement radio because it came with the basic radio and add it. Nothing is that it’s very easy to buy an OEM Volkswagen radio with CarPlay which is what I did. You can get a specific trim levels that have less technology like no back up camera and no parking sensors and a basic radio instead of a CarPlay radio. You can also get a higher tier trim levels on the car that come with a CarPlay radio that even has built-in navigation which doesn’t really do anything if you’re just gonna use CarPlay because the GPS on your phone that can be used with CarPlay is always better than whatever built-in navigation comes with the car. Believe me I know this because I’ve used the built-in navigation on my mom‘s BMW because unfortunately that car did not have CarPlay or android auto. That’s specifically on the 2014 BMW X.3 with the highest level trim package that BMW offers on that car. I have a 2013 Beetle with an OEM CarPlay radio. But the BMW did have a back up camera and parking sensors in my 2013 Beetle currently does not but it will pretty soon.

    Yes more tech would probably make it more appealing to more people but would also make it less affordable. I think this is a perfect first car. I got this as my first car when I turned 16 and absolutely loved it, it had enough tech for me more than the cheaper Hondas and Chevy Cruzes my peers got. My dad liked that while it was affordable he knew that it's a reliable car capable of lasting for a long time. Unfortunately 2 and a half years later I was in a wreck that totaled it. However despite the exterior damage the car received I was completely unhurt. The car did i's job keeping me safe and I'm now looking for another beetle to buy because I love this car. While I may want an electric car with the tech equivalent of a Tesla later in life there is no way I can afford it right now. Which is why I think this car has a lot of value to the younger generation because it's more affordable yet still feels luxurious. I love the shape and style of this car and it is very easy to park because of it's small size. As far as leg room I'd say there isn't much difference from this car and a four door chevy cruze.

    I like the review format. Best review on this car yet. I’d recommend leaving out all your personal opinions. Not everyone cares about “tech” and if you are there is millions of after market tech that rivals anything any car company has. You sound like a bitter person who couldn’t afford a Tesla. Btw its kinda obvious that unique is not for you. Go join the masses while I go hang with the cool kids. Outie 5

    • @BachmanVolkswagenLouisville
      @BachmanVolkswagenLouisville  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback, and for checking out the video! I hear you about tech but the issue becomes that so much of the vehicle space now is dominated by tech, that’s the aspect of redesigns or updates that people are intrigued by. Sure there are people out there like yourself that may not be overly concerned with tech, but you are definitely the minority. Available tech % package price is the the only real differentiating factor between mid tier sedans or hatchs because they are kind of look the same.
      Maybe someday I can join your cool kids club! 😝

    There's lots of cars that are impractical. The reason why VW pulled the plug on the original Beetle in the 70's is because they made a practical replacement in the Golf. Was the Golf as cool as the Beetle? Hell no. I have a Golf Mk7, that is very practical.....Is it as cool as the 3rd generation Beetle? Of course not. The young man reviewing the 2019 model completely missed the point. VW could've made this Beetle forever with a facelift every two years if they really wanted to. That's how the classic Beetle survived all those years.

  • @speedbird1598
    @speedbird1598 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I haven't seen the current year of Beetles, but the shape of the New Beetle is the thing I like best about the car. Most cars that size feel claustrophobic and suffocating, but the bubble top makes it feel roomy.

    What the old Beetles lacked in technology, they made up for with styling and design (e.g. chrome fittings, curvature in the body work, bumpers broke up the round shape, flat windshield looks best, running boards (used to brace the front and back fenders). The new Beetle was excessively boring...........they should have maintained the rear engine because that's what made the car cool (e.g. as in hip...no pun intended)......Porsche still has the rear engine design, the new Beetle should have kept that design. Plus the old Beetles were known for being cheap, good on gas and reliable due to the simplicity of the engine........the new Beetle missed all points

    You have no idea what you are talking about that upper storage ben does not make the car impractical. Further they could add a wireless charging pad, power adjustable seat, parking assist and and electronic instrument gauge and the car probably still be would not sell. They were overpriced and unreliable cars. More importantly, the real reason of why they did not sell is opposite of what you are saying. The VW beetle was not true to its original heritage of being an cheap reliable vehicle with the engine in the rear that everyone could afford. Then of course the market changed and everyone switched to SUVs and crossovers which had some effect on how most cars are selling in the states. As far as the shape it's nothing wrong with that at all unless you are the type that do not like a unique looking cars and prefer to drive an SUV which is a box on wheels. You are just taliking about all that tech junk because you have nothing better to say! Again, you have no idea what you are talking about and this was a stupid review!

    I love my 2013 2.5L beetle I’m not really a big fan of the sunroof or moonroof whatever you wanna call it and I’m glad I don’t have one but I do love the look of the top glove box also known as the Beetle box which I do have. I also love my RCD330 radio head unit with CarPlay. I had to install that myself. I heard it’s an OEM part and it definitely looks like an OEM part and it works incredibly well. You don’t need built-in navigation because with CarPlay yeah I get built-in navigation essentially not actually but essentially it’s basically the same thing and it works really well. Same goes for Android Auto.

    VW could have made it six inches longer and add that to the back seat so adults could sit back there comfortably with rear swing out suicide doors to ease getting in and out of the car. I think it does have some practicality cause its a hatchback with room for large items and not some puny little trunk with a spare tire and no room. I agree with the comments it should have been no frills, just the basics, to keep the cost down an make it the peoples car once again.

    As an owner of a 67 VW, I respectfully disagree with the impractical label on 2019. At least it's not impractical my wife and I. For old baby boomers this car is great. We don't care that much for the extra electronic gizmos: smart phones, parking aids, etc. I bought a 2019 for my wife and she loves it. Great car. It gets great gas mileage and can pass a car a lot better than my 67 ever could. I will agree that this car is meant for only two people and maybe a dog.

    New Beetles:
    ‘03 5spd., ‘05 turbo auto.

    Practically rebuild it the darn thing.
    I’ve a got a rap sheet on this beetle as long as my arm, from the previous owner.
    The quality lacked on the New Beetle; plastic parts, wiring problems, interior failures....etc.
    Quality control in the Plants in Mexico was awful!
    But I love the concept and decided to purchase my last New Beetle this year.
    I agreed the 2019 Beetle lacks tech big time.
    And I agreed, VW will bring back the Beetle as an EV,
    Thanks for reading and thanks for the great video!!!
