  • The all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 is a masterpiece. Smaller and lighter than its predecessor, this MK4 sports car retains all of the fun driving characteristics of the original MK1. We have road tested the 1.5 litre variant of this car, but now is the turn of the 2.0 litre with 158BHP. 0-62MPH takes 7.3 seconds. All 2 litre ND cars come fitted with a limited slip differential as standard.

      +Paul You are very welcome. If all goes to plan (hope I didn't just jinx it) the Car of the Year semi-finals will be out tomorrow which will see the new MX-5 take on the Mini JCW. The overall winner of Inside Lane Car of the Year 2015 will be announced, and have its own video feature, on Friday.

    Very nice video great work, just one note, maybe you should merge the stereo channels on the audio, it's a bit jarring when you turn and speak to the camera.

      +Nicolai Frost -Jensen Johansen Thanks very much! Glad you liked it. We will look into the audio.

      +Blake Swan Thank you very much! Erm... That is a tough one. Right now for what I need my personal a car for (mainly a toy) I'm happy with my MK1. If I needed one to a daily driver I think the new MK4 as it offers plenty of fun without starting to worry about it being a classic.

      Makes complete sense. Really love what they did on this new generation. The video shoots in this are amazing. Keep up the great work.

    Did you film the MK1 in the new forest?
    I'd swear the last few images were from Ringwood.
    Something about driving them roads in my MK1 burned them into my noggin.

      Good spot, all shot in the New Forest

    It's not its great great grandfather ;) NA is a great-grandfather to the ND, in between you have father (NC) and Grandfather (NB) :)
    Otherwise, nice job, great car, good info, some more regarding lugage space would be nice, as that is probably the only thing where they came short in comparison with other 3 gens. No glove compartment (but 2 compartments behind seats, yes?) and as far as I can see no spare tire and still less trunk volume than an NB.. (130vs145L)

    I have driven British roadsters like the Midget, MGB and Spitfire - so how would you compare the MX-5 with that era?

    • @insidelane
      @insidelane  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm guessing we are talking about the MK1 MX-5? Well, as much as I love British roadsters, the MX-5 is so successful because it did what it set out to do. It delivers true driver engagement whilst offering the reliability that the classic British cars simply could not at a very reasonable price. It's easy to work on, cheap to fix if something needs replacing, but also has character meaning it's just as lovable as the MG's and Triumph. It has a good origin story too.

      Inside Lane Hit the nail on the head with the reliability reference. We all remember the days of "The Prince of Darkness!"

    Shame it wasn't the Sport with the stiffer suspension and anti-roll bars for comparison. Would love to see the real difference the chassis tweaks make above the engine.
    I drove the 1.5 and it was waaay too roly-poly for me :/

      Just get stiffer lowering springs easy cheap fix to stop rolling

    I honestly excepted to have more power as the honda s2000 is 11 years old and has a 2.0l without any forced induction

    • @insidelane
      @insidelane  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Honda lover True, but it does weight very little. MX-5 has always been about the handling. I'm sure many people will end up turning their MX-5 so it is ideal for them.

    • @oemasian9617
      @oemasian9617 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Inside Lane yes i 100% agree with you, but i excepted a little bit more just because people saw the s2000 as a competitor against the mx-5 in 1999 so thats why i excepted a little bit more ;)

    Why do British reviews report 0-62 in 7.2, but US reviews report 0-60 in 5.8? Surely that extra 2 mph can't add 1.4 seconds.

    • @insidelane
      @insidelane  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jonathan Hatfield Good question! Well, the figure we quote is what the manufacturer says the car will do but this number is often on the safe side to ensure that ever car that leaves the factory can achieve it. Some outlets then time the car themselves to see how fast they can make it go. On top of that we do to 62 which is 100kph. I think there might be a gear change there as well.

    • @Kylo_Ren_2033

    • @insidelane

      Depends what you want from the car. 1.5 is very pure.

      +Inside Lane sorry I mean sporty suspension and dynamics. Thanks for a nice review. I would if you could do more comparison reviews. Like c63 vs c63s is it worth the extra money etc.. Like you did for MX5

      of which one is power, it's not everything granted... but is still important, especially for a sports car. This car was too lacking in that department and it unfortunately killed it for me.
