Swifts have returned to their nest box in London, UK after their migration from sub-Saharan Africa. These incredible birds return to the same nest site each year and this is their fourth successive year using this box.
Swifts are summer migrants to the UK, returning each year to breed. They spend the Winter in sub-Saharan Africa before embarking on a monuments journey to the same nesting site. Swifts have one of the longest migration journeys of 14,000 miles (22,000 kilometres).
Nest Box Live have had cameras on this box for the past two years, and on both occasions, Swifts have bred successfully. This project is in conjunction with the Friends of Wandswoark Park Swift Conservation Project.
Last year, the first egg was laid on 17th May, so we are not far off from seeing the first egg.
Timeline:
7th May - Swifts Returned
28th May - 1st Egg Laid
30th May. - 2nd Egg Laid
2nd June - Both Eggs Discarded
11th June - 3rd Egg Laid
13th June - 4th Egg Laid (Currently 2 in nest)
3rd July - 1st Egg Hatched
