  • This is a car that is highly desired by many and one I have wanted for years myself but due to timing and the need for other vehicles in my life was never able to justify getting one until now. I'm very excited to show this car and I really hope you enjoy this car as much as I do. Thanks for watching!

    I got a second chance at getting one of these back in the day. I had a low to mid 20,000 budget and that wasn’t going to get a new one. In ‘92, I ordered a new Maxima SE. it wasn’t a great economy back then so there were no loaded ones on the lot. In that 3 months it took to get a loaded maxima SE delivered, someone offered me a ‘91 LS sedan with a 5 speed that fit my budget with 14k miles on it. I passed on it. 2 years later after not digging the maxima, there was a ‘92 LS sedan with a 5 speed on an Acura dealer lot with 13k on it. I grabbed it. Kept it 2 years and had the pleasure of putting 32,000 miles on it during that time. One of my prior cars was a Saab 900 Turbo. Loved that it also had a longitudinally mounted engine. My Saab wasn’t a particularly reliable vehicle and the costs to fix it were crazy. The opportunity to have a reliable Acura with that same balance that a longitudinal engine offers was a dream come true.

    • @beb1527
      @beb1527 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lollol-xp4mc Many people tell me that. I just didn't like the '92 Max SE. The valves were making noise at 40K and dealer wouldn't fix under 5yr/60K warranty. A year after I sold it, I got a recall notice for it. I likely hit the problem before others, b/c I put 40K miles on it in 2 years. I test drove the Acura on a curvy road - it it communicated with the driver much better than the Max did, as it should given the price difference.

    • @TorquilMcLeod
      @TorquilMcLeod 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Beb152 I too am surprised you didn't like the Maxima but appreciate the valve problem and that a loaded Legend had more luxury features than a fully loaded Maxima so was probably nicer inside. I had a 92 Maxima SE 5 speed that I bought used in 2004, had it for 7.5 years, I thought it was felt lighter and more direct feeling than both the 91 Legend coupe 5 speed and 95 Legend Coupe 6 speeds that I tested, but those differences could have come down to tires and the condition of the cars being used. The Maxima had good torque off the line then it would really come on cam at about 4000 rpm from the variable intake and valve timing, and the limited slip differential kept the torque steer in check and good traction in the rain and snow. The valve noise was in the variable valve timing sprocket and spring assembly, which was hydraulically actuated and prone to making noise if the oil passages clogged, from start up wear from using a cheap oil filter without an anti drain back valve, or just age if the spring was weak. The warranty replacement would have been replacing the cam assembly with a new version of the same thing which would have started making noise again.

    • @beb1527
      @beb1527 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TorquilMcLeod my maxima was an automatic and had I ordered the 5 speed, I might have kept it longer. The Acura seemed to handle as well, yet had a better ride. The automatics weren’t as quick off the line. When it hit 4K rpms at full throttle as you mentioned, it was an incredible rush. I drove the maxima in an ice storm and found myself the only one who got to work that day. The limited slip was amazing in anything winter threw at it. I did not like the black dashboard, for an inexplicable reason, it just bothered me. Also couldn’t wait to get rid of the automatic seatbelts.

    • @TorquilMcLeod
      @TorquilMcLeod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beb1527 It was good in snow. I'm in Canada on the west coast so while we don't get much snow what we do get is wet and they don't plow very well. I drove in the mountains for skiing and to go home at Christmas in snow and it always felt balanced with good traction. I got 16" wheels from a 98 and put 225 55 16 tires which rode nice and gripped well in the corners. I replaced the air box with a cone filter and took out the resonator (the stuff you do in your 20s) and it made a nice intake sound especially in the higher revs. Canadian cars didn't have power seat belts which was nice. It was black on black so I never minded the black dash because everything was black but could see it being weird with other colours. Here are pics:

    I have a 1993 Acura Legend LS 6 speed manual black on black. Yes they are RARE and HARD to find in decent condition. The two door coupe with the Type II engine was offered from 1993 - 1995. The four door GS sedan with the 6 speed manual was only offered in 1994 and 1995. They are fewer of them simply because most sedan owners opted for the 4 speed automatic. However the number of sedans FAR exceeds the number of coupes. It would be interesting to know from Acura what the total numbers of produced 6 speed manuals were in both two door and four door variants. I see one of the MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE Acura Legend owners has previously commented and perhaps he can get that information.
    I also owned a 1992 Nissan Maxima SE black on black MANY years ago. The Maxima was FAST and well balanced. I had no problems with it but unfortunately it had an untimely ending well before its time. The Acura however had a higher price point for a reason and years later I'm still enjoying TWO Acura Legends!

    That’s a great car, thanks for sharing. I looked buying a 95 coupe with the Type II and 6 speed back in 2004, but I was in my last year of university and would have been a financial stretch.
    While 230 hp seems low today, the car only weighs 3500 lbs which is lower than most modern cars especially in that class i.e. the 2010 TL weighs over 3900 lbs. The longitudinal engine mount has nothing to do with engine power delivery and shouldn’t be noticeable, it’s probably just the difference in the engine power band, the gearing, or the feel of the throttle since it’s a mechanical linkage. The differences are for packaging and handling, as transverse mounted front wheel drive cars have the transmission and differential offset from the engine, so the axle shafts are of unequal length which increases torque steer, the drivetrain mass is further forward in the chassis, and wheels are further back in the chassis. Longitudinal front wheel drive, the transmission is mounted behind the engine, moving the mass further back in the chassis, the driveshaft goes forward from the transmission to the differential which is centrally mounted allowing for more equal length axle shafts and for the front wheels to be further forward in the chassis. This makes for more even weight distribution, reduces torque steer, and improves handling to give the car more of a rear wheel drive feel.
