  • In this video, we will be discussing the popular 1991-1995 Acura Legend. The new second-gen Acura Legend hit the showrooms in October 1990, being powered by a 200 hp SOHC engine.
    The new Acura Legend had an engine which was larger than its predecessor, displacing 3.2 liters over the previous 2.7. The stick shift remained, and also there was a 4-speed automatic. For the 1991-1995 model years, the second-generation Acura Legend had beautiful styling.
    The new second generation Acura Legend had a significant increase in size over its predecessor. The overall styling of the new Legend sedan was inspired by the previous generation Legend coupe. Honda also wanted the Legend coupe and sedan to have somewhat of a family resemblance and styling cues with other Acura products. Hence, the Legend coupe shares the same mirrors as a contemporary NSX. Acura was dedicated to positioning the 1991-1995 Acura Legend further upmarket towards the LS and Q45.
    This video will go into detail about the 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995 Acura Legend coupe and sedan.

    The 1991 Legend coupe was a very nice car. It knew where straight ahead was and went there quickly. Loved it all the way down to the soft close doors. There was some engine coarseness on cold starts but boy was it smooth after warming up.

    One of the best! I remembered Ludacris getting his fully restored by Acura.

    Fantastic video. I'm a huge critic of a lot of videos on TH-cam, but this is amongst the best one. Well researched and reported.
    The second generation legend design indeed was decided on at the end of 1987 and early 1988, with gradual changes and sign offs.
    They needed roughly under 3 years to go from final design to showroom in late 1990, identical to the NSX which was making the same level of progress parallel to design of the second generation Legend KA7/8.
    You did forget to mention that the legend was notably the first Japanese car with an airbag in 1987, developed by Honda since 1975. Honda had actually developed both driver and passenger airbags as of 1987, but could not implement them in the existing dashboard without high cost unlikely steering wheel airbag.
    As soon as that driver's airbag was introduced in 1987, Honda decided to instead work on implementation for the upcoming redesign due in late 1990.
    In October 1990, the second generation Legend was the first Japanese automobile to boast a passenger airbag = dual airbags, as well as comprehensive offset crashtesting. That passenger airbag, being a rather very safe vertically deploying apparatus was design engineered to deploy away from the passenger upwards and not punch them in the face, like many early overpowered passenger airbag systems, which killed small adults and children by the mid-late 90s.
    Although BMW was alleged to have introduced a similar passenger airbag system in an updated E32 7-Series in West Germany in January 1990, it wasn't offered outside of Europe until mid-1992 during a late stage facelift (which added V8 for '93).
    The Legend also had one of the first in dash navigation systems on an LCD screen, in 1990. This was replaced by a full fledged system in 1995 on the 3rd generation.

    Digging your updated editing style Rob! Great vid and was cool to mention the Vigor. That thing kinda flopped. I didn't realize a Legend could be had with a 6 speed in the mid 90s!

      Yeah, it was pretty remarkable in 93. It was one of the first cars with one. The other cars available with a 6 speed at the time were serious sports cars. Think Corvette or 911.

    I owned a 1991 Legend L with a four-speed automatic. It was a fast car that loved to cruise at higher than legal highway speed. It handled well and had a sporty vibe. My biggest complaint was that it took 91-octane premium gas. Other than some minor niggles, it never gave me any trouble. A solid, well-built, high-quality vehicle.

    Thank you for producing this video. That was interesting to know the Legend sedan was considered full-sized and the coupe was considered midsized. The 1979-1985 GM E Bodies had a longitudinal mounted V8 and they were front wheel drive. This was really informative. I saw videos on You Tube of a Honda Legend sedan that was not offered in the United States, but was offered in other countries. The last sedan we got like this was Acura RLX.

    • @MotorMaster_Stunticon
      @MotorMaster_Stunticon  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed. It makes sense why they would market it as a full-size sedan since that’s primarily what it competed against from other luxury brands. Yep, the RLX was virtually a JDM Honda Legend.

    Considering the Acura legend was a personal luxury coupe, i'm surprised there was a manual option. Acura hasn't been the same in the last decade and a half.

    • @MotorMaster_Stunticon
      @MotorMaster_Stunticon  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No surprise here. It’s 90s Honda, so I could totally see them offering a manual in their ‘flagship’ car. Now had it been a different car brand, the manual probably wouldn’t have happened in a flagship car.

    Not a Honda / ac fan but I must admit the early 90s-2000s Acura had decent design language. Almost similar to Lexus es

    I have owned a 1995 Legend coupe automatic with only 84K since 2000. Still unwilling to sell it. Such a gorgeous vehicle. I find its design sleek and curvy in the right places. To me today's car designs look too squared, predictable, and over-the- top modern style. Wish Honda considered bringing Legend back with a similar design as 2nd generation, although I doubt that will happen.

      I love this car, but you're ignorant thus far. Not accurate whatsoever.
      Honda copied the Mercedes-Benz 190E and BMW 5-Series (E28) for both the 1986 Legend and 1986 Accord.
      When BMW revealed the E32 7 Series and E34 5 Series in 1986-87, Honda was designing the 1991 Legend and finalized the '91 Legend styling based on the E34 5-Series in early 1988.
      It's why when BMW redesigned the 5-Series for 1996, the E39 looked similar to the Legend.
      The '92 Mitsubishi Diamante design was finalized in 1987 and revealed in 1989.
      Mercedes-Benz owned that design language going back many years and W140 was finalized in 1986.
      Q45 design was a design development with origins in 1984-1985 per a design study and production body finalized by early 1987.
      You have no business commenting on any car design if you don't have an actual timeline of each model's development.
