What Happens When US Navy Sailors Have A Burial in the Middle Of The Sea

- An american aircraft carrier is on a mission for months with about 5,000 US US sailors on board. It is very vulnerable and therefore there is a high probability of someone dying on board. The famous flight deck where planes take off and land is also used for funeral ceremonies when someone dies on board. What happens when someone dies in the middle of the sea and why is the burial carried out at sea and not on land? US Navy Burial at sea.
In a scenario where the deceased has to be taken to land while the aircraft carrier is on deployment, the body is placed in a body bag and stored in a freezer known to sailors as a reefer. This storing procedure is to preserve the body until the deceased can be transferred to a morgue. The naval term for transferring a dead body to land is called Personnel Transfer. Unless the vessel is at war or engaged in a battle, the deceased can be Pers-Trans'd to a medical examiner in a couple of days. Otherwise, the body might be preserved for weeks, sometimes months. However, if there is no request to deliver the body to land, the sailor is buried at sea.
There is a standard procedure for a disposition at sea. Everyone attending the funeral must be appropriately dressed in the Uniform of the Day. The adjutant, also known as the Officer of the Deck, announces "All hands bury the dead'' to the members of the ship. If possible, the ship is brought to a stop. All colors of flags aboard the ship are then brought to half-mast. #aircraftcarrier #usnavy #burial

My Dad was in major sea battles in the Pacific theater during WW-2.He told me
men were dying so fast that he was the only one left that knew how to give a
burial at sea.He saw horrors and many of his friends die.He lived in nightmares
until the day he passed. RIP Dad I Love You
My Dad was buried at sea he was a corporal in the Army Air corps from WWW 2. He also worked with the naval air system command for almost 40 years. He was buried in the Gulf of Mexico off the deck of a destroyer. The ship filmed it and sent us a flag 21 shell casings and a ocean chart were it was performed . We also got a letter from the CO & chaplain of the ship. It was very dignified . Thank you for doing this video.

I was a "Tin Can Sailor", I had the Honor of Being involved with TWO of my Shipmates that have been given the Honors of a Burial at Sea. It Broke My Heart to See them Given to the Sea as they have Given THeir Lives to the US Navy. My dad was buried at sea. He retired from the Navy after 22 yrs. He was on carrier’s, however his burial took place on a Sub. We received a DVD of the service and a handwritten letter from the Captain of the boat and pictures. We also were give the exact coordinates where his ashes were spread. It was exactly what he wanted and deserved❤️🇺🇸

I was stationed on the USS Coral Sea, MarDet from 77-80. This was part of our job and we did quite a few in my 2 plus years. Very dignified way to say thank you for your service to a veteran who served our country. Semper Fidelis

My father was a USN officer for 36 years (WW2, Korea, Vietnam). His ashes were burried at sea. My mother, a US Marine during WW2, had her ashes buried at sea at the same location, when she died several years later.

As one my ships Navy Corpsman I had the honor to be a part of a burial at sea for a Army veteran in 1990, releasing and watching the casket slip away into the cold dark water was something that I will never forget.

I have also read a few stories of military members of an opposing force whom have died on board a U.S. ship. The military honors were given to them as well. Respect to an enemy is surely one of the greatest dignities I have heard of from U.S. forces. Kudos!
We even gave one of Americas most hated enemies a proper burial in line with his religious views. That was Osama Bin Laden who was buried at sea in accordance to his Islamic beliefs.

(They found the two dialysis machines the CIA gave him earlier.) From the Commander of the Delta Force in charge of the troops who found his dead abandoned body. Move on...nothing to see here...

I did burial detail on board of the USS Kitty Hawk during the mid 1980’s. It was a solemn time and we showed respect. I am honored to have participated.
I was on the Kitty Hawk (73-77) & coming out of drydock in Bremerton we were on our way back to San Diego. I was on lookout on the o-13 level & saw the chaplain & the family of the deceased standing on the port side. He did a short service & then attempted to pour the ashes overboard. Since we didn't do any burials at sea, the ship just kept going...at about 14 knots. He opened the box with the ashes & as he poured them out, the wind made a gigantic cloud over the chaplain in his dress whites. I could see him spitting, coughing & trying to wipe his eyes. I see now why they just dump the whole urn into the ocean.
@@frankgordon8829 I can see that happening, we usually lowered an elevator, I would use aircraft tie down chains to secure the chaplains small table, and do the ceremony. The Command Master Chief would toss the urns/containers of various descriptions over the side, unopened. It was usually windy, so if they tried to pour them we would all have gotten covered.

If a service member dies at sea, his/her remains will be stored in the morgue on board ship( if there is one) or the coolers, until the body can be either taken off the ship by helicopter or brought ashore. If the service member has chosen to be buried at sea, then the family would have to request that before the burial would take place at a later date.
We lost 3 great men during our 7 month deployment 1987/1988 med -cruise on the USS Coral Sea CV 43 , Did one burial at sea our lost f-18 and aviator Lt Joe ( REPO ) Mullany never recovered , RIP easy brothers we havent forgotten you !

My Dad was a WWII naval officer who took command of an LST (landing ship tank) at sea when he was 23 years old (battle field promotion) - Guam, Leyte, Green Island, Marianna invasion - his last mission was to steam to Tokyo for the invasion and on the way the bombs were dropped and it became a humanitarian mission. He survived all of that and died at 85, in 2008, after raising 8 children. The navy came to his funeral on Cape Cod, paid him honors with an honor guards and taps, guarded his coffin until it was lowered, then move to my mother and stood guard with her until she left,. It was one of the most moving scenes - my father was so proud of his service and the navy stood by him until the end - still choked up when I think about about it - go navy and their traditions!

A 5 Generation Navy Family here. My Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, 3 Uncles, 2 Cousins so far have all been buried at Sea. As will I and my 2 Brothers, my Daughter and my Son when the time comes.

Why, it's true, look up 22 a day. My dad served in Vietnam and is 73 yrs old and still denied VA benefits. Even after being injured by shrapnel to both legs he stayed on the front line but denied benefits till this day and with multiple health issues from agent orange. My grandfather died from lung cancer after serving on a Naval ship full of asbestos when the VA hospital told him he had they informed him there's nothing they could do. Now that I'm older and a nurse, I know that they could have treated it and he had a better chance of survival or atleast lived longer.

I think this is a very beautiful and respectable way of showing respect to the fallen soldiers and retired veterans...My dad was in the Marines and grandfather was in the Army and he fought in South Korea this made me think about him because although he was not buried at sea he was buried in the cemetery along with other fallen soldiers they did a 21 gun salute to show his gratitude for his service and presented my grandma with the flag and the location to where he is buried...This made me think about him...My gratitude goes to all those fallen soldiers and veterans for their service and to all those who are still servicing thank you
My 19 year old son is currently serving and this made me cry. I would not want him buried at sea. I never knew this but it would be his choice 😢

My dear friend, Tom, was buried at sea after died from a sudden heart attack in 2016. His dad was a high ranking retired Navy officer and they accommodated the burial. I still miss him everyday.

I've performed funeral honors while serving in the Navy. Felt great to honor the men and women who served before me. Never did it out to sea though. Being buried at sea is how I'd like to be laid to rest.

So, I'm an Army veteran and a lifelong military historian.
I knew quite a few customs of the Naval Service in regards to burial at sea. I was unaware of the advent of the weighted block to help start the formation of a new coral reef [which are sorely needed currently]. THAT is a nice touch.
When I depart for Fiddler's Green [I'm a cavalryman], I intend for my remains to treated with fertilizer to form the basis of a new tree at the edge my state's Veterans Cemetery, so the 'reef block' thing strikes a chord with me.
That block is used to start a new life a coral to grow on it and it's available to anyone who wants to be a part of that not only sailors.
Cavalryman? GAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY. Go screw your non-existent horse and after your spur ceremony on a chair is complete, take them and shove them up your you know what. - Infantryman
But I hope you will encounter Jesus our Lord and savior so that when all is said and done you may go rest in His arms forever

But this specific discussion is about my Earthly remains.
I **certainly** don't want to be buried just in a shroud, so that my remains can pollute the water supply. Cholera, dysentery, etc. from drinking fouled water is no joke, believe me. I've seen what it does. But I also think that being hermetically sealed for posterity is a bit... egotistical, I think. I have lived. It's enough that those who loved me remember me. And I'd rather continue to be part of the cycle of life, rather than separate myself from it.
I think the Lord, our Father, understands this and that He will send The Christ to retrieve me when the time comes.

I was a part of a burial detail while I was station at NAS Miramar in the early 90s. Our team performed burial detail every Friday and on average we would bury at least 4 to 6 people all over San Diego most were retired, but some were still active duty. I didn't want to do it at first, but then I found a whole new respect for my fellow servicemen very soon after.

My Dad is somewhere in the Tasman sea. He was not in the navy but was a seaman and wanted to be buried in the place he loved. He was old school and started his voyage on the seas back in 1936.

One thing that the Navy emphasizes on its web site is that retired sailors who are eligible for burial at sea will wait in port until a warship is available. Their burial will always be from a warship.

My dad was in world war 2 and after he died he was cremated and his ashes sat in a closet at the house for about 20 years. Then my mom died so I brought both their ashes here to Thailand where they now reside at a Buddhist temple even though they were not Buddhist.

My dad was a Navy veteran of the Korean war. He passed away in 1991 and was cremated. A month or two after my mother received the cremains my uncle, an Army WWII veteran, told my mom the Veteran's Affairs would make arrangements to bury my dad at sea if she requested it. She did and an officer picked up my dad's cremains about two months later. A short while passed and my mother received in the mail a nice package. Inside was an official letter from the Captain of the ship thanking my mom for allowing them to honor my dad in this way and included an official patch of the ship. The Chaplain of the ship sent her a very nice letter describing the entire service, seven of the spent casings from the salute, 8x10 pictures of the service along with the tri-folded American flag that was draped over his cremains during the ceremony. I have the flag, casings, patch and a smaller version of one of the pictures in a triangular display along with two medals my father received while in the service. The rest of the items are stored behind the box in a space just for that. I cherish these items and have the utmost respect for the Navy in providing this service.

I attended the funeral of a sailor who died in the Pearl Harbor attack.
He was aboard the Oklahoma, which had capsized.
His remains were identified through DNA after 80 years.
His funeral was conducted with a US Navy Honor Guard and it was as solemn and honorable as could be.
The sailor, 18 when he was killed in action, was buried next to his parents.

I love history and learning about the full process of things like this. My dad was US Army fighting in Korea in 51-52, at his funeral in 1995 I was holding up ok then they played TAPS that was when I lost it.
I have had two family members that served and passed away, my Dad and a brother. When TAPS started I fell apart, and again when the rifle salute was given. I have one more brother to which will have military honors, I know when TAPS starts I will be sobbing and again when the rifles go off during the gun salute. My poor sister will be there for my older brother, then later for me as 3 of us boys served in the military!!!

I remember doing this. I remember one time it was not the best day to do a burial at see so instead of being on the flight deck we did it from the hanger bay. I was in supply and I was always weirded out that we had coffins on board, but after a few mishaps I quickly understood why we needed them.

I'm a member of my MCLs Detachment's honor guard. We average performing ten to thirty veteran funerals a year. We have the capability of conducting the entire ceremony. However, usually we provide the firing detail, and a bugler for taps. The family usually has clergy for the religious rites, and the branch of service provides a detail to fold and present the flag.

We had several deaths on CVN68. Most HR were identified and transported back to land. There were some HR that were small and or unidentifiable (eg burned finger etc). We held a memorial service the day after. Very emotional. Was also asked to be part of the Honor Guard a few times. My uniform never looked better.

I have the honor of being part of burial at sea details on several occasions. Being on a submarine, all of the burials were with cremains. Seas would have to be pretty calm as we had little freeboard.

Wow, I did 4yrs onboard a Virginia class nuclear cruiser, never thought once about losing a shipmate, let alone a burial ceremony. Did Know you could be lost at sea, but this is a new perspective, salute to all the fallen warriors!

My old man was a WW2 Royal Navy vet.
His wish was to be buried at sea
My mum said she would put his ashes in the sea from Southend Pier.
He told her to bugger off as he didnt want to go in and out with the tide.
In the end I arranged for burial at sea from a Royal Navy vessel so he could be with his ship mates

My stepdad was a submariner, he wasn't buried at sea but he had the full military honors of a navy veteran, thank you to all who have served and who are still serving, God bless you all and your families 🇺🇸❤️🙏

My Dad passed away 2 weeks ago and Served in WW2, he was in the Army and died just short of his 99th Birthday, this past Monday May 8th he was buried with Military honors next to my Mom in the Cemetery. I being the only Son received his flag and will guard it with my life the way he defended Our Country. RIP to all the Soldiers who have defended Our Country and given their lives.
I think this is a great way to honor our service men and women. They deserve it.

My daddy was a navy man and was buried at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga TN. They gave him a 21 gun salute,presented my mother with an American flag,but what really got to me the most was when the buglar played Tapps.... It broke my heart to listen to those haunting notes float across that ocean of graves of fallen men... All respect ,honor and love to each and every one of our fallen warriors ... Thank all of you so very much and may you RIP ..

It should be noted however that burial at sea is not customary under normal circumstances - if you die on deployment, you're not by default going to be cast over the side, you'll be kept in the ship's morgue until you can be transported ashore and back home.
My favorite Navy Regulation has to do with at sea burial of casketed remains. Generally it says that in preparation for the burial the casket is to be opened and holes suitable to enable the entrance of water into the casket are to be drilled in the casket. Also weights are called for to be placed in the casket. Once closed again the casket should be ready for burial at sea. My most favorite line states that under NO circumstances is naval gunpower to be used to sink a casket. In seven and a half years of active service as a Chaplain, I never officiated at the commitment of casketed remains; but most of the interments I participated in were from the deck or sail of submarines where we used the weights used to sink ships' garbage to ensure the sinking of the cremains' container.

I have seen this. It was so quiet. Outside of a prayer on the Flight Deck at Easter time, you could hear a pin drop. In Vietnam a fighter pilot's bones were found and for that it was sent to the depths of the carrier. It's haunting. The casket then sent over the shoot. We never forget the fallen or our respect for the dead.
A couple of my grandpas served in the military and I didn’t get to see one of them before he died, but the other one I was able to a few times. Their names were Ronald burden and Paul Coen.

Es muss ja aus verrottbarem Material sein. As a veteran, l have considered being buried at sea, or on shore. But if l did, I would make it a last request that NO females participate in it.

This man's armed forces and navy have been infected with, and RUINED as a result of letting those damn "waves" (what they are & what they STILL are) into combat. I would rather have my remains deposited into a landfill, or dumped into the sewer as opposed to being buried with ANY of them taking part in a sea burial service. I know l speak for more than myself in that there is no greater, no deeper insult than to be "dismissed with final honors" by an honors detail that includes women. Is that Sexist ? Maybe. Either way, I don't give a 💩.

Someone had a really bad childhood
I served with the 92d Security Police Squadron in 1977 to 1982. We had an airman die from a single car accident. I was asked as a Sergeant to write a letter to his parents as I was his supervisor. It was the hardest thing I have ever done, I cried while typing the letter. Then I also had to inform his best friend that Steve was gone. This shook the entire squadron as we had to deal with it. Steve was loaded on board a C-141 for the trip home to his family. We were standing guard mount as the C-141 began his take off roll. The aircraft was coming down the runway as our Flight Chief called us to attention. We were all armed and ready for duty. The day shift flight chiefs told us his flight would stay on post until we had paid our proper respects and were able to get control of our emotions. We stood there at attention when the flight chief ordered present arms which is in lieu of a standard military salute because we were under arms. The C-141 broke from the runway right in front of us, every man started crying while still at attention as Steve was headed home the final time. An Air Force photographer was on board the C-141 and took a picture of us standing at attention while the aircraft left the runway, even he was crying. It was a very honorable display of love that we had for Steve. The photographer gave a copy of that photo to the parents along with my letter on Air Force letter head thanking them for the service their son gave to his nation, I am 65 and still remember this like it was yesterday, Rest in Peace Steve!!! Steve's best friend asked for permission to escort Steve home to his parents and the Commander authorized non charged leave at Air Force expense and Fairchild AFB flew our flags at half staff!!!

My dad’s youngest brother was buried at sea, during his deployment in the Pacific theater (delivering parts of the atomic bomb destined for Nagasaki). Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful ceremony, which has brought me a far greater understanding of how Uncle Charles was buried, and the ability to finally grieve an uncle who I never was able to get to know.

An uncle passed away about 10 years ago.
He survived the Pearl Harbor attack, a crewman in the USS Phoenix.
While at the gravesite waiting for his service to begin, the Navy Honor Guard appeared from what seemed out of nowhere..
To this day I don't know who contacted them.
They just showed up, did their thing and split.
Watching them "perform" was on the coolest thing I ever witnessed.

I served in the Navy for a few years. Seen a few burial at sea ceremonies. It was always a small box with the deceased ashes, never a full size casket.
One of my family members was brought back to land and buried at a cemetery he died before I was born. His name is Robert Bol and to this day hes still with us hes actually one who protects us in spirit and every memorial day we go to the cemetery for the service that honors all the veterans buried there.
My sons friends grandfather was in the Korean War aboard a Gearing Class Destroyer (USS Norris DDE-859) and he is still alive. He and his wife are 90/94 respectively. His daughter has though of having him buried at our naval base here in Pensacola and his wife as well, but the wife is older than him, so it’s undecided right now.

I'm a chaplain working with the Navy and I have witnessed this Naval traditional burial ceremony in the water. It's nice.

No matter what the orders, or the odds of success. “Ours is not to reason why; ours is but to do and die.”
To all those who died in service, or died after giving service, your work and dedication is remembered by those left behind. We live safe and we live free. God Bless America and the hero’s who have served her.
