  • In this video, I examine the secular humanist movement of the 15th century. I focus on the ideas and works of Leonardo Bruni, Leon Battista Alberti, and Niccolo Machiavelli.

Secular humanism is a system of morality dependant on independent thought, scepticism, and rationality. It has changed a great deal over time, as it is not locked into a specific set of religious virtues or a book of unchanging dogma. In fact secular humanist is stronger than ever.

Why are you referring to secular humanism in the past tense? It continues today.

The Machiavelli’s shift to political realities instead of moral questions was followed in the International Relations by Cardinal Richelieu.

Herodotus is considered to be the father of history, not Thucydides. While both writing at a similar time, Herodotus definitely came first.

If this movement took place during the renaissance in 1400s, human being seems to have already moved away from God 600 years ago. Could you please tell me how the catholic and christian religions still manage to keep their faithful followers until today? Has there been some kind of movement which brought religion back to Western societies?
I live in Singapore now and I can see a lot of the local people here are 'staunch' Christians and Catholics, and even Taoists. (When I meet superstitious people, it reminds me of the medieval era or middle ages you were talking about.)

+Victoria T Religion is based on faith and belief. Humanists were devout Catholics but also valued secular knowledge and progress. Intellectualism and religion are not and never have been mutually exclusive.

Victoria T when you are raised as a child to believe in god, as well as your family, as well as your friends, as well as most of your culture, and you are taught that without a belief in god, you are immoral, fot many people, athieism isnt an option from a social perspective. It parallels gays coming out in many ways.

I had never heard the phrase "secular humanism", so I looked it up:
"Humanism, with regard in particular to the belief that humanity is capable of morality and self-fulfillment without belief in God."
From a Krishna conscious point of view, any activity without devotion, without recognition that God, (Krishna, Allah, Jehovah) is the proprietor and controller of everything, and that all activity should be done for His pleasure.......any activity that is devoid of this consciousness is immoral. From a mundane point of view, there is good and bad action. But from a spiritual point of view all material activity, both good and bad .......it is all bad. It is all immoral.
Anyone who does not recognize our eternal relationship with God as our Master and ourselves as His loving servant, and uses the resources of the material world for his own enjoyment, or the material benefit of others........such a person is a thief. To be a thief is immoral. They are coveting God's creation for their own selfish enjoyment. And they will be punished. The punishment is continuation in the cycle of birth, old age, disease and death.
Regarding the question of "fulfillment", if someone works hard, becomes wealthy, becomes famous, has a wonderful family, a beautiful home or palace...........and at any moment, such a person is guaranteed to lose everything, because death is guaranteed.....what kind of "fulfillment" is that? Also we see that anyone in this world who becomes very wealthy lives a life of anxiety. They try to arm themselves with big walls and gates around their homes. They hire guards and night watchmen. They keep big dogs to frighten intruders away. They keep large insurance policies. In other words, the so-called fulfilled human being lives in fear, and at any moment his life is finished.....and everything is taken away from him. Only a fool will consider such a life to be fulfilling. I believe that this is Srila Prabhupada's point of view.
Also if we consider humanitarianism, philanthropy, altruism......Srila Prabhupada says that this kind of activity is like diving into the water to save a drowning man, and returning with the man's clothing.......while allowing the man to drown. All of these "good works" are for the service of the material body.........but they do not save the spirit soul from the cycle of birth and death. They take care of the body, and allow the spirit soul to drown repeatedly in the cycle of birth and death. Such is the "good work" of secular humanism. They cannot save others, and they cannot save themselves. But they are very proud of being "good" people. Srila Prabhupada therefore calls them "fools and rascals".
