It's simply not true that in the 1500's the English had no sense of an identity as a nation. Look up Qe1St's speech in 1588 with the armada approaching. Even long before this during the hundred years war at poitiers , crecy, agincourt there was immense national pride in the English bowman in the wars against the French. Even as far bk as King Alfred in the 9th century he talked about uniting the provinces of wessex, mercia, Northumberland, East anglia etc into one United England. In Alfred's time u would have been correct but in the 15th, 16th century England I feel u are incorrect on this point.
