I think the 3D remake tarnished the game's legacy in the west. Even the OST was bungled. The Pixel Remaster of III surprised me how much I enjoyed it. I despise the 3D remake and for the longest time I thought Japan had rose colored glasses about the game.
FF3 enjoyers rise up! This is my go to for a simple RPG to play, honestly my favorite in the series tied with FFX. It's simple, but fun to do runs trying new jobs and strats. Also not too long so replaying isn't a drag. I'm personally a bigger fan or the 3-D remake since I like the models and that there's a super boss, but the pixel remasters were still great! Also, to organize items you just pause, hit 'Items' then in the top right it says 'Sort'...
It might have been a bug in my version in the game, because the sort button wasn't there 😭 But YEAH! This is definitely an underrated title and the overall length of the game with how much they were able to pack in here made it really worth my time. Great game! I'll likely play the 3D remake of IV
The sorting of items is definitely not intuitive. You can do it with the Sort button in the PSP version but it's still not great. I will say I had crazy fun with the Geomancer job and used that to finish the game.
Final Fantasy III is the most important Final Fantasy and it’s a shame that people in the west downplay that because they didn’t get the pure experience until recently, calling it generic. It along with Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest IV cemented that the RPG wasn’t a passing fad and was here to stay in Japan. Sure there was Megami Tensei II and Sweet Home, but this game is a big reason why the JRPG is so prolific and ubiquitous in the 90s and beyond. It is Final Fantasy 1.0 and the first true Final Fantasy game.

I think that it having blank slates makes more sense in this game is about customization and being vessels for the characters work better. @@overleveledgames sure, but balancing that and customization is hard in this situation and would likely lead to ludonarrative dissonance with different jobs and limited hardware. And Guy speak beaver is not deep character writing. The only thing notable about the main cast of FFII was the fact they had names. The only thing that FFII had over FFIII from a story perspective was the side cast. I honestly prefer having customizable blank slates over boring characters any day. There were moments in FF2 that made it stand out as an NES title with decent characters, weather they be main or side characters. FF3 had some good character moments as well! Fighting Unei and Doga, the prince assassination attempt, Desch's sacrifice, I think these were all solid moments. The lack of character in the main characters is what brings the central plot as a whole down in my mind though.
