Mario 3 is my favorite video game. The quick version is that it’s so replayable. The power up variety, creative ideas, and secret-stuffed levels make it such a good time no matter how many playthroughs I do.

I've been looking for a good retrospective for a while
I also need to add, THANK YOU for pronouncing it "ess-ness"! Me and my brother pronounce it that way because it rolls off the tongue faster, easier, and it sounds better than saying "Super Nintendo Entertainment System", "Super N-E-S", "Super Nintendo", "S-N-E-S", or that hideous pronunciation, "snehss". You're my favorite person, right now, lol. But for real, keep being you, you're awesome.
The lost levels holds a special place in my heart. Granted, I wasn't even a concept, let alone alive when the game released, but back around 2012 or 2013 when kid me was reading a Nintendo magazine about the new 3D world game there was a snipet about the Lost Levels. I basically had to beg my mom to get more Wii points so I could get it, but that game was absolutely one of my favorites. When I got a hand-me-down Gameboy color with SMB deluxe, I was so psyched to also see the Lost Levels on it. And I beat it on that Gameboy Color, which I'm still hella proud of
I remember unlocking The Lost Levels on Deluxe for the first time too! I had no idea it was an unlockable so when it just popped up after a lengthy SMB1 run, kid me got super psyched too!
It seems really dated now, playing both SMB1 and 2 on such a small, scrunched resolution, but it still did wonders for when I was young.
I don't really have any personal connections with the game, but dang it's just underrated! Once i got past the difficulty i was very captivated by how ambitious it really was for its time. My biggest complaint about the game is that having more complex level design in such small levels makes the pace much slower and it feels a bit claustrophobic especially in the Castle levels. It's just an impressive game that i still enjoy playing.

It really sucks. Mario Maker 2 is at a glance the best Mario game. But the community’s constant regurgitation of the same levels makes it lackluster. It’s really ironic, people make fun of New Super Mario Bros for not innovating, yet Mario Maker’s community doesn’t have much innovation. This video help me realize this… Overall what a great video :D

If you were playing with your friend there was a little mini game you could play on connected DS's where you had to collect more stars than the other person, and I seeked out the megamushroom for that minigame and feel the megamushroom was made with that minigame in mind

You should make a video about the future of 2D Mario and what a new concept game could or should look like. (Like your conclusion in this video but more extensive.) The NSMB formula works and is very well polished in NSMBU, but it's also kind of boring because it's not innovative anymore.

As a level designer, it's always been an amazing thing to see Nintendo finally release their own level editor for Mario. It's kinda easy to forget that not everyone had the same mindset as me and that most people just play to see what others made. So yeah, from a player's perspective I can see how these two games are a nightmare. But funnily enough I barely even touch the online mode. I just like to make levels to play with friends every now and again

DYK, the video game crash was exclusive to the US, and to home consoles. Part of the reason was gaming PCs slashed their prices. Also Nintendo and Sega released new consoles on the same day of the same year, nintendo just barely edged ahead with a better controller.
22:50 Actually, Mario 3 doesn't even take place in the Mushroom Kingdom, each world in the game is supposed to be one of 7 neighboring kingdoms to it, hence the different kings, and also why the Princess isn't even captured until World 8. Funnily enough, the only Mario platformer to take place in the Mushroom Kingdom would be Mario 1 (and Lost Levels) until we get to Mario 64, as Mario 2, Mario 3, Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Mario Land, Mario Land 2, and Mario Land 3 all take place in other locations that aren't in the Mushroom Kingdom.
A 2D Mario Multiverse game would be so cool where you get sucked into sections of SNES and stuff. Odyssey had these sections too.

Yep! There’s yellow and there’s red. Yellow implies that there’s one exit in a level, red implies that there is a secret exit somewhere to find.

Seems like it. Sadly I wasn’t able to notice it before it was originally uploaded; it was one of those things the editor kinda snuck in without my knowing.
Some of the freshest Nintendo/Mario Universe games are sadly often overlooked and/or under appreciated. In regards to pure sales #s at least. Ex: Warioland (specifically WL1 and Shake It), Mario RPG (snes), Supermario 3D Land, the Yoshi games, SuperPeach, etc. (I haven’t played Superstar Saga, or Bowser’s Inside Story yet but looking forward to it)
Though I’m all for Mariomaker and any good that’s come from it, I feel like an inherent problem with it is that majority of levels will be contributed by people with the most time…kids who couldn’t make a pro Mario game. And trolls lol 🤷🏻♂️🤣 Unfortunately, I feel like those within Nintendo are largely afraid of taking chances and doing new things with Mario. (Ex: we’re still dropping Bowser into lava pits. “Cmooooon!”) SMB2, SML2&3, some of the Mario RPG games…all showcase how small changes, even in final enemy, go a long way to making memorable new experiences. It’s a shame those innovations rarely get the same attention as all the recycled stuff does.
Imagine a game starring Wario, where Waluigi kidnaps Daisy and Wario’s castle/fortune. Wario recruits M,L, Peach, Toad and Bowser to take WL out and you can play as any of that lineup. (And/or multiplayer) Immediately creates potential for new scenery, enemies, gameplay, story and experiences. I personally don’t see it happening. But one can dream lol

I grew up in the 80s and 90s. These were the premier games of my childhood.
Y'all were able to capture the good bad and ugly in an almost retrospective manner...I'm almost convinced y'all are 40 like me...

I appreciate these games for carrying me through my brother's Naruto phase because I could just turn on New Super Mario bros and ignore the Neji fight even with him screaming at me about how "cool it was"
I created all 6 of my super worlds in smm2 and most of these levels are very similar to levels from smb, smbll, smb2, smb3, sml and smw. Like for example, my first super world is similar to the original super mario bros.
I actually do not mind the backwards warp zones in Lost Levels and don't think they're that jerky of a move, they've actually HELPED me significantly more than they've ever screwed me over. Reason being is how they're designed and where they're placed: they don't really make you lose much progress or anything really and moreso just are helpful if you're running low on lives and need to go back to an easier world to get a refill. And they do this by first of all only having two of them in the whole game, and both of those two warp you back to right before a forward warp zone, 1-2 and 5-2 respectively. Meaning you can warp back to 1-1 or 5-1, get some extra lives (you can get five 1-ups in 1-1 alone if you know what to do), and then immediately warp right back to where you were at 3-1 or 8-1, easy. It's the only way to backtrack too since World Maps weren't a thing yet. And best of all if I remember correctly, is that the game will STILL count this as a Warpless run of the game if you do this, meaning you'll still unlock World 9, all it cares about is that you originally made it through each world warpless, not if you use warps to repeat any worlds and then warp forward again.
An interesting perspective. Though if a player has all this prior knowledge, it still does sound like a lot of work just for a few extra 1-ups in a game where a game over only sends you back, at worst, three levels behind
@@DoujinShinji Eh it's not that much work (especially since one of the worlds you get sent back to is hecking World 1 which is so easy), and it has saved my runs many times. Oftentimes when your skill is still developing, those three lives you start a world in after a game over may not be enough for you to make it through all four levels to the next and then you're just stuck, especially the further into the game you get; that certainly happened to me a lot my first few runs of the game.
But at any rate, I'm just pointing out that the backwards warp zones were very intentionally placed not in a way to just screw you over, but were intentionally placed to warp you back to right before a forwards warp zone (in an area that's not even that hard) rather than leave you stranded in a random isolated spot, so at worst they're a quite minor setback and at best actively helpful and even run-saving. It seems to me that fact often gets entirely overlooked in favor of just "these suck because they take you backwards, what a sadistic troll" and that's all the consideration of their design they get.
The real kicker in how much this thought was put into their design here is this: if you're in 3-1 and you want to get from there to World 4, it's actually FASTER to take the backwards warp back to World 1, and then warp ahead to World 4, on the same run, than it is to just go through World 3, as the former only has you playing 3 levels to get to World 4 while the latter has you playing 4. Granted this wouldn't be helpful if you really wanted to play World 9 since you skip 3-4 but still, as far as pure speed goes the backwards warp zone is the optimal path to take in that scenario.

Also I wanted to say that when I was a kid I always thought those weird enemies in the DS game were mini triceratops with unicorn horns because I thought the shape of their hat thing was in the same shape but it was hard to make out because of the bad graphics 😭😭 also this was a great video man. It's not to be said that Mario World was rushed, Mario 3 and World were made simultaneously, since the planned 3 sequel was a thing but with the SNES upcoming it was decided that a new mario game should be made for it instead of changing the plans of 3 from NES to SNES. That's why they are close in date and differ in aspects like the power ups.
Also, the reason for the Leaf making mario a Tanuki is because of japanese folklore, tanukis use a leaf to make their their transformations
