  • Analog gaming keyboards claim to do pretty much everything and are becoming more popular with the Wooting Two, Steelseries Apex Pro, Razer Huntsman V2 Analog and others jumping on the ship. Sure there are some benefits like Fortnite double movement but for the price are analog keyboards really worth it for PC gaming?

Tartarus pro here. The analog switches are actually useful in a select scenarios and I like the feel of it. For me, I've taken advantage of the dual actuation points in some games. But, I will say that just because you can doesn't mean you should. For most of the time I still stick with the one press one function. Use it when it makes sense, and when it does, it works great.

  • @j.d.4697

The problem is they implemented this tech, but didn't actually make any use case for them.
Only Wooting seem to slowly be changing that with their upcoming Wooting Two HE which uses the analog system to let keypresses trigger a "release" the moment you slightly move up instead of only when going all the way back up beyond the "activate" line.
A small step but the right direction.

Analog switches could be very useful for content creators, those who like making gaming clips, and for RPers, or those looking for the best gaming immersion experience.
As for the dual step actuations in FPS, you can assign a key to equip an item then use that item, which even includes pulling an item from your inventory and equipping it while using it. You could also assign a key to aim and zoom in to the maximum magnification without having to right click / click the zoom/aim key and then also press middle mouse or the magnification key.
The dual step actuations can be a huge game changers for MMORPGs
Razer Insider, Razer Reddit, or Razer Discord always have people uploading their profiles for others to use when it comes to lighting and keybinds.

  • @MarcSpctr
    @MarcSpctr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

not just for games, but just the ability to set custom actuation point is a solid win.
also they could introduce magnetic tech that Logitech uses in mx master 3 scroll wheel, if you want, it can be tactile with feedback, and if you want it can also be linearly smooth.
imagine optical keys that can be tactile and linear both according to users choice.

As cool as having 4 action bind to one key press it will be extremely situational and this will activate every time you press down or travel up and release as well.
Having macro keys are just easier and can be put on independent keys. At least with the analog you might have 2 action and that is on press and bottom out. or on travel up and release. Still I really can't see many options for multiple action on one key at least not more than 2 independent actions.
Even if you are a combo users, those will be on cool-down or need a perfect set up every time to execute it just right. Otherwise you'll mill out a few of the skill moves or attack to go into the "perfect chain" execution. For that, you are better off program them into a macro to press one button and execute it.

For me, as a steelseries apex pro owner, it's not about any extra analog feature but about the smoothness of the linear switches, they are miles ahead of any other mechanical switches and I can def feel the difference, even against the other non analog switches on the Steelseries :)
Also setting the level on when they actuate is pretty cool, I personally can't stand hyperactive switches (1-1.5mm), they get a lot of accidental presses for me, I prefer they around 2mm :)
But your video is valid, all this marketing buzz is mostly useless.
The key feel (on the steelseries and I bet on the razer as well) is legit, tho :)
And not having hyperactive switches for me is also worth the price, but if you don't care about that then it's not worth getting this keyboard or the steelseries :)

I would argue that Wooting has not been idle since this video went up with all their improvements to both their software and the new Lekker switches themselves. Unlike the other big name corps, the Wooting lads are extremely engaging with their customers and constantly talking about their next ideas and news via their blogs and streams. The Wootility software also has an "open source" online catalog of game profiles ready to go, which counters the "no recommended list" complaint I think.
Full disclosure, I'm a pre-order customer for the latest Wooting Two HE, but overall have been extremely happy to invest in such a close company of young entrepreneurs who still have a burning passion for what they're doing.

The real use case for "dual step" is light press does iron sights/aims, and heavy press fires. It's pretty obvious. Most other scenarios aren't very obvious.
A LOT of games have iron sights, so I think the reason that this guy and others don't even think of the scenario is that usually mouse button 1 fires--not a keyboard input.

Interesting idea, but with poor software and few games that support it fully, I wouldn't go this route.
To improve the feel, I would suggest a progressive spring that gets firmer the further you press the key, so that it gives some resistance against the full press. This would help differentiate between a light tap and a full press. Progressive springs can be tiring on the fingers though - I have Halo True tactile switches which max out at 100 grams of actuation force, and holding keys down (especially the shift with the pinky finger) for hours-long gaming sessions makes me want lighter switches. I think this is something that is so personal that finding the ideal spring progression would be difficult for the manufacturers.

In league of legends, you utilize analog keys by having quick skill cast and quick skill cast with indicator together to boost your mechanic and accuracy.
This allows you to get rid of the shift key. You will be casting skills in fast speed with indicators for more extreme range management with just one click.
That was wat I've been spamming with wooting.

As someone who is used to Cherry MX blue switches, I can tell you that the click is above the actuation point, and I have plenty of practice on keeping the key just under the clicker to press it faster multiple times.

I actually googled 'analog keyboard' about 4ish years ago and found out about Wooting. I immediately ordered a Wooting One and I love it.
I use digital input in competitive shooters because of response time, but in single player games I always use analog.
Another thing I love about the Wooting keyboards is that the switches are modular. My WASD keys were getting a little crunchy, so I just replaced the switches. No soldering, not buying a whole new keyboard, I just popped the old switches out with a key puller, and put 3 new ones in. Wooting supplies 3 replacement blue and red switches with their keyboards as well. I think they knew that would happen haha. You can also buy an entire replacement set of keys on their website for under $60USD. So, you buy the keyboard once and you can replace the keys as necessary without having to shill out another 100-150$USD for a new keyboard.
With mechanical keyboards being outrageously expensive already, why wouldn't you pony up a little bit extra and get not only optical switches but analog optical switches as well?
A lot of people say that this is a gimmick, or marketing strategy, honestly I wanted it before I even knew it existed so I'm sure other people did as well.
Thanks again Calder Jeroen and Erik, you guys rock!
    Wooting Stan out!

It was a super exciting concept and the reason why I got a MK850....but in practice it just doesn't work on red switches. They would need to be Cherry MX Black heavy style or even more resistant.

I bought a tartatus pro and I have to say, i had zero learning curve, I was switching from walk to run, veeery slowly peeking around corners, and using analog for driving in 15-30 min. So i picked it up right away, and i've been typing for 30 years, and still had no issues learning to press keys softly or muscle memory wanting to just smash down. So i suppose it's very person to person. I love analog keys, I'm thinking of swapping the tartarus for a full board, mainly because of the terrible placement on the space key.. ugh.

I feel the same way. I just got a new keyboard and was considering something like this to have total control over games like using a controller... but after thinking about it, I realized it is pretty pointless. If I really want precision in a racing game - I almost always just pick up a controller anyway. Throttle on an analog trigger will almost always be better then a keyboard - unless you get the razor 10mm actuation distance swtiches.

Day 1 of telling HC to build their own mechanical keyboard and grow from there.

    • @blahorgaslisk7763
      @blahorgaslisk7763 3 ปีที่แล้ว

While building a keyboard is in the realm of doable, and even not really all that hard, relatively, making the software to support something like these analog switches is a pretty daunting project. Just look at all the grief companies like Razer, Logitech and Corsair get for their software suites. They've been at it for years and still haven't perfected the software side and they have spent a lot of money developing what they have. Having a single product to support would of course make it simpler, but whenever you decide to add a product things get complicated. You can just make a new software, but then you have to support two different sets of code. Or you do what others have tried to and create a software suit that works for all your products, but then it tends to grow in complexity for each product or version of a product you add support, and it gets hard to provide a good clean GUI that's easy to use, powerful, stable and has a solid user experience.

@@blahorgaslisk7763 Not really "that kind" of building a mechanical keyboard with HC's identity (make their own design, manufacture, etc.) but rather just build their own custom board using existing aftermarket parts (kits, switches, stabilizers, mods, etc.) for each HC staff.
Though I do get your side haha

@@justindelacruz9172 Ah! Yea, that could make for an interesting series of videos.
Personally I'm not a keyboard aficionado. All I want is N-Key rollover and a numpad. The actual switch used is however not something I really worry about. But there are a lot of people who take a huge interest in anything key switch related.
For a video series like this it might be interesting to make two keyboards for each person. One which they are to specc for work and one specced for gaming. What would their choices of tech and layout be for these two situations. Would they want the same layout for both gaming and work?

    • @justindelacruz9172
      @justindelacruz9172 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@blahorgaslisk7763 Yeah the return diminishes greatly as you go more expensive with keyboard parts. It's more of an "I can just because" thing rather than a "I should because it's handy or useful" situation.
A nice keyboard under $100 will give you all the features you need honestly (n-key rollover, 1000hz polling rate, hotswappable board, etc).
Yeah, I just want them to build their own decked out boards. Really curious with what they'll go with.

As cool as that sounds. It’s a waste for them to do that and make videos on it. If they make a video on a mainstream keyboard people who are thinking about buying it will watch it.

Although a timer along with the height / second activation point could work; a momentary bottoming out could class as the same as a mid activation (walking), but held 0.5 / 1.0 sec could then represent the second function (running).

basically, to make this thing actually work, they need to change that 75g switches to something around 120g or even more (like 150g super black switches), so u can actually feel the difference between soft touch and actual force applied.
same goes for all "cybersport" mice - i cant play shooter games with something less than ~120g weight, i cant be accurate when i dont feel what am i moving and dont know what force should i apply.
