Amazing work catching the Erwin area before and after the storm. I couldn't believe a bridge I crossed many times near Uncle Johnny's was completely washed away. Wishing the community the strength to recover and rebuild.

Was that a dog being swept by at 1:25 to 1:28 or just debris. Obviously there's nothing you could've done in that situation anyway, just noticed what looked like a dog turning its head and looking up at camera. May have been debris though

Was any of the dangerous dump in Bumpas Cove compromised during the Hurricane? I’ve heard rumors of poisons in the river downstream since the floods.

Hello sir. I live next to the James D Elliott bridge in Embreeville. I knew 81/107 was washed out but now I can fully grasp the magnitude of destruction that affected that stretch of highway. Thank you for sharing. Your videography skills are excellent!

"Devil's Looking Glass" supposedly was named by Cherokee the "Spirits' Looking Glass," because you could see 7 spirits faces in the rock outcrop. The early European settlers condemned all things native and changed the name to reflect the practice of demonic heatherns. I used to raft guide there in the 80's and that is the story that was passed along to the rafting customers. A couple of other guides and myself paddled over one day and climbed the face of the cliff. The other two had climbed it before and established a route. We put up a new route to the right of center that traversed the overhang and joined into the main center crack. We named it 'Radiation Burnout,' and rated the route at 5.8, in case anyone was wondering... Having paddled that river many times, it blows my mind that I have lived to witness this massive geologic event.

Well, I'm 1.5 miles north of this area and now I see why the Lamar "convenience" center will have to be moved. Yikes! The flood really trashed that area and took out the bridge!

When we traveled home to Erwin we always came through Greenville and up the River Road passing so many landmarks. Looks like the Devil's Looking Glass is one of the ones still firmly standing. When I was a child, in that bend right at the Looking Glass was the place of a town dump. Yes, there should be many artifacts.

I suggest make room for the river to overflow ,maybe a chanal beside the freeway

WOW! I wondered about the 107 road into Erwin. Used to travel that many times. Not surprised that it's basically gone. I guess the logging operation that was there is also gone, as well as the rafting place. Almost bought a house in Embreeville 25 years ago.

I can't begin to describe how much your videos touch me. I was born in Asheville, NC. My parents lived in our house in Swannanoa, NC. When WWII geared up Dad took Mom and me to family in Unicoi County. I grew up in Higgins Creek, Coffee Ridge and Erwin. It just hearts my heart to see all the flood devastation and then I see the mountains and I know as long as the mountains are there we still have "home".

We live in the most beautiful place in the world. What Devil's Looking Glass area like?

I work in this county and the exit you see (40) is the one I used to take to work. The river is the Nolichucky River that flows in from NC via the Nolichucky Gorge. Even in a moderate rain this river is fairly violent and I know many people who will never raft it again. These are some of the best people you'll ever meet and the town is just an average town with no tourism really but with an awesome backdrop. There is an American flag in front of most homes and it is truly a model of what most of America used to be. Please keep the people of Unicoi County in your thoughts and prayers.
