As I've been working to embrace my inner swashblucker, I'm finding it's hard to look 'Renaissance' without just looking like a cowboy. Weird realization, that. Think I'm going to need to carry around a rapier just so people get the point. 😅
This might make this into a game that I play through with my wife from start to finish -- makes me regret waiting to finally play it a bit less, too, because this is super cool
I'd say it's a good thing you waited, I already loved my time with the game, but this would definitely have been some fun additional mechanics to enjoy, plus co-op with a friend or my wife would have made some _awesome_ memories!
The only co-op turn based game I have ever played, is Dragon Quest 9. Ut was such an incredible experience going through the story and battles with a friend! This seems like it'll be similar, but with extra things like the button timings. Definitely going to get a friend to run through SoS with!
I havent watched the channel in a while, I'm liking the new look Derek. I was thinking about picking up Sea of Stars soon, I'm not sure yet. The game reminds me of Snes era Rpg's.
Great video, Derek! You shared some great aspects of the new update that I haven’t yet seen elsewhere on YT. After watching your video, it tipped me over the edge to where I’d dare say that it’s worth an additional play-through. Cheers man!
Wow I just finished the game and I did not know the challenge mode was new lol. It was really fun, though beating the game without items on my very first play through got really tough coming to the end of the game
Ya know in fantasy stories how sometimes there's a heroine who gets betrothed to a noble via arranged marriage, and the noble initially seems all gentlemanly and proper, but actually it turns out he's the main villain and he's plotting to murder her father AND her after the marriage so he can take the crown? That's what Derek looks like. He looks like that noble. He's that guy. We are witnessing the Super Derek to Villainous Noble Derek pipeline, right before our eyes.
About the 3 players co-op, actually the original version of Secret of Mana had it too, but it needed an accessory to be able to plug more controllers on the SNES.
Yep! And there's a romhack that enables it for Trials of Mana also -- what I was talking about is specifically _turn-based_ RPGs having 3-player co-op. Never experienced _that_ before. :)
I wish I was half as strategic as you think I am. What's worse, is I just copied the text splash from my previous sponsored vid, now realizing it's been in use 4 times and I only now know about it. I assure you that I'm more of a bard than a wizard. 🤣
Thanks for doing the overview of what's new! While the co-op mode sounds interesting, I'd like to point out that Divinity Original Sin 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 have had the co-op mode in a turn based RPG for a while now. That doesn't diminish the addition to Sea of Stars, but just wanted to prompt folks who are interested in this sort of gameplay to check those out - they are both stellar in this regard!
I've had the Kickstarter exclusive sea of stars for a bit now and it was on my list to play through, but decided to keep waiting because of the new DLC dropping (dropped?). So this new update is just fantastic since I haven't actually played yet
Challenge mode is nice, but they can't fix how bad the writing of the story is. Spoilers I guess: Maybe make the final boss and actual ending not locked behind scavenger hunts and achievement hunting either, that'd at least help, not sure if they did that but they should. You get teased with the main villain all game then unless you are following a 100% guide, you don't even get to fight him, you do some shmup minigame and the game suddenly ends in an unsatisfying way.
Greetings from brazil, i follow your channel for some years now but i don't comment often. Very nice video and analysis Derek 🤝🙏❤️ Question about the podcast Hitpoint do you upload them on TH-cam? Normaly e see on Twitch but i can't put on my tv.
Heya! Yes, we actually stream them primarily on TH-cam, here's a link to the dedicated channel: www.youtube.com/@HPpod We ended up taking the last couple of weeks off due to light news, paired with Baku recovering from a massive charity stream the night before, but we'll be back at it soon! :)
Yep! Turns out it was planned from the start, but animating all of the kid's attack animations had to be cut from the 1.0 release. So now it's actually the starting point in the game. :)
I sat this one out for now, had a lot of other stuff on my plate, but I _did_ review the OG a few years back. It's a fun game! And the updates are gorgeous!
Personally, I'm not sure. I know that, initially, there was going to be a "co-op dungeon" of some sort, specifically made to be a place where co-op could happen. But they ended up expanding Co-op to the entire game instead, and cut that co-op specific dungeon.
Great game that's garnered some undeserved hate recently. Glad to see some more free content (and removal of a certain excommunicated scam artist TH-camr).
Is the dialogue much improved? I could only play 10 minutes into the original before I had to stop cause the character interactions were so generic and bland.
See, that's the weird thing -- I never had a problem with the dialogue in the first place, so perhaps I'm not a good judge of that? But I do know they've refined most of the in-game dialogue, so it might be worth another look to decide for yourself.
@@SuperDerek I thought the beginning was pretty good, but after that the writing quickly just became awful. None of the characters are interesting in the least bit, none of them have any character development. And the worst guy of all pretty much steals all glory away from the 'main characters'.
Checked contents of the update - they didn't rewrite horrendous story and unsatistactory ending of character arcs. Sigh, they had the chance to make this game truly great, but refuse to fix the weakest parts of it...
This feels like this adds nothing for me because while I struggled a bit with the initial game I got through it on the true ending like three months ago and had nothing else to experience other than the Watchmaker DLC and the other achievement where you play on an ultra hard mode where I think you have to beat ten bosses in a row with the ability to only take one hit or increased damage while fighting them. I know that's activated through a relic from the start of the game now, but I see nothing new for myself here as I never saw nor have the ability to co-op this game. Might play it again for that last achievement and then the prologue and one added scene later but I thought this was for Watchmaker dlc.
Yeah I suppose a multiplayer feature update wouldn't. I'm mostly a solo-player because few games I enjoy have multi-player. But I've got friends and a wife who like RPGs, so having a co-pilot drop in or out sounds nice to me. But otherwise, the updated mechanics, intro sequence, and balance improvements are a nice bonus for everyone else.
I struggled to even finish this already short game. Combat and characters were boring. I dont know how a rewrite or narrative update would fix. Couldn't care less about multiplayer.
I've been meaning to watch the trailer but I keep forgetting and I don't want to watch it on the phone because I want to see it in a glorious 56 in of my TV or whatever size TV I have that I can't remember anymore but 50 something
Easily the most overrated indie JRPG in ever made. The visuals and music are literally the only elements of the game that are good. Combat gets stale quickly, even for bosses and there's some major issues with it. This update doesn't change anything significant.
Derek is gradually changing from a 90s alt rock singer into a pirate.
Changing job class to bard takes longer irl
Argggggggggggggh matey
Sky Pirate
We appreciate the feedback, thanks!
@@wood-guy ummmmmmm considering the literal thousands of positive reviews and sales numbers I'd say the game is good.
@@wood-guy I say it's not. And I know better than you.
Crazy that there is STILL more free content to show up too!
The most important update for me was the update to your facial hair.
The SuperDerek Mustache update has been in development for over 3 months, and adds tons of new quality-of-life features. Highly recommended.
@@SuperDerek is it possible to obtain such power?
Derek looking like he's out of an RPG these days. Nothing wrong with that

Thank goodness I have been tackling my backlog before buying Sea of Stars. Now, I"ll play it with great improvements in gameplay. ✨️
Throes of the Watchmaker is also just around the corner, so if you end up loving it there's more on the way! :)
@PersonWhoIsTired I am 25 hours in and it's been amazing.
Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana was the original 3 player co op RPG. Was a great game far ahead of its time.
Time to go through the game a second time. But this time, in Québécois!
This might make this into a game that I play through with my wife from start to finish -- makes me regret waiting to finally play it a bit less, too, because this is super cool

I always wait a year or two. So many games get better and cheaper 1 year out it's almost wild to buy release games
Somethings reminded me to watch the 3 musketeers again 🤔
Interesting video. I need to go back and finish this game, it was great
I have been waiting to get this game since its release. This finally pushed me over the edge and I got it during its current sale! Thanks for the vid!
Awesome, enjoy! :D

Finally bought it because of this video. Thanks Super D.
Enjoy dude! :D
FF6 had multiplayer coop in battle too! Not as engaging as SoS but it was there
As a serial solo-player, I had no idea that was a thing! I'll have to look into it!
It recorded inputs from both controllers at the same time, so p2 could fuck up Sabin input commands for p1 and vice versa
LOL!

This makes me sad that Tales of Arise never got a multiplayer update despite a lot more people worked on it.
more turn based jrgs need that co op option!

I have a super weird question: Does this game have voice acting at all for like any cut scenes ?
There are a few short hand-animated cinematics here and there, but has no voice acting.
