I totally disagree with Serai being so low. In a game where breaking locks in a small time windows can mean the difference between a good time and a bad time, Serai’s disorient was just too good. I was able to shut down single target bosses nonstop and stop any big moves that were on the horizon
Honestly with how this game's level system and swapping around members with ease none of them are outright bad at all, even if B'st was a late addition, his redeeming part was being another blunt attacker while Serai and Re'Shan I found useful for their cooldown attacks that I kinda abused some bosses and enemies with.
Serai is one of the best Dave. Her utility is unmatched with double techs. Her multiple hit attacks help break locks and she can make enemies delay their turns. With Rashan she can delay enemy turns upwards 6 or more turns. Garl is more bottom tier as he is not able to break locks and his specials are harder to time and he only does blunt damage and doesn't have element.
I’m shocked to see Serai soo low, she absolutely carried me through the game with her delay skill making it easier to break enemy weaknesses and B’st was a good party member the only thing holding him back in my eyes is his accessibility.
I personally can’t see myself putting Re’Shan anywhere other that the top slot for the reasons you mentioned, plus the fact that his Ultimate is by far the most useful, not only doing damage, but also delaying enemy actions AND providing a full party-wide heal.
Serai is the best. She's got an attack that goes on and on as long as you can time it right, and her delays make her useful at all times for lock breaking.
Serai is broken. I used her in basically every fight i could because of disorient being able to work on 99% of the monsters, including the end game bosses! I'm pretty sure there's literally only 1 enemy that you can't use Disorient on successfully. She made the game waaay too easy. At first i was happy that the move worked on bosses, but then i was disappointed that they didn't make the later ones immune to it.
Serai I found to be very helpful in combat with her delay, more reliable access to poison and having a second option for AOE attacks, plus I found her timing for attacks easier to pin down. I used her probably the most besides the two leads. I don't think she needs high attack power to be of use since that's what other characters are for. Regardless, since you can change characters on the fly and need certain ability to bypass locks to cancel enemy attacks, I found all the characters useful in different circumstances, so I was satisfied with the cast
While I agree with a lot on this list, I think you should have factored in that everyone’s turn is interchangeable, as long as they haven’t made a move yet with your 3 party slots. This makes all characters useful and have their moments in battle where their exact combo moves can break tough opponents. Additionally, although I agree with Reshan’s placement if looking at skills available at any moment, I think when you factor in his ultimate, he is on par with the solstice warriors. For reference, most ultimates are a big nuke in this game. Reshan’s is a nuke, hits all enemies, delays all enemies THREE turns, and finally REVIVES AND THEN HEALS the party.
I felt garl was a little lack luster in combat. I personally rank him below serai tbh. Serais disorient was so good for allowing me to just wail on bosses. But for random encounters yeah she ain't great. Also reshrans ultimate is sooooo good. I can't believe you didn't mention how useful it is. Does damage/heals!/ and adds timer to enemy. It's a great ability. Last point, lunar shield stacks! So as good as it is, if you really wanted to, you can have up to 3 shields on you which is soooo good
I would put Zale above Valere for having the cheapest healing ability which, if you time correctly (pretty easy) will always restore to full health or very close to it. It's super reliable. His Sunball also reliably hits hard, and the splash damage becomes full damage when you get his special accessory, which is huge. One thing I don't like about Valere's Moonerang is it slows down the pace, and the timing changes depending on enemy formation, which can be annoying in some fights. I prefer Serai's Venom Flurry which *always* has the same timing, and it also costs -1MP less. With that said, my ranking would look like this: Zale > Valere > Resh'an ≥ Serai > Garl > B'st There's a case for Serai being the best though, because the ability to delay enemy's turn is OP. It's almost game-breaking, especially with the accessory that makes skills cost -1 MP.
Garl is best boy, hands down. But I have to admit I really like Serai’s ability to push the countdown timer back, so I kept her in more than Garl pre-Re’Shan. I definitely agree about Valere! Lunar Shield has saved my party so many times, it’s ridiculous!
I love Garl so much, but I would personally rank him last, because while B'st can only attack he does better damage than Garl. I also would rank Serai higher, because disorient really helps in boss fights where they give you like 2 turns to hit a ton of weaknesses.
Resh, Serai are both OP due to the turn delays they have. Combo it with mending heal and lunar shield and the game just went from easy to tutorial journalist mode.
Funny how I 100% this game and I completely disagree with your tier list, but that’s the beauty, they all have their use. Such a well designed game I would have gladly paid double the $35 if I knew what I was getting into
I got SO much mileage out of Valerie's Moonerang. My entire gameplan was to get her all 3 of those little orbs and then keep her MP up so I could use it over and over. Sometimes when I really got into the groove you could wipe entire bosses really easily with that one attack. Of course sometimes you'll be getting your teeth kicked in while you constantly miss time the move, but OTHER than that, my favorite move in the game lol
I got this game THIS MORNING. I played the demo and it didn't click. But after playing it from the start, it's a much better experience. I'm pretty early in the game. I just defeated Elder Mist less than 5 minutes ago. Valerie's Moonerang had me saying out loud : "Damn this girl is amazing." What a fantastic skill.
One thing about B'st...they took some inspiration from Ayla for him. His fist weapon levels up as you gain levels, and doesn't hit perfection till the game's natural cap of 30. I imagine he gains considerably more from those highest levels than other characters as a consequence.
You should share your diet/workout regimen. I am struggling losing my gut and getting that chest definition. Looking good brother! And I thoroughly enjoy listening to your videos while playing JRPGs lmao.
One of the things I really like about this game is how you need everyone in battle. Zale, Valere, and Resh'an are a little better, but you really do need everyone in boss battles.
Garl timed bonks were huge during the early game. I think his only downside for keeping up with the entore team was his lack of element, you boost thenguy and he just attacks with friendship. I love him though, plot armor and all
Serai and Reshan almost felt mandatory with their delay/tile destruction attacks on certain fights. You could almost stun lock some bosses with Serai if you used her delay attack at the right times. B'st is cute but didn't do much that other characters couldn't. Valere and Zale are ofc mandatory members they just wash everyone else, especially with their combination attacks. Garl is in his own tier God, hearing the battle themes in the background is bringing back all the great moments from this game!
I was so annoyed when I lost garl, even just temporary, for serai. Like, not only was I losing my tanky healer husbando, but I was also getting an “assassin” with subpar stats on, imo, the map where the enemy dmg spiked the hardest. Though I would’ve still put Re’shan as 1 if nothing else just because of his ultimate, talk about absolutely broken. Not that it matters that much anyway since I always kept swapping people around in fights cause they all lovely. Great game and great list. Have a good day, David!

He really didn't have any terribly useful abilities, and this isn't the kind of game that needs a "tank". 5. Garl: Again, his abilities were "meh". I used him fairly little. 4. Zale: Zale's great, but he has some problems. He has no good way to break a bunch of locks like some other characters, and his sunball hits HARD, but is pricey, and not as good at screen-clearing. 3. Reshan: There's only one reason I put him this high, and it's because of his game-breaking ultimate. By far the strongest ultimate in the game, it fully heals the party, does respectable damage, and most importantly, delays all enemy turns. 2. Serai: You're right her stats suck. But she has two outstanding abilities. The multilock/multitarget venom flurry, and the absurd "lock a boss down forever" disorient. Pump her mp first and she's a utility queen. 1. Valere: I agree she's the strongest character in the game. Moonerang is the best spell for my money, and unlike most characters, none of her spells are useless. She hits absurdly hard, and more reliably than Zale due to the way their premiere spells target. Her shield's a great emergency button, and when all else fails, she basic attacks better than anyone else.
Apparently, B'st is pronounced Beast. One of his attacks is a reference to Altered Beast. The character is a Living Glass Golem, according to the profile. I will say, though, that he looks absolutely adorable.
Gotta take some notes for when I get the game when the physical comes out xD B'st looks really neat, I always love using the unorthodox characters in my party, even if they aren't the best
I use serii for most the game her assassin warp attack is super useful! Equip her with attack or defense adds more to ability points and give her life steal mp 5 and combo boost. Max out the phase shift + attack will knock out stronger opponents 1 shot
Looking forward to the DLC. I'm not expecting it to happen, but it would be fun if the DLC takes place after the main game, adds a new character, and Zale and Valere aren't available at all throughout the DLC until the second phase of the final boss fight.
Awww, I miss this game already. I didn't mind that Valerie and Vale were clearly the OP two, since you can switch at any time without penalty. I used them in the front line about 80% of the time, and switched the third accordingly. Here's my top 6. I loved Serai. 1 - Valerie 2 - Vale 3 - Serai 4 - Re'Shan 5 - Garl 6 - B'st
I rolled with Serai as my third party member for most of the game. But seriously David, if you haven't, play The Messenger, by the same developers. It's not a JRPG, but as a 80s / 90s kid I think you'll love it.

I think you put Serai too low. I mean, her disorient ability is too op tbh. There were many bosses which I never had the chance of seeing their special because of her lol
Reshans ultimate move and Serais disorient made them the 2 most useful characters. Garl is the least useful since his charged attacks never do anything and can only heal 1 person making reshan a better healer. Bst is slightly more viable than garl
B'st is pretty good. Very high dmg on his spell and good normal attack. Sarai IS THE BEST CHARACTER OF THE GAME WHAT THE HELLLLLLLL IS THAT HAHAHA! The delay on her spell is the best spell in the whole game. You can litteraly shutdown a boss forever. Rashan is pretty bad but can do 3 hit of arcane with his spell or poison+arcane with empowered autoattack so you use it to break and his ult does it all. Garl is good when you get it with his heal but it falls off really hard after. Probable the worst character. Zale and Valere are OP. Zale is the best damage dealer and his 3 point combo that do a fire tornado is the most damaging thing in the game. Valere is a powerhouse, shield + heal and heavy magic damage with the bouncing thing. I would say, for me: 1) Sarai (utility on steroid) 2) Zale (dmg god) 3) Valere (versatibility = damage, good break option, nice shield+heal spell. Maybe number 2 not sure 4) Rashan for breaking shield and best ult 5) B'st (solo damage and autoattack damage) 6) Garl (ok solo damage and ok healing (fall off hard)
For the longest time, I thought that Reshan was useless--then I started to actually use him. As frustrating as he is for the story, his skills in battle are unquestionable. Also, you can just call Zale and Valere "Gold Cardboard" and "Silver Cardboard". It's the same thing.
Sorry but... as soon as i got Serai, i nearly never used Garl again. Garl is probably the most beloved Charakter in the game. But in combat i prefer Serai. Her Delay is absolutley essential in late game if you don't want to get hit by every special attack of a boss. Stats are not everything. I think Resh'an is better than her in general, but i really don't wanna miss Serai in combat. Of course, everyone has a diffrent playstyle and uses diffrent partymembers.
The thing this video tells me is that you can love the game the same as someone else - and yet it can be for completely different reasons! Serai #1 for me, high DPS - that portal shiv is a one hitter quitter.
I really like Serai honestly but fair list. Garl just annoyed the hell out of me. Ya he's a loveable character but the more I play Sea of Stars the worse the writing comes off. It's just so on the nose and forced. With Garl's story i felt almost nothing.
I love your videos but I have to disagree with the list. In particular putting Serai near the bottom. Disorient is hands down the best skill in the game. Getting 2 extra turns to break locks can be the difference between eating a boss''s ultimate attack and keeping them from ever doing anything the entire battle. My personal list would probably be Garl (he's still my fave and I use him regardless) < B'st < Reshaan < Zale < Valere < Serai in terms of sheer mechanical usefulness.
Phase Shv is great for one-shotting enemies I have found since getting Serai. With Tactian's Mettle, Double Dare, and Double Edge Relics active I'm really having to keep on my toes. Garl's so far a bottom tier character for me cause I am having to always wait for his single heal Nourish. Valerie and Zale about equal to me so far with this game obviously trying to make Zale your magic dealing tank and Valerie an attacker with a safety net.
Like idk I thought he should have had more mp and a more offensive kit while I would say valerie should have been more like zales kit rn while keeping her stats currently or needing her mp
I don't know, these descriptions don't help make it sound so appealing. 1 is bad and super late. Another not so useful. 2 practically mandatory. So a third slot for everyone else, though only 2 are good?
I’m a JRPG fanatic. I love them almost as much as I love Phil Collins. I could NOT get into this game. It was such a slowwww slog in the beginning. I keep dropping it after 2 or 3 hours. I hear it picks up and gets good around hour 4ish when they meet the pirates or something. But I just cannot keep pushing. I dunno, maybe it’s just JRPG burnout. Guess I’ll have to come back to it later and not directly after i binged games like Chained Echoes and Breath of Fire on GBA 🤷♂️
I finished the game, and overall enjoyed it, but.... The story is pretty simple, and lacks any real depth (it's no Chained Echoes, that's for sure), and while the combat is fun, it can get a bit repetitive after a while, once you understand the mechanics. Chained Echoes is a game I will DEFINITELY replay at some point, but Sea of Stars will probably sit on my shelf for years until I decide to give it another go.
I think Serai provides the best gameplay utility while also having a good characterization! I really enjoyed using Resh’an as well, though it took me longer than I’d like to admit to figure out his perfect timings haha

I used her the least. Her transportation atk is ok, but her timed atk is harder and weaker than the moonerang. Her normal atk is weak as well.

I think you put Serai too low. I mean, her disorient ability is too op tbh. There were many bosses which I never had the chance of seeing their special because of her lol
Reshans ultimate move and Serais disorient made them the 2 most useful characters. Garl is the least useful since his charged attacks never do anything and can only heal 1 person making reshan a better healer. Bst is slightly more viable than garl
B'st is pretty good. Very high dmg on his spell and good normal attack.
Sarai IS THE BEST CHARACTER OF THE GAME WHAT THE HELLLLLLLL IS THAT HAHAHA! The delay on her spell is the best spell in the whole game. You can litteraly shutdown a boss forever.
Rashan is pretty bad but can do 3 hit of arcane with his spell or poison+arcane with empowered autoattack so you use it to break and his ult does it all.
Garl is good when you get it with his heal but it falls off really hard after. Probable the worst character.
Zale and Valere are OP. Zale is the best damage dealer and his 3 point combo that do a fire tornado is the most damaging thing in the game. Valere is a powerhouse, shield + heal and heavy magic damage with the bouncing thing.
I would say, for me:
1) Sarai (utility on steroid)
2) Zale (dmg god)
3) Valere (versatibility = damage, good break option, nice shield+heal spell. Maybe number 2 not sure
4) Rashan for breaking shield and best ult
5) B'st (solo damage and autoattack damage)
6) Garl (ok solo damage and ok healing (fall off hard)
Serai made boss fights trivial. They hardly ever got to use any special moves.

For the longest time, I thought that Reshan was useless--then I started to actually use him. As frustrating as he is for the story, his skills in battle are unquestionable. Also, you can just call Zale and Valere "Gold Cardboard" and "Silver Cardboard". It's the same thing.

I 100% the game and found that near the end all of the characters pretty much had the same stats. I used most all of them equally

Sorry but... as soon as i got Serai, i nearly never used Garl again. Garl is probably the most beloved Charakter in the game. But in combat i prefer Serai. Her Delay is absolutley essential in late game if you don't want to get hit by every special attack of a boss. Stats are not everything. I think Resh'an is better than her in general, but i really don't wanna miss Serai in combat. Of course, everyone has a diffrent playstyle and uses diffrent partymembers.

The thing this video tells me is that you can love the game the same as someone else - and yet it can be for completely different reasons! Serai #1 for me, high DPS - that portal shiv is a one hitter quitter.

I really like Serai honestly but fair list.
Garl just annoyed the hell out of me. Ya he's a loveable character but the more I play Sea of Stars the worse the writing comes off. It's just so on the nose and forced. With Garl's story i felt almost nothing.
I love your videos but I have to disagree with the list. In particular putting Serai near the bottom. Disorient is hands down the best skill in the game. Getting 2 extra turns to break locks can be the difference between eating a boss''s ultimate attack and keeping them from ever doing anything the entire battle.
My personal list would probably be Garl (he's still my fave and I use him regardless) < B'st < Reshaan < Zale < Valere < Serai in terms of sheer mechanical usefulness.
Phase Shv is great for one-shotting enemies I have found since getting Serai. With Tactian's Mettle, Double Dare, and Double Edge Relics active I'm really having to keep on my toes. Garl's so far a bottom tier character for me cause I am having to always wait for his single heal Nourish. Valerie and Zale about equal to me so far with this game obviously trying to make Zale your magic dealing tank and Valerie an attacker with a safety net.

I like Garl as a character but I feel like the game forces you to like him as the other characters are somewhat bland
Disorient alone makes Serai Top 3. The game became too easy after i abused Disorient and her combo with rshan.v

Honestly I agree with this list but zales by far my favorite character his stats to me seem ass backwards he has less mp but a better magic attack?
Like idk I thought he should have had more mp and a more offensive kit while I would say valerie should have been more like zales kit rn while keeping her stats currently or needing her mp

I found serai way more useful than reshan. I never used Reshan, but the least serai can delay bosses.
Imo I agree with your list but I put Serei above Garl even though every playable character is between decent to amazing even B'st.
Really wish this game wasnt so boring.
But, Serai is a lot more useful than this review is making her out to be.

I’m a JRPG fanatic. I love them almost as much as I love Phil Collins.
I could NOT get into this game. It was such a slowwww slog in the beginning. I keep dropping it after 2 or 3 hours. I hear it picks up and gets good around hour 4ish when they meet the pirates or something. But I just cannot keep pushing. I dunno, maybe it’s just JRPG burnout. Guess I’ll have to come back to it later and not directly after i binged games like Chained Echoes and Breath of Fire on GBA 🤷♂️
I finished the game, and overall enjoyed it, but.... The story is pretty simple, and lacks any real depth (it's no Chained Echoes, that's for sure), and while the combat is fun, it can get a bit repetitive after a while, once you understand the mechanics. Chained Echoes is a game I will DEFINITELY replay at some point, but Sea of Stars will probably sit on my shelf for years until I decide to give it another go.

I think Serai provides the best gameplay utility while also having a good characterization! I really enjoyed using Resh’an as well, though it took me longer than I’d like to admit to figure out his perfect timings haha
