  • I wanted to put a video out showing the simplicity of Honda motors and what will happen if you neglect your oil system or just by old age. I started to tear this motor down to nothing in order to put in all new seals and bearings.

    Im currently doing an h22a turbo ek build so i really appreciate you doing a detailed teardown as this is my first actual "motor" project. I subbed too. Looking forward to these videos man, theyre gonna be a huge help!

      Glad the videos are useful! I actually finished the motor last year with a different block and then found out the SH trans was already broken when I started the car. So now I have a base swap and everything works great lol

    Old age doesn't matter one bit if the motor is maintained properly. I've driven Honda's my entire life (well since age 13 so 32 years) and I've owned multiple Preludes and currently own a 1990 Si 4WS . I've seen motors with over 700k miles that look and run awesome because the owner always performed the recommended maintenance using Honda fluid. Then I've also seen Honda's with less than 100k and the motor is knocking with a transmission that grinds going into gear, slips out of gear, missing gears, etc... every time the owners would say that they either neglected the routine maintenance and/or used non Honda fluids. Personally i drove a 1988 Prelude 4WS with well over 300k miles (odometer stopped running at 310k) and i put well over another 200k to 300k miles driving about 300 miles per day as a courier. After i had replaced multiple seals and hoses and did a few minor things, the lude didn't leak a drop of oil and made almost 30mpg highway. It was also a 4 speed automatic and the fastest I've driven it was almost 140 mph down PCH in Huntington beach one night! Luckily the person i bought it from always changed the oil and preformed routine maintenance. Most people neglect it because it costs allot of money but it is worth it in the long run

    Awesome vid! I wish I had the space, tools, and skill to tear an engine apart. My 97 SH that I've had for 21 yrs died on the freeway. She's stock, 160k miles and really really hoping it's just a slipped timing belt or head gasket, but how knows... I might have to finally let her go if the repair cost is too high.

    I just took girdle off h22 for the first time today and I had to use a brass drift and 2lb hammer to knock it up and free the dowels. Used the same drift and hammer to massage the back of the oil pump where main cap 1 WOULD have been to push the crank snout timing pulley off. 1994 h22a1 to 1996 h22a1 spec for the bb2 h23a1 to h22a1 conversion. Re ring with hastings new king std bearings arp head studs VITON valve seals supertech keepers relap valves exedy clutch m2f4 matching trans. All rock auto seals and replacement parts not already listed.
    Brm 600 grit hone. Budget build... can't spent 1000 just to have a proper hone performed. I'm sorry it's not happening. If there's a CHANCE I can do it myself for 1/2 cost I will always try.

      Yeah I got carried away and forgot to film it lol. The bolts in these are always tough to get loose so there's an "OEM Tools" honda crank bolt tool to use. I had 2 big breaker bars (to tool and bolt) and used all my weight in opposite directions

    Am I able to rebuild the engine if a rod broke and some internal piece of the block cracked?

    • @BMcGuinness
      @BMcGuinness  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say it's probably not a safe build if any part of the block cracked after that. A rod breaking usually puts a ton of stress on the crank and all the parts connecting. Best bet is see what a machine shop says, they might be able to weld repair and check clearances
