I'm getting storm fatigue at this point, many sleepless nights in the Midwest in the last few months. Prayers for the families that have lost loved ones. 😢
The same can happen in California, we have almost all natural disasters. Mother Nature does not discriminate. We have to help those in need and work as a community to help rebuild.
Hurricanes, flooding and fires happen yearly in places with high home insurance, we typically don't get this many tornadoes in Iowa. This year is probably the most ever reported on record.
I'm 35 years old. Lived in Iowa my whole life. Never seen a tornado. Neither has either of my parents nor any of my grandparents nor any of my siblings or any of my cousins. The town I grew up in nor the one I live in now has ever been hit by a tornado in the 160+ years they have existed. That would be pretty silly if houses were cheaper because of something that has never happened. That's like saying houses here are cheaper because of asteroids or planes falling out of the sky. I would imagine your house is just as likely if not more so to get wiped out as mine.
Yes I agree I'm sick of dealing with storms at this point I'm fatigued I see why California is so expensive the weather out there is beautiful I went there on vacay recently wish I could live there

I am not from the United States, where I live there are no tornadoes. What I don't understand, is why in places where the risk of being hit by tornadoes is almost 100%, there is no legislature to disallow constructing with materials like timber! Like, I understand it's cheaper, but for god's sake...
Because the people who live in these areas can't afford homes built from stronger materials. Also the chance of getting hit by a tornado is insanely rare. There may be 1000+ of them a year in the US, but the US is a giant country so there is no point in building every house to EF5 standards.
A lot of the homes in rural Iowa have been there a long time as they are small farming communities. In addition, with the exception of the Parkersburg tornado, I don't recall the State getting direct hits as much as it has the past few years. I've lived in Des Moines my entire life, just 2 miles outside of Pleasant Hill. The brief touchdown there earlier this month was the first I can remember other than an occasional straight-line winds. It would seem the weather patterns are changing though, so may need to adapt for sure. Would be nice, outside of the cost.
Timber is not the problem and homes are not just made out of timber alone. For being a relatively lightweight building material, wood outperforms even steel when it comes to breaking length (or self-support length). Simply put, it can support its own weight better, which allows for larger spaces and fewer necessary supports in some building designs. Tornados tear through anything in its path. The solution is making homes and buildings tornado proof by designing with more curvature with exterior walls and windows that's impact resistant.
And for God's sake, why didn't we put any basements in any of the new schools we've built in the last 3-5 decades? I still have yet to get an answer to this question.
I almost got flipped on I 35 while delivering packages it’s been rough specially after getting hit by an ef3 tornado in 2018 and a derecho 2 year laters. I just can’t catch a break😡

Exactly, I’m in Texas and knew that whole region needed to prepare for possible tornadoes. If you ignore main stream media and pay attention to meteorologists on TH-cam you’re much more prepared for typical bad weather this time of year.
I agree. I live in Europe and even here they mentioned the risk. In the age of online weather apps, saying you had no idea storm was coming? It’s on you
These people are not given proper warning, EVEN Houston Tx got a down played warning until an alert came 10 minutes before the storm. Local news was saying one things while I was receiving the true deal from youtuber Max Velocity which warned 6 hours prior to storm. This is nothing norm comparing to previous years. and the assigned tornado alley has expanded new regions
We didn't know where it was going to go, and it was traveling at 85mph, even the warnings from the Ryan Hall channel and their chasers couldn't keep up with it. A few were also heavily rain-wrapped.
The day before can’t predict a tornado. Those things can turn in a second. You can’t stop your entire life the whole spring season. There’s so many warnings all the time.
Why aren't houses built like domes there? I feel like it's quite possible to build solid domes that would just be cleaned off by a direct hit from a tornado.
Absolutely nothing. If you care to read the Wikipedia article about it, you'll see it is just a scientific instrument that has nothing to do with weather; it was built in 1993. I hope you know that there were tornadoes before. Also, Russia and Norway have similar devices, and you know they are not plagued by tornadoes. If anything this is the consequence of having thrown tons of CO2 to the atmosphere for over a century: the climate changed, weather follows suite. That's why all those people are protesting, for stopping the pollution, that the change doesn't worsen, that it doesn't become irreversible. I highly recommend you to google 'climate change causes - effects.' Good luck ✌
