    All you needed to buy were $2 muffler bracket U-bolts from the auto store. That would have solved the problem of the gate not being "clean" and it would have allowed you to position the gate bracket arm anywhere you like. Setting the open limit anywhere other than the fully retracted position puts undue stress on the arm. That may be why you keep breaking them.

    • @machaf
      @machaf ปีที่แล้ว

      You seem like the Ghost control cooperate shill that everyone's talking about...If that arm can't take the gate in anything but fully retracted position, I have to wonder how that garage works in the fully closed position with the wind... Shows ur an amateur talking about using U-bolts....lmao ..thats gotta be a joke.

    First gate opener I bought was mighty mule. Replaced 3 different units over a couple of years.. started researching and found the ghost controls opener and couldn't be happier. Customer service is great. Never had a problem asking questions and troubleshooting or getting accessories

    I have a Mighty Mule FM500 that I installed about 17 years ago that still works. I had to recently open up the arm to tight the screws that hold the motor in place but other than that this thing has been rock solid.

    Great video, just wanted to say I've had a lot of gates fatigue do to drilling throughout the gate tubes. I have had better luck with using U bolts and spot welding or JB welting the U bolts nut in place for security. Also I have started putting the battery in an electrical box as thieves love country gate openers and batteries. Thx for the review.

      Thank you.
      I appreciate the thought on the drilling. It was already drilled through when I moved in so nothing I can do accept reinforce it now. Luckily we do not have a theft problem around here but an electrical box is a good idea.

    Clearly tells you on the advertising on Amazon that you need additional parts for larger tube Gates or anything but a post also you manually adjust the arm by screwing it out to your connection point then you can set your limit also yes the holes are tight to get the wiring through and that is done by design it helps to keep critters out of your box but everything does fit and you do not have to strip the wires back at all everything is perfectly stripped and it's right into the connection point

    Good video as always. I have had my mighty mule 1st one lasted 3 years my own fault did not clear snow and blew it out. I then got a XL pro model and so far over 10 years. Mine is on a galvanized fence 10’ gate and I open and close so many times it’s like a traffic light. I don’t use solar as I ran electrical. We love our unit. I looked at other professional systems but this works fine. All in all 20 yrs using mighty mule. Oh mine locks the gate too added that feature later. My only issue is I’m on a slope so I have to clear snow to make sure I don’t stress the system.

    I put in a Ghost Control opener 2 years ago. After a bunch of internet research I wound up going directly to Ghost Controls and telling them my setup. They designed the entire system so it was pretty easy. It's tight putting all those cords in for sure. I guess that's necessary to keep the unit waterproof. I installed a new 6x6 post after I ordered the gate.
    I did buy the locking system as an extra and that took a little work.
    I really wish they had an app so I could open it with my phone. We have keypads on both sides of the gate.
    There is a light that indicates the amount of charge.
    I have had to make slight adjustments on two occasions.
    Customer service was great.

      You can purchase some accessories that wire into these openers that give you smartphone controls. Iblue is one and pal control is another. The pal control is cellular so it requires a cell account at $165 a year. Pal also has a Bluetooth model with no monthly fee.
      Also check out vizpin. That’s a great system for phone controls.

    Installed a Ghost recently also. Not plug and play on a 4x4 steel post either. Had to grind and modify the post bracket and make two mounting arms for the unit to have proper clearance. Also using a separate solar charger controller that has lights and better float charging control that should increase battery life. Installed a Cartell CP4 vehicle exit sensor also.
    Ghost customer service was available but could not provide any hardware to make the install easier.I hope it lasts for many years.

    Tinning the Wires(Soldering Ends of Strands)Works Well. Ferules may not be good with Multiple wires. May need to Seperate Wires for Testing.

    Drip loops. You need to put drip loops on every wire coming out of your controller. This forces rain water to drip off of the bottom of the loop in the wire so that is doesn't run up the wire and into the controller. Installing drip loops is an old telephone lineman trick. You simply make a circular look in your wire, put your wire tie at the top of the loop so as to have a clean wire surface at the bottom of the loop in order for water to drip off of the wire. Yes, you can have a sealed gasket entry on your devices but, often that seal will deteriorate over time and allow water in. The drip loop will give that extra insurance that you have no water intrusion on any outdoor wiring installation.

      I've had Mighty Mules for about twenty years and have the same issue with lightning. My latest Mighty Mule is on a solar charger, the gate is connected to a ground rod, and Saturday night, a strike about 120 yards away, killed the opener. The ground rod didn't seem to make a difference. The former opener took a direct hit last year and I found it in pieces near the gate. Other than lightning, mine have held up good.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily. I would plan out how the whole thing will be built ahead of time including the positioning of the opener on the tube gate (or other gate). That will make the whole build go smoothly.

  • @philipwilkins3812
    @philipwilkins3812 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Watching this video was somewhat informative. Just about all the issues of installation would be solved by hiring a professional for a day to install this. Frankly some homeowners will solve many things themselves.
    Having a clean round post is fairly easy with a 4.5in grinder.
    A little fabrication with a saw and welder will get you past the brackets.
    Adding another strains relief bushing is easy enough with a proper hole saw and grommet.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do not have access to a welder or grinder at the far reaches of my property as there is no electricity there. Otherwise, this video would have been different. It is still mainly about a comparison of the two brands. Ghost has performed perfectly. Mighty Mule is terrible.

    I have a 16’ custom swing gate for my driveway and it probably weighs 300 lbs and the only problem I’ve had with ghost was when my gate got struck by lightning. They said they don’t cover lightning strike with the warranty specifically but they do cover one new free motherboard so they sent it and it’s fixed. Still going strong. Irritating you can’t hook it up to built in vehicle garage door opener buttons but not that big of a deal. Was told by a gate and fence building company to not mess with mighty mule and I’m happy I went with ghost overall. Good choice.

    I've had a mighty mule for about 4 years now. My main issue is it "jamming" with wind thinking it has an obstruction. I hate that you can't override the disabled app once it jams. We use the app every day for family to come in and out on their own instead of buying 10 remotes for everyone.
    The resistance is turned to high but any slight wind jams it. Mighty mule tech support claims my gate is too light and the opener is meant for a heavier gate. I have the 571. I got it because the gate gets opened one to two dozen times a day and when I first bought it I was told the 371 wasn't meant for more than 6-10 a day. Tech support claims the 571 is meant for an 800-900lb gate. But then they say it's not a commercial opener. What residential gate weights 800lbs? Even custom built gates only weigh 2-400 lbs.
    The only way for me to get 800 lbs is to use drilling pipe with concrete dried inside. My fence post isn't going to support an 800lb gate and the hinges will have a massive amount on them considering the leverage. I really think mm tech support is just reading notes and don't really know hands on experience.
    Other than the jamming, the occasional issue of losing wifi connection is annoying. The transmitter is located 500 ft away, which is way closer than their claimed max 1/2 mile connectivity. Straight shot, no trees, buildings, or anything in the way.
    Overall, the mighty mule was a lot cheaper installing it myself than the $10-12k qoute I got from fence companies(including the gate). I have about $800 in the gate, fence, opener, wifi stuff, etc. Have no clue why people pay 10-12k for what I did in two days myself.

    Do your self a favor and invest in a welder. Harbor freight fluxcore welder(the green one)works great! You can have all the gear(helmet,gloves and the head bonnet)under $300. I've had one for years and it is way handier than you'd ever imagine . Wouldn't trust the welds with my life but for trivial things like trailers,lawn mowers,tractors oh and gates! Do your homework and research on ghosts controls website. This is a DIY gate opener. Don't give ghosts controls a strike because you bought it off Walmart website and Walmart didn't link you to ghosts controls website that tells you everything like you need different brackets for different gates.
    I only say this because I just bought a ghosts controls opener myself a few days ago. I researched the product on ghosts controls website and learned everything about it then researched other websites like Home Depot, Lowes etc to see if it was cheaper. Sounds to me like you didn't do your due diligence and simply bought it from the cheapest website, then you get frustrated when you didn't have everything you needed to complete the job.
