    Welp, Fiveman is finally coming to DVD! Let's hope we get more Sentai DVDs on a regular basis from now on.

    • @MGMVE
      @MGMVE 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If we do, it will only be because shout worked with Toei for the license of another season. Getting Fiveman, the least popular season in japan, means nothing as far as future seasons.
      Sentai Nerds need to get this through their heads. Beggars can't be choosers here. You either get the series they come out with or you don't .Sentai DVDs by themselves are for nothing but a niche audience, not the general public. Sentai Fans are niche whether they see it or not.
      As soon as Fiveman was announced you have a lot of nerds demanding this to be on bluray, better picture quality. Get real, Fiveman aired in the early 90s. Standard Definition was the common back then. Toei was not going back to put their old seasons in HD. Especially when Super Sentai has been declining in popularity in Japan. Kamen Rider gets a lot more attention and love because its very popular over there.
      Another thing, fans HAS to realize. popular Seasons like Abaranger, and Dekaranger are not going to get licensed for cheap.
      One more thing you have to consider Sentai did start airing certain series in HD around Shinkenger. I guarantee you the cost to bring those to America would be exceptionally high. They aired Boukenger in wide screen. Blurays for Seasons didn't start until they released the Shinkenger season.

    I teased Fiveman in March of 2019 (unaware that it would come out 3 1/2 years later...) but that should have told everyone that Shout! had intended to continue releases, and something happened. Hopefully that's all figured out now and the DVDs will continue.

      @@MGMVE Maybe you could help shed some light on this. If you know we're the world's first and longest running channel of our kind, and have never once in our history posted misinformation (and work absurdly hard for our viewers) what made you think we'd suddenly change, and pick Fiveman to lie or mislead about? How would that even get us attention? Fiveman is not a popular search term for our channel, and I didn't even name it on the channel or in the tags. That would have been a fairly worthless thing to do for us to get views. Animation is what drives the channel, not quick news videos with a blurred image of a pre-Power Rangers DVD set. The comment you're responding to clearly states I did not know it would take that long, and now you can safely assume it had something to do with Hasbro. I don't know what to make of your comment when the "never official" set is up for pre-order, using the very same box art I teased. So, not a lot of sense is being made here, but you seem to speak for a lot of people. Why is this a thing people think when it disagrees with observable reality? We're not a new channel. 15 years of facts and high quality content. If you want to clickbait, use Mighty Morphin.

  • @Spindash54
    @Spindash54 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    In a weird sense with the separate licensing, it's a little poetic, if ironic, that the last modern series we got was Hurricanger. If things progressed the way it was going, Abaranger would've been the first series with the events of the movie being referenced in the main series. I wonder if they would've bothered getting those movie rights for continuity, or just not bothered.

    Too bad Toei has next to no interest in licensing a bunch of their shows. I'd love a shelf of official Kamen Rider Blu Rays, or even more obscure stuff like Blue Swat. Instead, I get to see the first 2 episodes of any show on TH-cam, then nothing.

As for Metal Hero, Discotek Media is releasing Space Sheriff Gavan in October, Preorders are up on RightStufAnime right now. So supporting those releases will hopefully lead to more Metal Hero. There needs to be a well thought out vision. Physical media expectations in the West =/= the East where most media is rented and super expensive to buy. This was just passive income from Toei. If we can get Power Rangers back up and running, Hasbro could spearhead a team to get these up and going, remastered and complete with everything to justify price tags. Also remember that Ishimori Pro is technically different than Toei. Toei licenses Goranger and JAKQ from them.

    Interesting video with a cool perspective! Didn't know the DVDs had such sub-par qualities, that's really bizarre- but less-so than the situation Shout is in trying to get them out. I had my eye on them, but only dipped in when they branched to Rider and released Kuuga. The straightforward production style with little-to-no extras for $50 felt a bit hard to swallow, but such an eventful release(and for one of my favorite series) couldn't go unsupported. You mention about some people not getting these sets initially when they first came out.
    I was one of them, but for a different reason. None of these sets got an official release outside of North America (in fact, the only Shout Factory sets relating to PR/Sentai we got here in the UK was MMPR under Manga UK) and I was still iffy about importing back then. The accessibility of the Ultraman Blu-Rays being region free got me more confident in doing so so I've slowly been picking up the Sentai DVDs, but as you mentioned in the video, the pricing means it is going to be slow.

    @EndingAbyss165 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The only way I could ever see Sentai releases coming back is if Shout brings over Gokaiger and that does really well and they get better distribution and quality subs along with blu-ray. Still, considering just how popular Gokaiger is in Japan it might even be more expensive the other series meaning sales would need to be higher to even make it worth it. Hell even if Gokaiger did well the only other series I could see them wanting to bring over are Kyoryuger, ToQger, and MAYBE Kyuranger as those are popular amongst the Toku fans in western counties. In all honesty I think Hurricanger must have bombed really hard in sales for them to not want them to bring over more along with things like licensing. Other than that I think Sentai's future in the west is done for especially if PR starts doing it's own thing and stops adaptations.

For me the DVDs also kept coming out a little too quickly to keep up; Shout pumped out multiple sets spread out over a single year (with 2018 they put out 5 of the 12 sets). Maybe if Shout slowed down on the multi-year release of sets maybe sales would be better and we would still be getting sets released that would gradually transfer over to blu-ray discs as we get more of the newer seasons.

    I also feel like the release of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider licensed in the states is a big stab in the global fandom. Like the ease of access to fan subs gets taken away as the subbers tend to stop when licensed and the hoops going round to getting them imported. I did once contact the company manga who reproduced shouts mighty morphin in the UK if there was any plans for more rangers or sentai and it was just a blunt no, clearly no market here :(

      That’s definitely been a major issue with the licensing of Toku shows with Sentai, Rider and Ultra. @@Soundout12 aye its a shame, alot of people are anti my views on it, but I recall when mighty morphin first got its german release and everyone was saying to hiy them to support further official releases, then the set in the states came out same again, by the time of its UK release everyone that wanted mighty morphin already had it and in some cases multiple times, it's no wonder it failed here. Ah well lets see what the future brings, especially now with fan subs being back released in the shadows, and the blu ray steaming ways of newer stuff. I think you raise a good point in the video about if they do ever put sentai on dvd again it wont hit the same, and the licensing point of view seems about right. Although I was always under the impression the masters Shout used for Sentai where the copies Saban got to make power rangers which is why the release quality is different compared to the Japanese dvds.

    Also there is another reason for that- if you look at the picture quality of the DVDs we got as opposed to the Toei domestic releases in Japan, based on my experience from at least the Megaranger one we got, is the picture quality feels like it was ripped out from the Toei Channel broadcasts of the shows (i.e. the strong lights gets darkened or blurred) like it's the best we'll ever get.
    The picture quality is also to dissuade Japanese buyers from reverse importing them despite the difference in region code (there's a small chance Japanese users unlocked their DVD players to play Region 1 disks), despite the good price we have. In Japan you have to pay the same price we have here for 3 to 4 episodes per volume.

    I know this adds to more problems for Shout Factory but is not the main problem is that Shout Factory now owns all the rights to ALF. The sitcom, the two animated shows, The odd talk show ALF did on TV Land, and the made-for-TV film "Project ALF." $60 is a high price point for US consumers, but considering that Japan's home video market is significantly more expensive, it's a good deal by comparison. Ultimately, I think slumping sales is why Shout Factory decided to pump the brakes on DVD Super Sentai releases. I certainly hope they release more Kamen Rider on Blu-ray, Zero-One was a good start, but they should use the Blu-ray masters and not the broadcast masters for the US release. I think episodes 8 and 9, or there about, have horrific interlacing that's super distracting.

Abaranger through Gekiranger have inaccurate subs while Go-Onger onward have copied and pasted fansubs. I own the Gokaiger, Go-Busters and Kyoryuger sets and they have Overtime subs on them. I'll only get a bootleg if there's no official way to get a show on DVD or Blu Ray over here in the US and I asked Tsuyoshi Nonaka last Power Morphicon how Toei felt about Malaysia making bootleg DVD's of their shows and he said "We don't care. The set has no DNR or smooth filtering so every bit of noise is still there, though I noticed some weird reverberating issues on the 3rd episode it seems the later episodes have little to no issues at all. I think as age old fans we have to agree that this likely would look better in SD HD but with the cost of loosing the grain and filtering the stuff out it likely would not really look that different... it was filmed in some dark settings so stuff well just looks dark though I noticed most of the battle and fighting scenes when they use the Dino Buckler look even better than Saban's method of brightening up the footage to crazy levels also I know the subtitle issues are pretty bad with weird changes to certain names and stuff but at the end of the day it's great to have a physical release of my all time fave series in it's original unaltered format at long last especially as the DVD set once went out of print and is now available once again.. oh nice explanation on the releases btw ^^

    There are 15 years of Super Sentai before Power Rangers, none of which have a licensed US release.
    JN Production/Generation Kikaida got the Kikaida 3D movie with Kikaida boxed set but did not get Kamen Rider V3 movie with V3 set, or Inazuman 3D movie with Inazuman set. Apparently Toei dind't make them available.

      That's correct. I believe they got the Kikaida movie due to it airing in Hawaii during the show's run there
