- Today I take my film camera out for some landscape photography in Northumberland. I have a great location picked out, but is it the wrong time of year? I shoot with my Hasselblad 501cm and Kodak Ektar 100 film. I hope you enjoy this video.

That‘s so true. You know it all and then in the end while taking that picture you forget a tiny thing and then you are like: Oh man I forgot something. We just had that a few days ago while in the woods with a friend of mine. Both of us were a bit puzzled while driving back home.

Honestly, I think it's great to see your process, even when things don't turn out the way you wanted. I feel like too much of the content we see online ignores all our botched attempts, and discourages new artists that don't succeed every attempt. Cheers!

I love that you share the videos even if you´re not happy with the results. You have so many great images, and there will be more, but I follow this channel for the experience, the entertainment and your thoughts. I know what you are capable of and I take the good shots as a bonus. But the value of this channel is your honesty. Take that away and I beleive many of us will lose the interest. Very nice video. It shows that making great photographs is not guaranteed, but it can still be fun and useful. Can't wait to see footage from the place when you go back there in the autumn.
I very much enjoyed the video. You can never tell how a particular photography expedition is going to turn out but your point about having a catalogue or library of locations to return to was good to take on board. As a beginner I realise that photography is a lifelong learning journey. I can’t even imagine how complicated it must be to work with film. It is inspiring to get your insights and see that we are all on our own journey and can learn something every time we venture out with the camera.

Thomas, you are an exceptional photographer. Each of your vlogs makes up the "real life" of a professional landscape photographer. However, as much as anything else, your presentation style is a major contributor to your success. There is no need to feel a particular vlog needs an apology.

If you go back in the autumn then make sure to head along the 697. There’s a woodland there where half the trees turn orange/yellow and half stay green. It happens in a clear dividing line between the two. Would look superb from a drone eye view.

Thomas - I actually did enjoy this! Yes, it's another proof that photography is like a roller coaster. It's up and down, usually in short sequence. What counts is to keep trying. And btw, I love the last shot!
Loved the video, Thomas, and I think the final image is super, even with the flare. I was surprised how well the sky came out, from the video it seemed much too bright. I suppose a well coated lens helps when shooting straight into the sun.
I enjoyed the video. I myself spent most of yesterday afternoon and evening out taking pictures and doing a bit of hiking/exploring. I don't think I got any really great photos but I enjoyed myself and found a good place to put a trail camera when winter comes again.

There is such an important story in here about success and failure not being a black and white affair, reminding us that there are layers of experience and learning in everything we undertake. Love your videos man!
You really opened my eyes up to square shooting/cropping. I used to avoid it thinking it was to cliché because of Instagram but you've really helped me see how it can help control a scene/composition.
This video depicted reality - many more photo trips rarely pan out as hoped. Never apologize for a failed trip…it shows that it can happen to anyone, as it does!!
And like you said, chalk it up to a scouting trip. Those are invaluable to themselves!! I enjoyed this video…they always make me smile!

It's always appreciated that you show us the "other side" of the Photography side.
It can't always be epic landscapes, perfect conditions and breathtaking events.
You have said it many times and everybody that does photography - be it me as a hobbyist or you as a professional know, that the "journey" is always the goal.
You shouldn't go out for bangers - you should go out to go out and take a hike, a walk or a bike-ride and take your camera with you so you can hone your skills and keep motivated.
Thanks for reminding me of that and keep it up!

I do realize that your primary focus (pun intended) is photography and you might be disappointed with not getting a banger of an image but you have to remember that you are also a filmmaker and for us the video and the location and the B-roll and the drone footage all tell a story. Even if that story is just here is a wonderfully beautiful location that had abounding potential. Don't get me wrong I love your photography and your unique perspective on abstract landscape photos but I also really enjoy watching you hike around in lovely environments.
You're a storyteller, and the best stories have good and bad in them. It's a joy to go along on your journeys and to learn from you.

Amazing video as always Thomas! Had some problems with lens flares with my first analog canon now, we got used to shoot in crazy conditions with the newer lenses - coatings, technics and stuff has come so far its crazy! Thank you also for your honesty - I think this is what TH-cam and especially instagram needs a lot more of in order to motivate people. (Maybe buy a variable ND for you video xt-4 though - it could help with those crazy lighting condition you find yourself in). Greeting from rainy Germany!

Lovely photos, I've never really been a fan of square format photos as I'm so used to 3:2 but when you show the clips of looking through the viewfinder and the resulting images they look great.

Ektar 100 is my favorite film. Would love to see the autumn video shot on Ektar 100 as well.
I love lens flare - the ultimate giveaway of the details of the lens, number of elements and the number of aperture blades.
Can't wait to watch this after work! I'm probably going to Dolomites next week and I kinda' regret it is not autumn or spring, because of light, but I'll try to make the most of that trip and this video should be encouraging! :)

Ticks are some of the nastiest pests outdoors. Glad you only managed two so far! That’s great for how much time you spend out hiking and climbing. But, good topic to bring attention to so others know to watch for them. I like the second later image of the cliffs but agree that a fall image there would be exceptional. Looking forward to the return trip!

Thanks for sharing your experience of shooting film, along with the challenge of shooting into the light. You find some great locations and make the most of them in your compositions. Personally I use my cap, or hat, to shield the camera, it's a useful habit I've developed and it's become instinctive.
One benefit of wearing a hat/cap is that it works great as a hand held anti-flare device. I'm with you - I hate ticks. Thanks for sharing!
Fun! Today I learned that Britain has ferns that blanket open fields. I’ve only seen ferns in woods in the States where they are mostly in shade or cool rock crevices. I look forward to the reshoot in the Fall!

That area of Northumberland around Rothbury is beautiful. Looking forward to the Autumn version.
Several of my buddies that were in the army tell me that they used dog flea and tick collars to blouse their boots and it helped to keep the ticks off. Just don't let the collars stay in prolonged contact with your skin. I also carry a small 12 inch circular fold up reflector or a 12 inch square of light cardboard to use at a shade for my lenses.

I have never the feeling that I failed with my photography. Yes, off course I don’t like it when it happens, but for me it is really a learning process and know that I cannot shoot great images all the time. Only if I do shoot a great image, than It feels like winning an Olympic place

Showing errors isn't a negative, quite the opposite. Makes us mere mortals feel "normal". The images weren't that bad anyway Thomas. As people have said, its good to see why things haven't worked out. I personally dont just come to see great images, I come here to learn and things not going to plan is part of learning.

Being a Pedant I feel I need to point out that the “Ferns” looked more like Bracken, with Ferns the foliage all originates from one node at ground level, with Bracken the foliage grows from multiple nodes on the vertical stem.

I love these videos, especially when they include images of Northumberland, my home county. I started my climbing career on Northumberland sandstone in the 1970's, Simonside was the first crag I ever visited but I can't place this location, where is it please. My climbing days here in China are over now but I still enjoy my photography and I am still learning from excellent videos produced by people like yourself.
🇨🇦/🇺🇸... Hey there Thomas! Definitely ticks are no joke. I'm glad you are being safe! Some of my own health issues are attributed to "LATE STAGE" Lyme disease because I had run around in the woods FOR YEARS in Southern Ontario, in shorts, with little regard for insects. To those new to the concern, I recommend "Sawyer's Permethrin Insect Repellent for Clothing Gear and Tents". Regarding shooting into the sun... SOME mirrorless shooters have run into issues of weird image artifacts positioned where phase detection pixels are embedded in the sensor... a completely new phenomenon. Cheers!

Ticks... they are a perennial issue on the Canadian prairie... 20-30 after a walk in grass lands or scrub forest is a norm

Enjoyed watching you struggle with harsh lighting. My last two mornings of bird photography have been like that. One morning I got a fabulous silhouette shot of a great blue heron standing in the water with the sun and reflection coming from behind. And, I got a rim lighted shot of a small bird that was very successful. But, mostly, I dread going out with the camera on bright, sunny mornings. I did appreciate how you were able to capture some well saturated color in your shots. I shot film for 46 years and seldom got that kind of definition with that much atmospheric interference.
For us owners of Schmidt-Cassegrain (coffee can looking) telescopes we typically need dew shields attached to the front (it's like a very long lens hood). The high end ones are metal, but for your classical cheapskate they have flexible version with velcro (I think it's sheet ABS). "Cheap", rolls up nicely, very robust - I'm thinking something like that would make a decent lens flare shield for you. A little cross hobby thinking. :^)
