    Opress exemplifies Dooku’s saying that a master of the lightsaber dedicated to form and elegance might be defeated by a warrior who knows nothing of grace but everything about winning a fight

    And then K'kruhk goes into a deep healing trance, appearing dead, surviving with yet another near-death story under his belt to tell the younglings he teaches. Really man, dude has survived A LOT. ;-P This was an enjoyable matchup, it was cool and I liked your differing take on Opress, for variety's sake, compared to other matches I've seen featuring him. Nice logic and conclusions. Really starting to like Kkruhk through the versus videos I've seen him in.

    Personally I feel like K'kruhk trying to revive the clearly quite dead Oppo, while the more acclaimed healer A'sharad does not, is more of a character moment showing his difficulties with accepting death, than a sign of superior healing skill to A'sharad , although your interpretation is equally valid. Completely agree with the rest of the video, very well done.

      In Star Wars it's hard to know when someone is dead dead, or just mostly dead. K'kruhk was "killed " by grievous and was in fighting shape by order 66. Instead of him not accepting death, it could have been his own resolve that he wouldn't give up and leave someone for dead if they could be saved (How did he get off that planet after grievous took his saber? The clones didn't take his body with them.) I'm sure he would put in some extra effort in the slim chance he might save oppo.

The legacy era “Sith” and Jedi are not on the same level as their older counterparts save Cade and Krayt. Shado Vao may be on Fisto’s level as a swordsman, but that’s about it. Fisto was noted as one of the best swordsmen in the Jedi order during a time when the galaxy was filled to the brim with swordmasters and powerful force users, so that’s sayin something.. I don’t think she would be able to handle his onslaught. When I saw this pop up, I grinned like a kid on Christmas and I wasn't disappointed with the results. Also, I agree with the majority's opinion on Savage Oppress. He was nothing more but a disappointing character that was nothing more but to propaganda to Maul's return (which I have mixed feelings about) and could have been built up as a serious threat in the show and maybe they could have had him be something of a rival to Ahsoka similar to the way of the feud between Anakin and Ventress or Obi-Wan and Durge.
    Keep up the good work!
    Also, you did the same mistake that Jensaarai did in his Warb Null vs. K'Kruhk....
    You forgot about K'Kruhk's hat in your assessment.

      savage deserved better. I liked the clone wars show, as it's one of the best star wars media (in my opinion) since legends, but yeah, he was kind of disappointing. Not because of maul's return, because I felt that enhanced his character, but because as maul's sidekick. I don't disagree with his death and sendoff, as it fits perfectly and sidious wanted to eliminate the threat that was maul and savage as befitting with the sith rule of two, but he should have been handled better.

Extraordinary editing and incredible analysis of both characters (which is saying a lot considering the fact that your editing and analysis' are always phenomenal, but this video manages to outdo your previous works). I'm convinced that this video will be the new VS series gold standard for many years to come. IMO; however, K'Kruhk wins by his hat alone- 11/10 times. SciFi Soup wot the hell he was just a brute who was barely trained in ways of the force or lightsaber combat so many people would have him for brunch. I enjoyed seeing more of Dathomir and his part in the clone wars but he's only got as far having Maul with him. Let's not forget he is only apprentices apprentice basically ie. Ventress had him under a spell who was not even apprentice but sith acolyte to Tyranus and then maul who now stood alone but was apprentice to Sidious who was still serving Plagueis and wasn't trained to be a proper Sith Lord but more as assassin. Granted Maul had moved away from that but still didn't have skills like sith lightening and seems to have in a sense basic force abilities.

Whenever I disagree with other "council forcecast" folks on matters like these I try to liken it to sending your nearest and dearest into confrontations they're just not prepared for. I'm pretty indifferent to Savage. I love K'kruhk. You're right about that. he was a very powerful character (if i can even call him a character) but i feel they demonstraited his power in the wrong way. Like killing Adi Galiia. I think they just thought that the only way to convey power is to have him kill someone. they should have developed his character more. Maybe go indepth into his zabrak culture and how they think, and their battle tactics.

    Very, very good as always. Anyway I have checked out SciFi's channel and while I agree with almost none of his verdicts (he's unfortunatly only made like 4 anyway), he is a very good analyst and presenter. As far as this video, I came in with almost 50/50 opinions, but leaning slightly to Savage. I agree with the analysis, for the most part, but am somewhat confused as to why you gave K'kruhk a slight strength edge. I don't remember him showing any notable showings of strength that put them on par with Savage, and you didn't mention any. That's really my only complainant. Pleas keep up the good work.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't give him an edge in terms of strength. I theorized (very loosely) that he may be a bit stronger. But based on his base nature (Whipids are enormously strong) and his ability to use the Force to enhance his natural abilities, he is likely just as strong as Savage is. And although I can't point to a list of feats to describe this more thoroughly, I maintain that the way K'kruhk has managed to defeat or contend with the majority of his lightsaber wielding adversaries has owed somewhat to his ability to outmatch their physical strength. He matched Grievous' blows with a single handed grip and physically pummeled Quinlan Vos only losing the contest when Vos resorted to using the Force. I don't necessarily believe that K'kruhk is stronger than Savage. But nothing suggests to me that he's weaker and I'm saying his upper limit may be a bit above Savage's own. That really shouldn't be seen as anything more than speculation. Forgive the length of this, but it's the second time I've explained this on this page.

In all honesty GreyJedi91, I thought this would be K'Kruhk's fight but you were very objective of both characters and it shows the potential of Savage Opress had TCW done more with his character. There's another point I'd like to make concerning their physiology that I think is overlooked and (to me) directly relates to K'kruhk's survival on Hypori. Whiphids have a layer of blubbler and fur that they use to protect themselves from the elements of their homeworld, but these two qualities have combat applications as well. Historically speaking (as I understand such things as I'm not an expert) Swordsmen tended to wear large baggy clothing as a way of obfuscating the exact dimensions of their body. This gave them an advantage in combat by making their body more difficult to hit. This is most clearly seen in traditional Japanese clothing where samurai are shown wearing clothes that appear to be several sizes too large on them, but it can also be seen in the puffy shirts of fencers and in other places. It's probably also why Jedi wear robes as opposed to form fitting armor (among other reasons). K'kruhk's layer of fur acts in a similar manner. In his robes the fur would push against the fabric (which is already loose) adding maybe another inch to his perceived size. An inch that if struck wouldn't do any damage. Out of his clothes his fur still performs this function (though perhaps less effectively). Savage Opress has no such advantage. With his armor he's trading knowledge of his body's dimensions for damage resistance. Against blasters this works. Against a lightsaber he lost an arm (though given the way he was hit that was probably going to happen anyway).
    As for the blubber it also functions in a similar manner. Historically fighters with a layer of fat had an advantage over other combatants in that the fat acted as a buffer absorbing blunt strikes and as a way to take non-debilitating damage from bladed weapons. A blade (whether metal or energy) passing through the layer of fat would hurt but because it isn't cutting the muscle the fighter is able to continue fighting (or at least make a hasty retreat to quickly recover with some stitches). With K'kruhk this means he has a way of absorbing some of the strike from a Telekinetic attack while at the same time he's able to take a blow to the abdomen that would likely kill one without this protection. Again Savage has no such advantage. He is built like a brick wall and against blunt physical strikes that is enough but if he were struck by even a light hit from a lightsaber that limb would be incapacitated (like Obi-Wan in Attack of the Clones).

    GreyJedi91... this video solidified you as the best verses series video maker in my opinion. I like how your honesty in your analysis transcends your personal bias which I see few video makers accomplish. It was clear you love K'Kruk as a character but recognized Savage Opress' ability despite lack of enthusiasm for him. I loved this video and agree with the outcome. Furthermore, I have to say that I follow the whole council but your voice is the BEST. Your tone and flow are mesmerizing. Fantastic story teller! Would love to have more videos from you. I really like Evan Nova's "The Story Of" videos. Its nice to have a 40 minute complete story on a single character to listen to while driving or late at night. Would also like to see you pit Darth Vader vs a bunch of different Jedi. My personal perspective on power of characters is that I place George Lucas' personal quotes and his actual intent (hard to discern) higher than lore information. I believe it was always his intent to have Luke and Anakin as the most powerful characters in Star Wars history, despite how other characters are depicted for our entertainment.

    I do wish to bring something up at 30:26
    While landing a kick and stunning General Grievous would normally be an impressive feat this is the 2006 Clone Wars T.V show we are talking about. Where General Grievous's power fluctuates from being undefeatable to being outclassed by Gungans. General Grievous in the 2006 show has no consistency to him, he is whatever the writers want him to be for the plot of the story. While I think Adi Gallia's defeat and, death at the hands of General Grievous within the EU to be a better representation of her skills along with General Grievous's own skill.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer her original death and his original representation. I don't see it as a more impressive display on her part though. The only point I make here is she is not so physically weak that her martial arts are guaranteed to fail against superhuman adversaries. This means Savage is likely more durable than TCW Grievous. I don't like TCW Grievous but I can hardly ignore him entirely either.

      Let me just say thank you for responding back to me. I just wanted to say I don't think it's right to use the 2006 General Grievous as a skill comparison when his own skill level fluctuates so massively from episode to episode. But, I do understand where you are coming from I just felt like expressing my sentiments towards using such a "wild" card of a character as the 2006 General Grievous as a skill benchmark.

    I'm actually quite fond of Savage. As a character, he was simple but fulfilled his purpose, and had a very solid voice actor playing him. I wish we got to see more of him as time went on. He should've survived and lived on without Maul, allowing him to grow as a individual.

    My goodness this is surprising. Right out of the Blue. Well time to watch and enjoy the amazing storytelling. But no way In a thousand years savage is gonna pull off a win like this unless it's padawan Ku'Kruk which it is I would think. Nope guess it's knight Ku'Kruk well anyway time to listen to this video looking forward to it.

    Ah... this was great. A breath of fresh air. I always look forward to your vids and this did not disappoint for EU appreciation or analytical depth.
    Though personally I would give the slightest of nods to K'kruhk here (partly because I'm tired of watching the poor dude lose versus matchups despite his obvious talent) it would be a virtual split decision. It's nice to see Savage get his due for a change. He may not be the most technically skilled or refined combatant, but that doesn't mean he is someone that you can safely underestimate and walk away from. Unless you're Sidious. :P

    I know this sounds ridiculous, but this a work of art. The music, pacing, storytelling, and analysis is amazingly on point. The only thing I don't agree with is Savage killing K'kruhk. Also, giving praise to versus series creators who deserve it is something I do greatly respect. The force ghost known as GreyJedi91 has came back from the dead and does not disappoint. If I could recommend a versus match, Clone Wars Greivous vs Clone Wars Vos? I cant stand what TCW did to both characters and I think it would be interesting to show just how much they characters and threat level were slammed.

    K'kruhk is in my top three favourite jedi but yeah I have to agree with you. I shall be over here making myself feel better with the fact Legacy K'kruhk would take it. I don't think Opress would have ever managed to get much better then he was at the time of his death due to his personality and the fact he'd gotten strong enough to kill a council member so he probably wouldn't have ever accepted he was still too weak to be even a threat to the top tier anyways amazing video! so glad you did this I loved every second of it dude

    In MMA and Tia kickboxing. Legs kicks are designed to slowly, but surely ware down your opponent. Eventually through sheer numbers the opponents legs will break down. I think Obi wan knew this, and that is why is continued to pound away a Savage's leg. It slowed Savage's movements, until finally Obi wan ended up in the prefect place to strike Savages knee in touch away he would tear his ACL.

      Thanks. I was inspired by Sci-Fi Soup's videos about him though had some very slight disagreement with some of his arguments. And Antoine certainly helped me hone in on what really differentiated Savage from his brother. Particularly Antoine had some interesting points to make about Shii-Cho as it relates to Juyo. Even though I don't like Opress as a character he's a decently powerful character. I'm always a little skeptical when anyone labels him as a master of any kind. He's got a basic skill set and he uses it like a club, but that doesn't make it ineffective.

    Love the video my friend. K'kruhk has always been a character that has fascinated me since first reading Schism back in the day. The flashback scene detailing his resentment of losing so many clone troopers in battle and the clones total selfless attitude towards the whole situation was always a scene I felt was very emotional. Would have to agree with the result though. Ive never been a big TCW fan, but Ive seen every episode from season 3 onwards once just about. Oppress always struck me as kind of a bland character but I never had outright problems with him like with Ashoka, the changes to Quinlan Vos' character or the Nightsisters themselves. I did think his origin was a bit stupid with the Nighsisters, and the retconning of Mauls original Zabrak heritage. I think Oppress could have been an intriguing figure if he was Mauls brother from Iridonia and not Dathomir but that is just me. I always kind of assumed that Oppress had a hidden greatness that he was never able to call on cue during his time in the limelight. I think given proper time to develop and with Maul's guidance he could have developed into a fierce dark side warrior with considerable power in the force. Not so sure about his actual lightsaber fighting though. Anyways, always a pleasure to hear your videos man ... take care!

    Building off Gallia's defeat at the hands of Oppress, the same could be said for the kick Savage landed on Plo Koon
    Plo had just landed a blow on Savage that would have outright debilitated other force users.
    I would think that Kenobi was attempting to disable Savage through the cumulative damage of his blows.
    Pretty certain K'kruhk just manipulated the controls to send the transport onto a dive. There's a quote from the writer supporting this

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I trimmed a considerable portion of my script since the video was already long. As a result I didn't mention much about the Plo Koon v s. Savage Opress incident. But as I'm using Plo Koon again relatively soon I'll have other opportunities to mention that.As to the point about manipulating the controls...that seems more like a pilot's only likely answer to explain what's going on when the ship starts immediately plowing into the ground (not aware of the Force manipulation of course) and seems a little at odds with "the Force is a powerful ally" to me. I think I just have a different interpretation of it. But fair enough.

    • @DB6195
      @DB6195 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      GreyJedi91 Awesome to hear! Can never have enough of my favorite Kel Dor
      The "Force is a powerful ally" has been used so broadly it can hardly be used as evidence like this. Especially since it has been used in the context of mind tricks to opening a door
      Besides I'm pretty sure the author himself puts it to bed
      *Despite that freedom, "Star Wars" and the associated stories take place in a firmly established universe, with its own physics, chemistry, and parameters. It's working within these rules that allows the conflict necessary for a story to take hold.
      "I have dealt with writers in the past who wanted to show Jedi using their Force powers to pull spaceships out of the sky, and that sort of thing -- feats that just seemed too powerful compared to the kinds of things we see Jedi do in the films," said Stradley. "But a smart Jedi, someone like K'Kruhk, might find a way to do it that doesn't require a great deal of, er, Force. You'll see."*
      -- www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=42779
      So with this in mind combined and the pilot's statements I think it's pretty conclusive

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      DB6195 Seems extremely shortsighted of him to do that. It literally shows K'kruhk exerting a lot of strain using both hands and he bows slightly as he slowly pulls the ship downward. In context with "the Force is a powerful ally" the last thing I would assume is that he just tilted the controls. Very little communication between author and artist and it would have done to put that in context outside of a speech bubble. Or to have K'kruhk explain that's what he had done afterward. You make a convincing argument...but the author did himself a disservice if that's not what he wanted people to see. Not that the amount of people who state something makes it true, but you're literally the first person I've run into to explain this. Everybody else talks about it in exactly the context Stradley apparently meant to avoid. "You'll see." he said. I don't think anybody who didn't read this article would see.

    I agree with your assessment, with Savage's physical power and unrelenting attack that actually gives him the victory in almost all of his duels. Because against most people he can blow through but put him against a muscle tank like himself and he's in trouble. Like put him up against Malgus, and I feel like he would be crushed. Put Savage against any being with near or equal physical strength and I feel like he would fall.

    To be honest, I don't really favor one over the other. I think your verdict makes sense, and you backed it up very well. However, I don't see this as the only likely outcome. Instead, I think your video demonstrates a realistic way for Savage to win, but I also see just as many ways for K'kruhk to win as well. Lastly, I think it's cool that plenty of people, most of whom I have subscribed to, were able to help you out with this matchup. I do hope you continue to do well, and may the Force be with you in working on your next video.

      The only difference between your view and mine is that I don't think K'kruhk has "just as many ways" to win as Savage. Though it is of course entirely possible. I just don't consider it probable. To me, K'kruhk's advantages are there, but in my view sort of slight whereas I consider Savage's singular aptitude with combative Force abilities to be quite distinct in this particular case. Thanks for sharing, and for encouraging civil discussion which is what I always like to see :)

  • @DarthWill3
    @DarthWill3 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    "Drawn-out and vicious." That's a pretty apt description of the fight. Very well researched and concluded, my friend.
    However, I feel that I must point out some things you may have neglected to attribute to Savage as a fighter:
    1. We should start with Mother Talzin's manifesto, _Wild Power_, which can be found in _Book of Sith: Secrets of the Dark Side_. It reflects much on the Nightbrothers and their shared martial training with the Nightsisters. Both are given the chance to prove themselves in the Crucible, where they must pass three Tests: the Tests of Fury, Night, and Elevation. Savage clearly passed all three before his transformation.
    2. That said, Savage is highly skilled in unarmed combat. We see him retain this skill during his fight with Embo; put a few dents in the bounty hunter's hat before kneeing him in the gut. This leads me to believe that he may have been a practitioner of both Shii-Cho _and_ Ataru, using lightsaber, feet, and fists in sequence.
    3. Previously, Savage had trouble minding his surroundings in a fight. This is best exampled when Jedi Master Salmara hurled a container of carbonite at him. Maul tried to warn his brother, but it was too little, too late: the brute just slashed at the container and he was instantly frozen.
    4. Despite that most unpleasant incident, Savage would learn from his mistake. On Tatooine, he telekinetically stopped a thrown knife from piercing Maul's head. This shows a remarkable degree of control and spacial awareness.
    5. Need I mention that Savage can just as easily snap your neck with just one hand if you get too close?
    6. According to Cin Drallig in _Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force_, _Cho Mai_ (the lightsaber mark of contact which involves cutting off an opponent's weapon hand), is "considered the mark of a superior lightsaber duelist." Savage demonstrates this while dismembering Padawan Tatsu in _The Sith Brothers_.
    7. Darth Tyranus sensed that Savage was growing stronger with each passing day. He considered him a threat both to him as well as to the Jedi. Boy, did he sound serious when saying that...
    Meanwhile, nice job! Looking forward to your next match-up.

    In my opinion I think savage should have been the one who survived the duel with palpitine and being the main character of son dathomir and later appearing in rebals. Maul should have died in tcw.

    What is the name of the song used for Savage's introduction? I know It's not Game of Thrones but sounds sexual and Valyrian enough to be.

    Yeah, this was a good one! Well done, as always. However, the real reason I came here was to address the comments below concerning a proposed v.s series match...Kao Cen Darach v.s Cin Drallig. A few people actually believe that Drallig would beat Darach? *smh* Funny

    Wouldn't a blaster resistant body armor also be at least partially resistant to lightsabers? They are both plasma weapons?

      Considering his severed arm and how Sidious skewered Opress...gonna have to go with a "no." on that one. I mean...maybe a very slight protection I guess...but so small it hardly matters.

      It's a difference of both intensity and sustained output. A blaster is applying energy for a fraction of a second, .001 seconds at most I'd guess, where a lightsaber is applying the same output continuously for the duration of the contact. Additionally, a blaster bolt just doesn't have the same energy as a lightsaber blade. Consider that we see common blaster rifles leave nothing more than scorch marks on most blast doors, where lightsabers are regularly thrust through them with minimal effort.

    I love k khruk so much I wish we saw him at least in the clone wars animated series or something and am hoping he is in one of the star wars films in the future because it is said he helps luke create a new jedi order

    of course, Savage would assume he's dead and doesn't actually kill him.

      I agree with that. I eliminated a portion of my script where I explained that likely outcome in greater detail because the video already ran long. But let's be honest, considering all he's already survived, I doubt Savage would be the death of K'kruhk. I just think he could put him out of commission for a while.

      not to mention Savage is probably not gonna make sure he's dead given the others who also didn't.

    If you're considering requests then these are some matches I would personally like to see
    Shaak Ti vs Kit Fisto (hard to call, a Makashi specialist like Ti vs an absolute Schii Cho master like Fisto. Probably the two fastest moving Jedi behind Yoda and Windu)
    Agen Kolar vs Darth Maul (Like to see an all Zabrak duel, plus Kolar hasn't featured in vs yet)
    Sidious vs Plagueis (Sidious feared his master enough to kill him in his sleep, is this because he doubted his chances in a fair fight?)
    Ki Adi Mundi vs Saesee Tiin (never seen a vs with Ki Adi and as both he and Tiin are long serving council masters I figured this would be a good match up)
    Plo Koon vs Obi Wan (interesting to see how well Kenobi does against a Djem So master with more control than Anakin)

      Shaak Ti Vs. Kit Fisto is a contest of near-equals, and I feel the battle could really go either way. However, if I were a betting man, I'd give the ever so slight edge to Shaak; it's an excellent fight, though.
      Agen Kolar and Darth Maul, in my opinion at least, are near equals as swordsmen, with Kolar being slightly superior from my perspective. Maul does have a decent edge as a combative Force wielder, though; any slip up from Kolar will spell instant death. Again, a very interesting match.
      TPM Sidious loses to Plaguies in a hard-fought battle, in my opinion, but any other incarnation of Sidious should win, with RotS Sidious Vs. Plagueis being basically a repeat of Yoda Vs. Sidious.
      Ki-Adi Mundi and Saesee Tiin are equals in nearly every department, in my opinion. This battle is a 5/10 split for me.
      EvanNova95 covered Kenobi Vs. Plo Koon perfectly, in my opinion; check it out if you have the time.

      Ki Adi Sandwich Thanks for giving me your opinion on them. They are all close match ups in my opinion.
      I agree with all except I would be tempted to give Fisto the edge against Shaak Ti (just because I think her defence is not strong enough to deal with his fast paced and randomised attacks, but on the other hand her use of Makashi could potentially expose his vulnerabilities. As you say, it would be a close call and I think arguments could be made ether way).
      I will check out the Kenobi vs Plo Koon fight, thanks for the tip.
      I think Evan's does great quality videos but I don't agree with the logic he uses and I think he and Reti have a weird bias towards Ti and Koon and even Kenobi, as they seem to rate those 3 far above all other Jedi, apart from Yoda and Windu (his Ti vs Bane and Kenobi vs Plaguies videos were really bad and good examples of the bias I refer to. I don't see how he can justify either match even being viable, let alone actually giving the victory to the Jedi. Was also disappointed to see Jensaarai's involvement with the latter as I thought he was above such bias).
      Still enjoy their work but I think the obvious bias spoils some of their videos. Grey Jedi seems far more reasoned in his judgment, as does Antoine (and until his collaboration on the Kenobi vs Plaguies video I would have said the same about Jensaarai). So have my enthusiasm for Reti and Evan's videos has waned a bit as their love for Ti and Koon seems to cloud their judgement

      Matthew Sands I completely agree with your views on EvanNova and Reti4. However, Plo Koon Vs. Kenobi is one of those few matches, that I feel, Evan really nails on the head.

      The fasted moving Jedi behind Yoda are Anakin and Windu. Kenobi too.

    • @matthewsands1572
      @matthewsands1572 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheNuisanceBird Maybe, but Cestus Deception seemed to suggest that Fisto moved faster than Kenobi. Kenobi is more powerful but in straight up speed I think Fisto may have an edge. There is not a definitive canon answer to settle such an issue but the EU strongly suggests that Fisto at least is faster, as he was described as moving too fast for Kenobi to even track his movements, so if he can't keep up just observing Fisto's seppd then that would suggest he cannot match that speed, but I maybe wrong, not so sure about Shaak Ti (going more on other people's claims with her).
