Ferrari 360 F1 gearbox issue, can the amateur mechanic fix it?

  • Another Steve's amateur ( A MATE U R ) garage video. Can the amateur mechanic fix a Ferrari F1 gearbox. With limited knowledge and basic tools. A story of the ups and downs of classic car ownership, restoration and maintenance. Ferrari and Maserati owners should be interested in this one.
    My dream of owning a Ferrari was fulfilled when I could not find a Ferrari 308 GTS for the right price, so we purchased the cheapest Ferrari 360 spider we could find, no one else would buy it, it was certainly past its best, but it was not fire destroyed or an ex rental car, but it is an approachable, fun Ferrari, we did not have to rebuild the engine but the gearbox was a different matter. This video would be relevant to the Ferrari 360 Modena but not the Challenge straddle which is a different car altogether. Having said that I would never sell my Ferrari 360, if it was a choice between a Porsche GT3 Vs Ferrari 360 Spider then that would be a difficult decision. Lighter and stiffer than previous road going Ferraris, this was a new era for Ferrari in its race to produce the best super car of all time! In this video we work on this truly special Ferrari, even though some people believe the F1 gear box gave the Ferrari a bad name hopefully with this ownership report we have finally solved this issue. There are plenty of 360 experts that give buyers advice but there is nothing better than an owners point of view.
    We have not rebuilt the engine along with the whole car & gearbox but we have improved the cars overall appearance of the complete engine and gearbox plus the bodywork. So why did I not buy a Ferrari 308GTS, well the price was the determining factor, I still have ambition to test drive one in the not to distant future.
    Similar to my Ferrari 360 spider recently seen on Tyrrells classic workshop video only his is blue, my Ferrari is running as good as it looks, for the first 1000 miles in my Ferrari 360. Why I will never sell my Ferrari 360, as I still have many items I wish to restore on the car. I will divulge the true cost of restoring my Ferrari in a video coming soon. It has suffered from the usual 360 sticky switches problem, and my Ferrari 360 is getting repainted soon.The Ferrari 360 spider makes a unreal noise on start up.Luckily the Ferrari 360 Modena is the approachable, fun Ferrari, and mine is possibly one of Britains highest mileage Ferrari 360. We will also discuss why cars like this give Ferrari a bad name, but they can be low maintenance dream car.There are many Ferrari 360 experts only too willing to give buyers advice, but I can tell you the story of my Ferrari 360 ownership.I was in too minds to buy a Ferrari 360 vs a Honda NSX, both very useable daily driver cars.A Porsche GT3 vs Ferrari 360 was also a consideration.

    As you’re probably aware the F1 pump motor is prone to overheating especially with constant gear changes in traffic. I found a kit for the pump which included cooling fins, a hose clamp and ceramic paste. Once the paste was applied and the fins clamped to the motor casing the pump motor did run cooler.

      Many thanks for your comment, no I was not aware that the F1 pump suffered from overheating. I will research the kit as the cooling fins would make sense.

      Plus the pump relay. Sometimes the relay contacts weld together with pump running all the time.@@SteveMoore-360

    Good on you for getting stuck into it. I fix my own 308gts, but it’s a much simpler beast! 😅
