    Good overview! I've tried a fair bit of this kit over the years. Back before the mid 90s in the British Army we were issued 2 x aluminium mess tins, and a 58 pattern water bottle, with a plastic mug which fitted on the top. With each 24 hour ration pack we were issued 1 x old hexy burner with a packet of 8 hexy tabs inside...obviously without the cup insert although I believe those could be purchased from BCB, as could Crusader metal cups prior to them being issued.
    Like you I don't like aluminium and nowadays use Dutch stainless mess tins. I do however like the German Army design with it's billy can and deep frying pan which is ideal for 2 sausages! I've used it in the past.
    My standard cookset nowadays when I go out stealth camping/bushcrafting consists of:
    - Dutch Army water bottle and stainless canteen cup (same as old US issue), supplemented with a Pathfinder canteen cup lid in stainless;
    - 1 x Dutch Army stainless mess tin supplemented with a HM supplies aluminium teflon lined mess tin lid which can double as a shallow frying pan - again these were available back in the 80s from Silverman's/Survival Aids but at eye-wateringly high prices for those days;
    - a standard civilian Trangia burner, which I use inside a folding Lixada knockoff stainless twig burner, this works a treat as windshield cum pot stand, and of course you can also burn solid fuel or Firedragon gel inside, or twigs.

      Funny you should mention the Dutch canteen and cup I’ve just been looking at buying one of those in stainless steel. I’ve had the cup and lid a while and I’ve also got a repro us army ww2 carrier. Nice little sets. Wasn’t aware of the existence of the Teflon lined mess tin lid, expect they’re hard to get now👍

      @@guerrillashadowman Actually the mess tin lid isn't hard to get...I google searched to write my previous comment as I'd forgotten the name, and you can get them for a fiver from HM Supplies.
      Dutch cups and canteens are pretty easy to find too, on ebay for example. I picked my cup up while I was living in the Netherlands, from an army surplus store, for just 2 Euros! I'm quite a fan of Dutch kit, also got a 65litre Bergen in DPM (i.e. Lowe Alpine Stingray), a Dutch DPM poncho, and a Dutch inflatable sleeping mat. I do have some British Army surplus kit too, like the shelter sheet and goretex bivvy bag both in DPM, but no British Army kit which was on issue when I was in! Back then we had to make do with olive green ponchos and 58 pattern webbing.

    British Army soldiers have to buy Jetboils from their own pocket...some things never change. Back when I was in we had to buy our own bergens, norgies (Norwegian Army shirts) and metal cups as none were on issue.

    I have the Swedish m40, made of steel. It was cheap a decade ago when bought it, pretty much unbreakable, and easy to use. Works with its trangiaburner, on fire, and on electric stove and gas stove. The weight might be a issue, but not a big issue.

    There's no such thing as a 58 pattern stainless steel mug! This is the Mk1 Crusader mug, made by BCB which came out sometime in the 80s. Back in the days when we were issued 58 pattern gear, these could be privately purchased from places like Silverman's, or the old Survival Aids via mail order, for about £20 which is more like £80 in today's money. Some jammy guys were able to get their hands on buckshee 38 pattern metal mugs. The only 58 pattern mug that ever existed was the plastic one which obviously was no use for cooking in.

      Oh that’s interesting, mine does indeed say bcb on it. I’ve learned something new 👍🏻

      @@guerrillashadowman Should point out I made a mistake in my comment which you got right in your vid, the elusive metal mug which I never saw during my 5 years in the Army was the 44 pattern, not 38 pattern.

    although ther is no 58 metal mug there was anon stick version released called a 85 mug which also comes with a lip to stop burning your lips
