- I had an hour spare whilst working in the historic market town of Higham Ferrers in Northamptonshire, so I decided to discover and learn something I had not known before. Hidden within the woodland area of Castle Park, there are spring fed ponds that once belonged to the castle that once dominated over the Nene Wetlands. Although they're mostly dried up, the spring water still runs so I suspect during prolonged wet weather the ponds would fill to a higher level. A little walk around the wood and an information board explains all we need to know. It's fish ponds and rabbit warrens intended for fine dining for the upper class of the day. The area made for a good little explore and it's my first mini adventure discovering the town. As I learn, you will learn. If you don't know already that is ð. Should you wish to learn more about the Historic Higham Ferres the the town council website is very useful. Here is a link for the site ð www.highamferr...

Interesting bit of history, thanks Purple ð
You're most welcome. I glad you enjoyed the show
Best bit - you were literally about 200 yards from where Higham Ferrers Railway Station used to be, out back of the old Library building! :) Good to see my old playground again!
I got some pictures by drone of the site but I thought I'd start by learning some of the older history before delving into some newer stuff. Thanks for watching guys
me and my partner go around that area, he lives not far from there. I love walking around there as it's really pretty and calming
A perfect place to re-align yourself
Thanks Purple. I go past it most days & never knew it was there. All the best & keep up your fabulous filming.....
Thank you Michael. I'm glad you like the video.
Cheers Purple, thanks for the look in, didnât know anything about a Castle or Fishponds around there, but I do now!.
Whey hey! That's what it's all about. As I learn, hopefully so do others ð thanks for watching ð
Hi,
I grew up in Higham Ferrers and have some very fond memories of many adventures in Castle Fields throughout the 90's.
In the winter that moat used to flood thoughout the whole 'L' pattern and presumably still does, but probably too deep and boggy to navigate then really. There was always branches, rocks and scrap tyres in there you could use as stepping stones from the tyre place that used to be opposite on the Midland road. I can almost smell that mud just from watching your video. There was also a very old Horse Chesnut tree in the smaller field towards the back of the Dragon Pub which has now sadly been removed. We would spend hours trying to get the huge Conkers down from the branches in Autumn.
Oh mate, just you mentioning the stink I can smell it too. An abandoned Railway near Leyland estate in Wellingborough has a silted water gullet running along side. I tried to jump it but put one foot back ð. Stagnated mud up to my thigh ð. Anyways thanks for watching and sharing your story with us.
Wow whoâd have thunk rabbits were a delicacy? I remember being made to eat rabbit stew as a kid it was horrible.
BTW classic purple rummagings, fantastic!
Gotta have a good rummage from time to time ð
in the rec there is the cup and saucer it was part of the castle ponds use to play there all the time
Yh someone else mentioned that too. I'll be back for more soon I'm sure
I always thought that was the ponds from Chichele College in the High Street. Played there in the seventies. Even did a maypole dance with the school in the grounds of the college when the education system was still run by hungover sixties hippy types. Great days, despite the power cuts and strikes :)
Ha! I know you from the Ferrers or Rushden Boys School :D
Hi purple from Dan
Hiya Dan
Hi Dave. probably the spit from Sywell. Was flying for us on Sunday at the bus rally. Sywell aviation museum worth a visit if you not already been. caroline
Yh more than likely. Thanks for commenting Caroline
There's a Lanc flying over for Desborough 'Forties day ;)
Hi purple ðI was in Higham today ,very close to that spot.cant believe i didn't know those fish ponds were there.suppose they would have contained carp for food back in them days.would have expected the area to be full of rubbish but it didn't seem to bad.Did you find the two cans of beer i left for youððð
ð ðĪĢ ð I was already having a good day so I thought to leave them for the next weary traveler
Got any other adventures coming up? I'd love to come with ya instead of sitting in my house all day ððð
Honestly it's all spurt of the moment at the minute. I'm more focused on the railway videos tbf
That's no fish pond it crap I lived there when I was homeless.
Nah probably not now. The water is more than likely contaminated and would need a proper clear up before fish can be added again
