  • WARNING - I will NOT be held responsible for any damages the methods shown in this video may cause to yours or someone else's computer, hardware, software, and/or data, including loss of use of such devices and/or loss of data and/or loss of profits from the resulting inability to use such devices and data. Any information or program you choose to put into use from this video is done AT YOUR OWN RISK. As a precaution, I recommend backing up any irrecoverable data before practicing any of the methods shown in this video.
    This is the advanced troubleshooting technique video tutorial of how to possibly fix a PC that will that will not beep when booting the system; that will not display anything on screen, and that will essentially not progress into and past POST.
    This video will try to troubleshoot and resolve this situation: although your fans may spin up, your PC will never properly boot and never progress past this stage. You cannot access or interact with your computer, and are otherwise stuck. Furthermore, the ON/OFF power button doesn't power down machine unless you hold the power button for a number of seconds. It is as if your PC is stuck in idle, sleep or hibernation mode.
    This video will show you first and foremost how to clear the CMOS which will hopefully allow you to then access your BIOS.
    Furthermore, if you find yourself in the situation where your computer powers on for a mere second or a couple of seconds, and then immediately powers off and will not power back on again (essentially the power feed to your PC does not remain stable) this can often be attributed to a short circuit. Skip ahead (fast forward) to 15:20 to find out how to solve this issue.
    This video will also show you how to breadboard a PC, allowing you to test components on your motherboard that is outside of the case before even having to mount the hardware within the case. Skip ahead (fast forward) to 20:20 to find out how.
    ---
    Note that if you would rather begin by viewing BASIC troubleshooting techniques to try and fix this issue, first see:
    • How to possibly fix a ...
    ---
    If you find yourself in this situation (a PC that will turn on but will not beep and will not display anything on screen), try to Do what my video shows: disconnect the power cable, remove the CMOS battery, short the CMOS jumper pins for 9 seconds then return the jumper cap to its initial position (only if you can find these jumper pins; if not, skip this step), press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), leave the PC unplugged and in this state overnight, then the next day return the CMOS battery to its socket, power up the PC, and if no beep, then disconnect the power cable, press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), remove one component, power up the PC, and if no beep then repeat (each time unplugging the PC, pressing the power switch to discharge remaining power, removing a remaining component, and then powering up, and this until the PC beeps at boot).If it never beeps, even when you are down to just motherboard, power supply & CPU+fan, one of these remaining components may be bad
    ---
    If your computer powers on but for a mere second or two and then immediately powers down, It sounds like your motherboard is developing a short circuit due to contact with the metal casing. Most likely it has to do with the screws and metal mounting stands (supports) that your motherboard sits on. The cheapest way to fix this problem is to introduce cardboard washers between the screws and where they make contact to the motherboard, or you can buy plastic mounting supports at a computer shop.
    Alternatively, to ensure that it is in fact the computer developing a short circuit due to contact with the metal casing, you can always Breadboard it: Skip ahead (fast forward) to 20:20 to find out how.
    ---
    AWARD MODULAR BIOS POST BEEP ERROR MESSAGE CODES:
    One beep when displaying logo - no error during POST
    Long beeps in an endless loop - no system RAM installed or detected
    One long beep followed by three short beeps - video card not found or video card memory bad
    High-frequency beeps when the system is working - the CPU is overheating and the system is running at a lower frequency
    ---
    Beep error codes differ from one BIOS manufacturer to the next. To discover what the beep error code is trying to telling you, discover the manufacturer of your BIOS (available in the motherboard's manual or on the motherboard's manufacturer's website {on the page for your specific motherboard model}) and then look up the frequency and interval of your beep error code on:

    Heh, thanks for the kind words. Sadly no OBD2 type scanner exists for PC motherboards. Given that said scanner would need to access the computer in order to diagnose what's wrong (and in these cases the computer is not accessible by any means) the scanner wouldn't be able to read any error codes (or anything for that matter). Computer technicians generally perform electric resistance checks and swap-out tests to speed this process along (the average PC owner probably does not have another MB : )

    This happened to me and I had no bleeps. All I did was disconnect the power to a hard drive, I didn't even touch the sata cable. But when I switched back on it started up but with no bleep. I asked Tom's Hardware but I got no reply. I felt lost, but then I found this video. Superb! Thanks for posting.

    Axle69e Chances are your repair partition is corrupt and cannot be used to repair the PC any longer. What I recommend you do is using a different PC with a cd burner, download and burn a Linux Live CD which you will then use to boot your defective PC with. There, you can back up any irrecoverable files to USB mass storage (such as a removable hard disk or a USB flash key). Once that is done, you will have to boot up the machine with your desired operating system's install disc (Windows I presume), and will then have to format your machine and reinstall from scratch. It's unfortunate but if you have exhausted every recovery option on that repeating recovery screen without results, then I do not know what else to tell you. You may want to google search 'windows recovery repeats' and see if anyone else has a better solution. Good luck with it.

    Thanks for the Video. I was going to look for a trouble shooting manual to help me diagnose my three year old Gatway that stopped running. I removed or disconnected everything that I could see that was disconnectable (bad word) from the motherboard and still get no beep. I'm waiting for a PS tester to arrive in the mail. I'm having this same issue, and have followed all these steps and in the first video as well. I have narrowed down the problem to either a faulty motherboard or a faulty CPU, both of which are brand new. I am not getting an error beeps. How can I test to figure which of these 2 components is the problem, without having a 2nd device for testing them individually? Thanks!

    Should you not test that the CMOS button battery is not dead?
    Mine was - I hadn't used my tower for several months ('had a new laptop to play with) and the battery was a year or two old. I replaced it with a new one but it still didn't POST (power on self-test) and beep. Yet all mobo LED lights light as normal.
    I think I'll need to try clearing the CMOS BIOS, etc. as you suggest.
    BTW - I terminally blew my previous mobo by replacing the CMOS clearing jumper on the wrong pins, D'oh - so use your glasses and plenty of light to make sure you know the original position of the jumper!
    Thanks for your help with these vids.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good tip regarding the CMOS CLR jumper. Regarding the testing of the CMOS battery, well, normally I would say that 'what does it matter, if the PC ends up posting, you will discover upon your next power outage (or the next time you move the PC) whether or not your CMOS battery needs replacing or not'. Unfortunately, through the feedback I've received from others, it seems that some motherboards actually REQUIRE a functional CMOS battery just to operate, which I feel is ludicrous (but alas, I don't manufacture motherboards, so I guess all I can do is complain openly about this : \

  • @RodneyDickson
    @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jake Emery Well, this can cause issues, yes, but I doubt you did permanent damage to the board just by omitting this item. What you COULD have done however, is not provided sufficient cooling to your CPU and hence caused permanent damage to that. Nonetheless, try the steps in the video and see if they revive the PC. Good luck.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alex Lalhmunsanga Did some research on your beep problem, and it is indicating that there is a video card output issue, not RAM. HOWEVER, given that there are no beep error codes when the RAM is connected, I would try first either unplugging the PC and reorganizing the order of RAM modules in the sockets then powering up, OR try unplugging the PC and trying different amounts of RAM modules or different RAM modules altogether before powering up. If none of these work, try a different video output device.

    I am just going to leave a comment here, because I found this useful, but; I am doing a motherboard swap after having years of I/O probs and USB probs with an MSI. I bought a Asus board because they are my favorite, and really struggled to get it to boot.
    I wasn't getting any fans or anything. I put it back to the MSI board and still couldn't get it to boot and somehow the power switch was bad, out of all of that.
    So I found a junk emachines power switch and made the msi work (different i/0 plug in) and ordered a new power switch, to which I tried to install it all today, and no fans or post.
    That is what I found this, and you give be the idea, though I had already done it, to basically remove everything except the main 24 and start from ground up.
    Turns out, it was that the 4 pin cpu power was in wrong. The PSU came with two of them, and one fit at a left hand snap way, and found out the other one fit at a verticle top side clip angle and I guess that was it.
    So I am loading windows on it now with everything hooked up and am not out of the woods yet but that was a huge hurdle for me.
    I like your video, seems to be the best I ran across for the no post issue, given that no fans spin, rather than what most of them are, which is fans and just no video which is most likely for them a video card or driver issue. But this covers that too.
    Thanks.

    The problem is your MB if you have already verified the PS is ok. Most likely bad caps. i would either throw the board out and get a new one or use a visual check of the caps, look for any burn marks or bulges and finally USE an ESR meter to verify bad caps. Replace and try the board again.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      For other readers, the use of the term 'caps' in this post refers to capacitors (those small cylindrical items all over your motherboard).
      Good tip valveman12, thanks for sharing : )

    • @valveman12
      @valveman12 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      RodneyDickson I just went through the same troubleshooting on a MB. I used my ESR meter to check all the caps but there are all good. So next I'll look at any regulators. Failing that, I would have to assume a control chip has blown. MB can be frustrating.

      Heh, you're far more knowledgeable in the subject than I am. After trying everything in this video, if I did not spot any physical damage to the board (such as bulging capacitors or burn marks on contacts) I would simply give up on it. Hope you can find a way to bring the board back : )

    Hi thank you for this very informative video. But then I would like to ask if I can do it in another way I mean, I will start by removing everything from the main board and then one by one re install the components/boards until the problem will emerge because I understand you are doing this while boards/components are on board and removing them 1 by 1. Which do you think is more preferable? Thank you very much

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason behind removing components one at a time is because generally the end user wants to get their PC up and running as quickly as possible with as little effort as possible. However, removing everything from the motherboard and testing through building is perfectly acceptable as well, however doing so will require more effort to return all of the removed components from the board afterwards : ) Just ensure that your board has a CPU, heatsink+fan, PC motherboard speaker , power switch (generally from the computer case) and power supply connected to it and from there ensure you are hearing beep error codes upon every boot (until both RAM and some sort of video out is established of course) and from there you should ensure that each boot produces a POST beep message and a POST screen. Good luck with the build : )

    My computers been working for 2+ years, but one day it decided to shut down by itself and turns off after a couple seconds. I tried to see what the problem is and found out when I install all 4 RAM sticks in the computer, it will turn off within the first 5 seconds of booting. But when I keep 2 RAM sticks the computer stays on no problem but will not display anything. I just can't figure out what the problem is here. Help please.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem sounds directly related to a short circuit created by contact with the metal casing (sometimes, builds can 'tough' through the short circuits until one day they can no longer). If you've reset the CMOS (unplugged the PC and removed the button cell battery for an hour or so) with no luck, then I highly recommend you breadboard your PC to confirm if this is the issue. Skip ahead (fast forward) this video to 20:20 to find out how.

    So here's my issue, I recently got some led fans, they came with these 2 pin connectors that were separate for the LEDs, without them it's just a normal fan.
    I mistakingly plugged these into where my power sw and reset pins are on my mobo.
    So now, the computer will not only not turn on, but it won't even post, the mobos LEDs and the led for my CPU cooler will come on briefly then turn off. It will do this repeatedly, and ironically it's with a specific PSU.
    Idk what to do but I fear I bricked my board

    Good day sir! I have the same problem, but what i did is i disconnected two of my fans on the system unit case (except the motherboard, video card and PSU fan); fortunately, my computer was able to beep, boot and reach the desktop, and i was able to use my computer normally. What i am worried of... is that my computer now lacks ventilation (due to fan disconnection, these fans are now like decorations hanging on the system unit case). What could the problem be? what should i do so that i can return these fans back to their uses?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply. I'd assume that the issue is related to a short circuit created by these fans when connected to the motherboard. Now I assume that you are using the fan connector type that connects directly to the motherboard in order to provide the needed power feed to these fans. What you can try to do, is first unscrew the metal mounting screws that bind the fans to the case, and replace these with plastic mounting solutions (I myself use cable ties - also known as zip ties or tie wraps - it doesn't look pretty, but it does the job.) If this doesn't work out, you can purchase power adapters that convert an IDE power connector to a fan connector (both ends female) which may alleviate the issue (since you are bypassing the motherboard connection completely). If none of these solutions work, try but one fan at a time to see which functions and stick with that one. If after all this, you cannot get the chassis fans to function, I'd replace the fans (chassis fans are not terribly expensive and can be purchased on eBay for cheap). Good luck with it.

      Ok, well, the single post beep is a good sign. Can you hear your hard drive spinning and loading the data from your operating system? I would guess it's an issue with the video output. I'd A) try a different PC on your screen to ensure the screen is functioning as intended, then B) try every video output you have available on your PC to see if perhaps the incorrect video output device is set in the BIOS. Good luck.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gsuslives4ever That's bizarre! Hmm, if you did clear the CMOS overnight (with no power cable connected to the PC and the power chassis button pressed to discharge remaining power before the overnight wait) then perhaps your video adapter has become damaged? Not entirely sure. The way Windows 10 takes control of a PC's boot process, it's a whole new world to what I know. Sorry I couldn't be of more help : \

    Hi. At 25:30, May I know what is PC Speaker and its function.?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sanjay Prasad This speaker outputs the beep error codes, as well as the POST beep (when the system passes power-on self checks during a successful boot). It seems redundant should there be no problem, but can be very useful should your PC not be able to boot and instead reports a problem.

    • @tobedeleted857
      @tobedeleted857 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RodneyDickson
      Thanks for the reply. Don't we have in-built speaker which gives beep sounds. Why and in which cases we need this.?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sanjay Prasad Many PC manufacturers no longer include said PC speaker. If you have a connector for SPEAKER or SPK coming from your case, then there is one in the case. If you see one integrated on your motherboard, then you have one there. If not, you can always buy one of these at a computer shop. Should the PC not boot and not POST (as shown in the video) hearing the beep error codes can help greatly in diagnosing the problem at hand

      If you've tried everything in this video, including breadboarding the board, then yeah, you sadly might be outta luck with this one. The culprit will most likely be the board or the CPU (with other components still being viable to be used in another machine). If you see any burn marks or any bloated/burst capacitors on the motherboard, then it is to blame. Sadly, I can't think of any other suggestions: sorry I couldn't be of more help : \

    Hiya, I've got an old pc that I tried to connect to my hdtv through vga to vga but the display won't work.. it just goes blank (black screen) then power light flashes on the hdtv. Haven't used it in a while, for like 4 years lol but I recall it working... it powers up but but no beeps :( From what I've gathered, it could be the cpu or mobo... only using a keyboard, could a mouse not plugged in stop an old pc from booting up?

    • @RodneyDickson

      +Bored Gamer Doubt it. Sadly what you're describing is a confused BIOS that won't post (this is rather common for a PC that was left unused for a long time). If you want to resurrect that PC, you might want to follow the instructions in my video sadly. Good luck

  • @lionking888555

    Hi Rodney,
    I am down to two components in determining the faulty one: CPU and Mobo. I went through your video and did all the steps but PC still no booting up. The fans run for 1-2 seconds and shut down. It was working fine yesterday and what I did (which I think somehow cause the issue) is I drilled a couple of holes to mount an extra fan in the case (PC shut down and unplugged); and after that the PC would not post. Was it the minor vibration that happened while drilling the holes?
    Anyway, what I am trying to see is if there is a way to determine or make an educated guess as to which component it is - the CPU or Mobo?
    I got Dell Studio XPS that is 4 years old but still runs decently ( or ran ... lol).

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, if you actually breadboarded the mobo (as shown in the video) and the problem still persists, then I'd assume that metal shavings from the drilling actually contaminated the motherboard's contact points and is causing short circuits. If you haven't yet performed the breadboarding technique, I highly recommend it at this point. Lemme know how it turns out.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mark Jaycob Casera Some machines behave this way sadly. Try unplugging the PC, removing the CMOS battery, pressing the power chassis switch to discharge remaining power, leaving the PC as so overnight, and then in the morning reconnecting it all and see if the issue has resolved itself.

  • @MaHutchy
    @MaHutchy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So what exactly was the problem with that PC?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer: the motherboard in this video is simply put: junk. Long answer: a corruption of the CMOS settings was preventing the motherboard from properly entering POST with both video card and RAM modules connected. Removing the video card allowed the BIOS to write updated (and more proper) CMOS settings which then allowed both the RAM modules as well as the video card slot to be accessed.

    • @MaHutchy
      @MaHutchy 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      RodneyDickson Thanks for your response.
      I followed the same procedure as you did in the video, but my PC still isn't beeping/booting. So I guess the motherboard is dead. The thing is before I had the problem, my PSU would make sparking sounds when I plug in the power cord and one of my front USB ports use to give me notifications of a power surge whenever I plug in any usb device.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MarHutchy
      Hmm, yeah, that definitely doesn't sound salvageable sadly. Although I cannot say confidently that the CPU is salvageable, chances are the rest of the components used in the PC are, so at least you can save a bit of cash on your next PC build by reusing some of the old components. Good luck with it : )

    Okay. So I wanted to build a PC and I did. It started out a bit rough, where the PC would only turn on for a few seconds and turn off and keep doing so until you unplug it. I somehow got it working and have worked. I hadn't touched it for a few months and I tried to turn it on. It then turned on for a spilt second. So, throughout the process I have swapped Power Supplies and both had the same outcome. I ordered a new motherboard. When I hooked up the new mobo, it now turns on for 5 seconds, and off and in a cycle until I unplug it. I am not sure why... I don't seem to be getting video signal either. I have replaced everything except the CPU and still nothing. I am going to get a new CPU. Would that fix it? Thanks so much!

      If your computer powers on but for a mere second or two and then immediately powers down, It sounds like your computer is developing a short circuit due to contact with the metal casing. Most likely it has to do with the screws and metal mounting stands (supports) that your motherboard sits on. The cheapest way to fix this problem is to introduce cardboard washers between the screws and where they make contact to the motherboard, or you can buy plastic mounting supports at a computer shop (be forewarned though, these plastic mounting stands can not be reused after installation).
      Alternatively, to ensure that it is in fact the computer developing a short circuit due to contact with the metal casing, you can always Breadboard it: 1)place the motherboard with CPU+Fan on wood or non-shiny cardboard 2)connect all of the case connectors to the board's panel 3)with a power bar that is OFF connect the PC power cable from the power bar to the power supply and the power supply to the board 4)while NEVER touching any exposed component,power on the power bar and press the power switch on the case.If the problem still persists,one of the remaining components is probably defective.Power off the power bar before dismantling

    Hi Rodney, I am having this same problem with my gaming pc. Tried all the steps up until breadboarding my motherboard but was not able to get any post error code beeps.
    I will note this all came about when I was changing my ram into different slots I then booted up my computer and it instantly shut off with a slight burning smell from the PSU. I also checked the ram and one of the sticks was not seated correctly
    After this the problems started can't get the pc to post or give any error beeps no matter what have even tried with a new PSU.
    Might it still be worth breadboarding my setup and trying what you done towards end of video with inserting ram back in. Might this work or is it safe to say the motherboard is done for after ruling out the PSU?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +lee patton Here's the thing, I've once burnt out contacts on a RAM module, now, it is said that once that happens, shrapnel from said RAM module in the socket can cause a short and ultimately a mobo dying for good, BUT I am also cheap, so the way I handled it was to try to use a vacuum in the socket, but still boycotting the use of said RAM socket that had the burnout and instead relying on only the other RAM sockets. Keep in mind that your PC might die at any time, so keep that in mind and make backups often, but hey, if I were you, I'd run it into the ground (this, of course, if you could get it working through the methods shown in this video). Good luck with it all.

      If this is new hardware that you are installing on your motherboard (that has not yet functioned on your motherboard), note that matching bus types of video card to motherboard socket (PCI-E for example), matching socket types of CPU to motherboard socket (LGA1366 for example) or matching bus types of RAM module to motherboard socket (DDR3 for example) does not necessarily signify compatibility. If this is the first time you are trying this hardware on your motherboard, there is a chance that this new hardware is not compatible with your motherboard, despite the same bus type and despite the fact that the new parts fit in their respective motherboard socket. Your motherboard manufacturer's website will have a support page dedicated to your motherboard's model, and on this support page should be a compatibility list for such components as video cards, CPUs and RAM modules. Ensure that your new component is certified to function with your motherboard, and if your new component is not present on the compatibility list, then there is a chance that the new component is not compatible with your motherboard.

    i tried check each part....
    when i removed the RAM and switched - i did nt the single or long beeps, which you get when you switch on the system without the ram or if there is a ram fault. - Is that sign of af aulty RAM ?
    i checked the SMPS to, the fan seems to be running.
    I don t have a graphics card - so i'd rule that out.
    The HD seems to running - rule that out too

    Hi video poster, I wanna show you my case, I own a Asus K45VM which I bought in 2013. I had to do some stuff like dual booting, which was working very well until the day I messed up my debian uninstalling every package and I need to reinstall that. I failed few times, I shouldve just formatted everything and Installed each OS again, but I really wanted only to format and reinstall debian, and keep windows 8 intact. So, at the end of the debian installation I was trying to install the grub, happened 2 months ago so I dont recall everything, but I had to reboot after that, and then it never came to live again. My symptoms are: no bios, no post, black screen, only the white power button led on, and the green energy led on. Fan spins for 1 second then stops, waits for 5 seconds then rises to full speed and stays like that forever. Im stuck I tried everything, removed everything but the graphic card and cpu. Is my mobo good for proper disposal? (GARBAGE).
    PS: I will say your sentence everytime I need it, I just loved it!!!! "I believe this is........... good for garbage" hahahahha

      Whoh, well this is a tricky situation: If you've tried EVERY component in a different machine and see no issue, then I'd assume that the issue lies in compatibility between the components you are assembling. Perhaps try what you see in this video and discover in which component the issue lies. Also, remember that despite your motherboard having the same bus type as your selected RAM and video card, note that the same bus type does not indicate compatibility. Your motherboard manufacturer's website will have compatibility lists to indicate which components are in fact compatible with your motherboard.

      Since this is new hardware that you are installing on your motherboard (that you have not yet got to work on your motherboard,) note that matching bus types of video card to motherboard socket (for example, both motherboard socket and graphic card are PCI-E 16X) or matching bus types of RAM module to motherboard socket (for example, both motherboard socket and RAM module are DDR3) does not necessarily signify compatibility. If this is the first time you are trying this hardware on your motherboard, there is a chance that this new hardware is not compatible with your motherboard, despite the same bus type and despite the fact that the new parts fit in their respective motherboard socket. Your motherboard manufacturer's website will have a support page dedicated to your motherboard's model, and on this support page should be a compatibility list for such components as video cards and RAM modules. Ensure that your new component is certified to function with your motherboard, and if your new component is not present on the compatibility list, then there is a chance that the component is not compatible with your motherboard.

    You mentioned that it could take anywhere between 10 seconds and 24 hours to clear the CMOS, depending on the computer. What would cause such a variation? Reason I'm asking is because I took the CMOS battery out of my HP laptop, waited 5 minutes and put the battery back in, with no effect.
    Also, I'm wondering about the CMOS clear jump pins. Are those in all computers or just certain models? Do you have to go through the same process with laptops?
    Thanks.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +madcapper6 A laptop is a tricky beast for this procedure. Make sure you unplug your PC and disconnect your PC's RECHARGEABLE battery (yes, the battery pack, not just the CMOS battery) as well as the CMOS battery, then press the power switch to discharge any remaining power. Wait overnight (since you tried the 10 minute variation, now try the overnight variation) and hope for the best. The variation has to do with the way PCs store reserve power (some discharge instantly, some require time to discharge reserve power). Finally, I have a similar video specifically for laptops: check it out if no luck th-cam.com/video/qRhphHjQrNk/w-d-xo.html

    i have a problem with my PC and i cant figure out what is exactly is damaged
    i have removed all of the components but no beep code i even bought a new motherboard thinking that the old motherboard was damaged but the problem is still the same. here's my case
    no beep codes, no display, i connected only the power supply and the CPU and the heatsink the PC fans works for about 45 sec and then it shut down for 4 sec and turn back
    pls pls pls help me any idea on how to troubleshoot it

      It sounds like your computer is developing a short circuit due to contact with the metal casing.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds to be that, yeah. It would help to diagnose this if you had either A) spare RAM memory or B) a spare hard disk drive. I'd first try spare RAM memory and see if the problem persists, and if it does (or if you do not have spare RAM) try using a different HDD and reinstalling Windows 7 on that. If the problem does not persist, it could be that your original Windows 7 installation is simply corrupt.
      BTW MemTest86+ is a great tool to test for memory (RAM) errors. It's open source freeware. You can get it at memtest.org

      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate that you're trying many troubleshooting steps. If you have an addon video card as well as onboard, first ensure your PC is giving you the beep error code with the RAM removed, then unplug the PC, remove the addon video card, install the functioning RAM and try with onboard video. Also, you may want to try another video card (try borrowing one from someone) if the preceding doesn't work. Finally, if none of this works out, try breadboarding the PC as shown in the video (its the most complete way to eliminate variables that can cause this). Good luck with it.

    • @RodneyDickson

      Breadboarding this PC will reveal if the short is in fact caused by the case. If not, perhaps the power supply is not powerful enough or perhaps there is a defect in one of the components (I once had this issue with a video card that needed to be replaced). Hope this helps.

    What if the fans don't spin up? 500 watt power supply is 20+4 pin but my motherboard is a 24 pin. Could that be the problem?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many modern motherboards require a 24 pin power connector + an additional 4pin connector connected to another socket. The 24 pin connector generally can 'snap-off' the last 4-pin module in order to acommodate older motherboards that only require the 20 pin connector. As to not confuse the two different 4-pin connectors, both have different shaped housings so that only the correct 4-pin connectors can connect to any given socket. Now, given all of this information, is EVERY power socket on your motherboard properly connected to the power supply, or is there a power socket that has no connector connected to it?

    • @joesgotmore
      @joesgotmore 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to think so but there is an 8 pin connector that I had a 4 pin plugged in from the pwr supply. My pwr supply has no 8 pin connection. I will unplug everything and try and start over. Oh, should I take the ram out too. I am stressing so bad and I hope that the board isn't bad.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      joesgotmore
      RAM can be disconnected if the PC is making no beeps but is powering up, otherwise it can remain. Perhaps the 8-pin socket requires the two 4-pin connectors connected side-by-side? I dunno, I haven't seen this configuration. Try your best to ensure that all power sockets have connectors connected to them, and if not possible, perhaps you will require a different model of power supply unfortunately : \

    Man, it seems that you're a PC expert, so I hope that you can help me.
    Yesterday I repaired a 'no POST, no signal' PC with the help of this video, but my own PC is a little more difficult.
    So, the problem is, that my PC restarts when I play. (Asus f1a75 MoBo + 3870k APU + 6670 1GB DDR3 VGA + 8GB DDR1600 RAM +LCPower 500w PSU.)
    But the most weird thing is, that it restarts only once a day. So I play f.E. FIFA14 for 1 hour, suddenly it restarts, but after the restart, I can play as much as I want, no more restarts.
    What do you think? What could be the problem?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heh, wow, not as simple to diagnose sadly. Normally in this case I'd point to the code as the culprit, that is to say, either the FIFA game, the operating system, or one of the running programs is causing the issue. Of course, this can also extend to drivers, peripherals, components, the possibilities are endless. If not code related, perhaps it is in the way the video card handles this game, not sure sadly. Best I can tell you is that if your PC absolutely has to automatically power cycle when playing FIFA, best get that auto-reboot out of the way early before playing FIFA. Sorry I couldn't be of more help : \

    • @csabbymtc
      @csabbymtc 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      RodneyDickson Thak you for the answer!
      Actually, FIFA was just an example, the problem occures during any games, the only difference is the playing time... There are games, which I can play for 3 hours before the restart, but there are others, which I can play only for half an hour...
      I tried restarting manually before playing, but it didn't help, The restart during playtime still happened, as usual.
      I tried to run an AIDA64 stress test, but nothing happened during it.
      An there's something, that I didn't mention in my last post.
      I bought my PC with an N-Power 500w PSU (which is a crap, I know), and worked perfectly.
      But after a year the PSU died, the service replaced it with this LC-Power thing.
      That was the point where the problems started...
      Could the crappy PSU kill something? If yes, how can I find the wrong part?
      I asked experts in hungarian forums, they told me that this PSU was not enough for my PC, and I had to replace it with a 500w 80+ thing.
      What do you think about it? May it solve my problem?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Csaba Tóth
      Well, here's the thing: I can't say for sure if your problem is power supply related, but I myself keep MANY PSUs on hand in case one ever dies (so I don't have to run out to the shop to purchase one in such a case). That being said, it's never a bad idea to have one extra PSU on hand, so what I would try in your case, is to purchase a different PSU (perhaps more powerful or a better quality, just ensure not to purchase the same make and model of PSU that you already own) and from there, install the new one, give it a try, and see if it causes the same issues or if it solves them. Also, if the new PSU doesn't solve the problem, try a different power supply cable (swap with that of your monitor for example) and try a different power outlet (including a different power bar if you are on one of those) as some outlets or power taps do not provide an adequate or stable feed of power.
      Hope this information helps and hope things work out : )

    • @csabbymtc
      @csabbymtc 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your answer again.
      I've managed to solve the problem.
      I bought a new PSU with 80+ Silver certification, and since then, my problem went away. :)
      Actually, the problem was not only the PSU, but in some aspects the mobo as well.
      The new ASUS boards have a feature, called Anti-Surge protection. It can be activated or deactivated in the UEFI menu.
      This setting detected, that my PSU was not too stable under pressure (while gaming) and restarted my PC to save it.
      So after deactivating this feature I could play without the restart issue with my old PSU, but I think it's safer to have a reliable one.
      So I bought it, re-activated the protection, and works fine.
      So, thank you again! :)

      When it comes back on, it does remain stable yet not posting. I went to my grandpa, he said it may be a problem with the power supply, which I will be able to check Wednesday. I also have another question, if i try to change out my power supply, and the other components have been damaged by water, can it kill my PSU if i try to test it out and see if that is the problem? I'm not one hundred percent sure the parts are water damaged however it is a possibility

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this can cause damage to a power supply. Since your machine is not posting, I'd try what is shown in the video with the parts that you do already have, and if no luck, then I'd bring it to an electronics recycling center.

    I recently acquired an old and rather dusty Intel Aspire desktop. The first time I plugged it in, it immediately turned on without having to push a button with a continuous beep. I had to unplug it to shut it down. Every time I plug it in since, it will boot for a half-second then shut down. I carefully cleaned the inside, removed/swapped/dusted the RAM and its slots. I individually turned it on with the same result after swapping just about every wire. However, I did some research and found that the likely cause was a bad CPU or power supply. I removed the CPU and subsequently its fan. The PC stayed on this time. Is the CPU bad? Or is it still possible it's a bad power supply?

    • @RodneyDickson

      Heck, it could be a bad motherboard as well. Unless you have a spare motherboard, CPU, and power supply to perform swap tests, you may never know for sure. LAN not working:Invalid IP Configuration. Firstly, my ISP is fiber-optic w/o a router that comes in on an Ethernet-only cable. This is non-wireless & wired only. Don't care for the WiFi thing. I've tried all the cmd prompts, cables checked, tried other PC's that all work fine on same Ethernet. Also, even reformatted with new HDD. It worked at first after formatting. Then, I turned it off & the same thing happened with next power-on. I've got many other PC's(build them) that can be unhooked from Ethernet & reconnected over & over again w/o any issues. But, this one Asrock FM2A75M Pro4+ mb will not continue w/ working LAN. I did catch a nasty virus while on a test bench but it was reformatted after w/ new HDD. Could the problem be a physical one w/ the LAN port? Or, could it be a virus within the actual firmware/BIOS or is my ISP causing the issue w/ this one PC only? Doubt it. Please let me know.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh, I couldn't tell you about viruses, but this is the way I'd test all of this: firstly, if other WIRED connections from the router are working fine using other devices but not on the AsRock, then we can assume that the problem lies in the AsRock machine. Once the operating system boots to the user interface, I'd disconnect the network cable, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect. Take note of the 'wired network connection' icon in the taskbar system tray and ensure that it does not develop a yellow yield / caution ! symbol. If it does not and it shows a standard wired connection icon, then open a web browser and type anything into the search bar followed by pressing enter: see if something comes up. If not, then click on START (or the Windows key) in the RUN space, type without quotations "cmd" and press enter. From here, you are going to type the following lines without quotations: "ipconfig release" then press enter, wait for the confirmation, then type "ipconfig renew" and press enter. A connection should attempt to be reestablished (once again look to your taskbar system tray icon for notification that a proper wired connection has been established). Once this is done, perform the web browser search test again. If still no luck, you can go into Device Manager and ensure that the LAN adapter is functioning as intended, and if no signs of problem, you can then disable followed by re-enabling this adapter in Device Manager to see if this solves the problem (confirm with the web search test). If STILL no luck, you can check in your Windows Firewall to see if anything is being blocked there for some reason (set your network to Public while in there). Finally, as a last ditch effort, you can uninstall your LAN adapter drivers and reinstall them, hoping that will work, and if it still doesn't, I recommend you purchase an ethernet card and use that instead of your onboard LAN port (check kijiji for this if you do not want to pay full price). Good luck with it all.

    When I turn my PC on, it will power on for one or a few seconds, power off, then repower on again for one or few seconds, power off. repeat x times. This happens several times, but at random intervals it achieves the motherboard splash screen, often stopping there for longer than normal, and then either restarts the repeating process, or displays a black screen (staying powered on), or starts windows. On average I would say this process to finally get windows to boot takes about 15-20 minutes, but it can start just fine the first time, or it can take 2 hours. Could a short circuit cause this while still allowing the pc to eventually boot to windows?

    • @RodneyDickson

      Absolutely. Short circuits cause system instability in this fashion (sometimes you can be lucky and run your machine for many hours, whereas other times it may run for but a second or so). The PC fights to stay stable and functional through the shorts, and once it cannot take anymore, it shuts down (this threshold varies). Hopefully the suggestions in this video will help you solve your issue.

      RodneyDickson I fixed it, after bread boarding it. Turned out it was not a short circuit (at least I don't think it was). I have a dual bios board, and it would keep switching between the two bios (which is why it kept restarting). I flashed both and now it works perfectly.

      Ahh yes, I've heard of such a system before. Don't know what's the sense in having two different BIOSies, but I guess the manufacturers they have their reasons. Glad you got the issue fixed.

    Ok, so I'm down to just the motherboard, CPU and PSU and still have no beep. I tried my PSU on another computer and it's working fine so I know that's fine and the problem is either my CPU or motherboard, is there any way I can diagnose which one is faulty?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly you would require another CPU that is compatible with your current motherboard and/or another motherboard that is compatible with your current CPU. Finding a computer shop that accepts returns on opened items will permit you to test one of these, and if it doesn't work out, returning the product to test the other.

      RodneyDickson Thanks for the reply :) I've ordered a cheap Sempron 145. So when I put the new CPU on, if I don't get any POST diagnostic tone from the motherboard speaker, can I say definitively that my motherboard is dead?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      antiduckable
      Well, nothing of this is 'definitive' (for example, who's to say if both the CPU and motherboard are fried?) I find the choice of a Sempron curious (I hope if the machine does end up running again, that you use it strictly for web and office stuff (no gaming or lofty video processing). Nonetheless, I hope things work out for you.

      RodneyDickson I've just purchased the CPU so I have a known good back-up CPU should this ever happen again, there's no way It's staying on even if I can unlock the other core. Hopefully my motherboard does show some life and I'll get an FX-8350. Finger crossed! :)

    You forgot to mention that if that the pc boots for a second or two then shuts off that this could be more so that there is either a heatsink issue if there is dirt or particles in between the CPU to heatsink or Heatsink to Fan that sits on top of the fam etc etc and its the PC merely protecting itself from overheating so it shuts itself off, this happens alot with people smoking around there pc and leave there computer in a dusty dirty environment. If the risers or any metal is touching the board itself to cause a short circuit you would see a burn mark around the area of the short circuit and you would not be able to start it again. New motherboard needed unless the board is more recent and has surge protection inbuilt which not all have. How do i know I am a qualified Technician with 10 years experience Diplomas and what not.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh yes, the CPU overheating. Good point. I take for granted that those with this issue have their heatsink and ventilator properly installed with no damage to either. Thanks for the heads up : )

      Well, the simple answer is that chances are your motherboard has sustained damage and now will never function correctly again. The complex answer would be that perhaps you can find the right combination of components that will allow your PC to be usable despite running into said issues in the future. As crappy as it sounds, sadly with the state that the PC is currently in, I'd A) find the working combination of components B) reset the CMOS and C) format the HDD and reinstall the operating system from scratch. Sorry to not be too encouraging here, but this is the way I see the situation. Good luck with it all, and btw, they do sell power bars that regulate the flow of energy beyond what a simple surge protector does (I know, I use one myself). It might be something worth looking into for your needs (here in Canada they sell for around $30).

    i don't have the jumper for the cmos. This could be a problem?

      i notice also that there is only 2pin ans beside it, i see CLR CMOS

      If there is no jumper cap on that 2 pin CLR CMOS jumper, then covering it will function as the clear CMOS.

      If you are trying to clear the CMOS, unplug the PC, disconnect the button cell battery, press the power switch on the PC, then leave the PC as so overnight. After at least one night (can be more) reconnect the CMOS battery, power feed, and your CMOS should be cleared.

      I'd breadboard the PC and see if it boots without issue every time when out of the casing. If it does, then contact with the metal casing is causing the issue. Skip ahead (fast forward) to 20:20 to find out how.

    I recently went to upgrade from 2GB RAM (DDR2 PC2 5300U) to 4GB RAM (2x2GB sticks) with the 4GB installed my PC wont boot, the CPU spins up, the lights on the case come on, but i have no keyboard or monitor lights, the RAM runs perfectly in another computer also going from 2GB-4GB and the 2GB RAM in the other PC works in my PC, is there a problem with my PC having over 2GB RAM

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ell law Could simply be an incompatibility with those RAM modules or with their speed. I'd try different RAM. Also read up on your board to see if it has max RAM limitations.

    • @elliotlaw1590

    Look i bought a sapphire radeon 6870 gpu, used it for like 20 days, it worked perfectly, but one day i was leavin the chair and i hitted the case, a small hit and the pc turned off, everything worked good until that little hit, i changed to another graphic card and it was working, the radeon 6870 fans spin, idk whats there

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly the only thing I can suggest is that you install the 6870 in a different machine (perhaps a friends or family member's machine?) and see if it still functions. If it does not, check the card for any burn marks on the contacts or possible damage on the components of the card (such as the capacitors). Other than that, the only other thing I can suggest is that if it has a in-store warranty, try to return it for replacement, and if not, try to RMA it (but this obviously costs a bit of money to do so, but less than buying a whole new card)

    I am having a similar problem fans work lights work motherboard light is green except it turns off briefly and restarts, it doesn't beep because i donot have a case speaker, i have breadboarded it out of the case and the same thing happens

      +Stuart Rogers It's good that you mentioned that you breadboarded it, cause that was gonna be my next tip. Did you try breadboarding it with only the following components connected: onboard video, CPU+fan, RAM, and power supply?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stuart Rogers Hmm, most likely you did the right thing. The next step would be to check the CPU pins for damage, but hopefully the new board won't give you the same issues.
