@@TipsKalimba I'm sure she will, her birthday is next week. She already plays the piano so I'm sure she'll love the kalimba. Plus, she's five months pregnant and having a small instrument she can play anywhere will help her stress levels.
Thank you for sharing this. I got my very first Kalimba for my 35th birthday recentally. I don't know anything about it other than what I've leavened some from watching TH-cam videos. Thanks to TH-cam tutorials I was able to teach myself how to play Ukulele 4 ulcers ago and I took to it fast. Playing 5 songs in my first week. Kalimba seems to be more challenging due to SO MANY keys. And one thing that is helpful if your more of a letters person and trying to remember the letter goes to each string on a guitar is come.up with a saying or think of someone's name yoir close too. For example, the holds on a Ukulele starting with the top 4th chord is G, next down is C, then next down is E, and the last string which is the 1st string and bottom chord is A. So you need to remember in order sequence from top to bottom... G, C, E, A.... It cooluld be something like Good for G C for Children E for Eat A for apples Put it together... Good children eat apples. So if you are a LETTER PERSON, try doing this with your Kalimba keys. Though I do very very well with tablature and letters on my Ukuellee and Guitar. I do t think I can say the same thing for the Kalimba. Yes Om a beginner, but ai can already see that using numbers to count by and work is far more easier.on the Kalimba. Especially when I follow certain exercise patterns on the Kalimba. And yes even though I'm an avid read and of course I know my alphabet, I cannot tell you quickly what number a letter is in an alphabet. I guess cause Ive never praticed learning that. I'm sure I could but I don't care too... However, I'm very good at numbers and in my minds eye I can see those numbers and where they are suppose to be and if I'm following a certain number sequence in a beginner Kalimba song or exercise, I can follow the numbers more easily because I'm also counting them in my head and I know where they are suppose to be. Sure since alot of the numbers are mixed up, I'm having to learn to think numbers left to right spilt up with also octave higher numbers with it. My husband also wants to learn to play the Kalimba. I'm not sure which way he will prefer. But once I show him how I remember with numbers, he may see a way to make it easier for him to remember. Like when I learned a few beginner songs. There is no way I would have remembered the tablature and what notes to press just by looking at it several.times and then not looking anymore. For me, I broke the song down. Practicing over and over again line line of the song first. Building up muscle memory in my thumbs kind of like how I did when I learned to play Ukulele only I closed my eyes after forming a chord in the right position and focused on how my hand felt and even later held the position my hand made to form that chord and look at it as if it was hand sign language and I was using my hand to show what chord to play. I built up muscle memory. And by doing this I was soon able to play Ukulele and guitar without looking at the strings anymore because ai was using my minds eye for it... Now with Kalimba, if I want to play a song I just learned, I don't picture the tablature or the chord letters. I picture the numbers and I each sentence in the song is like a new phone number to memorize. Andis you break down the song and play small parts of it over and over and over it helps you remember and pretty soon your able to to look at the number and no where to go from there so it does get easier and less complicated in your head. So for me, the numbers seem much more easier to follow. But it can be alittle confusing. I'm not exactly sure what a professional Kalimba player would say in what exercises should I do to help me remember where all the numbers are on my kalimba without having to SEE the numbers on there. The problem is, your eyes having to be fast and quick to go lef to right constantly trying to make sure both your thumbs hit the right key. So therefore you do need to learn the nunber sequence on kalimba. But how would a professional suggest you to do that? Any ideas or advice to share I'd love to hear it. Also is there any other youtube channels that are great in teaching beginners I should look up for my husband and I? And is there any song books that teach both number and letter notations for each song and maybe comes with a DVD tutorial of several songs to learn to play? I've downloaded Gstrings to tune my kalimba but it's not as accurate at times. What would you suggest is the very best digital tuner to buy for kalimba that hooks on to it? I downloaded Sound Brennor metronome app. Cause you apparently need a metronome to help you practice playing your Kalimba in some of these exercises I've been doing at 60 bpm or 80 bpm. (Beats per minute) And you can even create and exercise or song Playlist that has the best already set up. It's nee to me so I don't know alot about it. Also how am I suppose to know what bps my metronome needs to be set to by the song? And I also downloaded the free app Kalimba tabs. It shows both nunber and letter notations plus includes a TH-cam video for you to play along by. You can choose easy or intermediate or hard song. All 3 of these apps are free on Android playstore if yall are interested. If anybody knows any other great free apps please share with me.

Your videos are always well done and extremely helpful! Thank you. I'd like to offer an observation about the difference between using the numbers and the letter notations to read the music. *The numbers have a pattern that can be helpful to follow. There is a logical pattern of how the numbers are placed on the tine board.* I am not normally drawn to remembering random numbers but I am drawn to remembering patterns. One needs to have a basic understanding of the letter notations and their placement on sheet music in order to recognize a pattern on this instrument. A beginner with no music knowledge could learn quite quickly by using the number notations. Just a thought...

@@TipsKalimba I took a 17-Key kalimba! She's really cute :D At the time of choosing I was full of doubts, but then I found your channel and it helped me a lot to choose
Coming from the piano, I can't use the letters on a kalimba because they are jumbled up and not in the same order. Using the number system is easier, but I also wish the numbers were 1-17 with odds on one side and evens on the other. The dot symbols are hard to keep up with when they switch evens and odds.
Still not sure what way's best for me to learn. I like the visual of someone actually playing and looking the finger placements, but somehow when I try to follow tabs, I find it confusing and sometimes have to count which tine it is. So far, besides a few songs I am trying to "copy" just by looking at the videos in slow motion and looking at where the fingers are, I have just been going by trial an error to replicate songs that I like. Hopefully one day I can play them in one shot without any mistakes. I also need to try to embellish them and not just replicate the melody alone.
I always forgets people's names or numbers but I can easily remember people's faces more than their names so yeah I'm on the visuals side which is I'm a tablature reader I guess... My fave ulam Karekare, Sinigang na baboy with gabi, I love Ramen and Samgyupsal too as for drinks I love Matcha and water...Just thinking about it makes me salivate hahaha I miss 🇵🇭... You can try searching these terms "ktabs", kalimba notation, letter notation, or number notation. Usually this will bring you to notes our kalimba family has made :) ❤️
For me, I prefer numbers because I can more quickly move through a sequence of numbers (3672) instead of the same corresponding letters on the musical scale (EABD). I only have the most basic understanding of notes on sheet music too.

For example, the holds on a Ukulele starting with the top 4th chord is G, next down is C, then next down is E, and the last string which is the 1st string and bottom chord is A.
So you need to remember in order sequence from top to bottom...
G, C, E, A....
It cooluld be something like Good for G
C for Children
E for Eat
A for apples
Put it together...
(Beats per minute)
And you can even create and exercise or song Playlist that has the best already set up.

There is a logical pattern of how the numbers are placed on the tine board.*
I am not normally drawn to remembering random numbers but I am drawn to remembering patterns.
One needs to have a basic understanding of the letter notations and their placement on sheet music in order to recognize a pattern on this instrument.
A beginner with no music knowledge could learn quite quickly by using the number notations.
Just a thought...
Well, if you had a photographic memory, you wouldn't necessarily choose tablature because you can remember anything, so you could use either.
I would be listening to my lecture classes so well if you are the one delivering the lecture :D You make learning so much fun and joyful urghhhhh love it so much ! !

I’ve just learned there are TWO methods in tablature for 17 tine kalimbas. There’s the 5-painted tines of April Yang (2017) and the 6-painted tines of Hugh Tracey (2007). Oh, my! @@TipsKalimba I took a 17-Key kalimba! She's really cute :D
At the time of choosing I was full of doubts, but then I found your channel and it helped me a lot to choose

Quick question! Is there a way to memorise letters with the 7 keys (Do-Re-Mi...etc)?
can someone please tell me what comes after F3 in F MAJOR SCALE?
For me, I prefer numbers because I can more quickly move through a sequence of numbers (3672) instead of the same corresponding letters on the musical scale (EABD). I only have the most basic understanding of notes on sheet music too.
