So the following tips on how to take care of the kalimba are based on my personal experiences. Again, all of our kalimbas are different. From the material of the tines to the wood and finish used on the body of the kalimba.
So when you do try to apply these tips, see how the kalimba reacts. if it is something that works for you.

Question: what is the thing called to protect my acrylic kalimba from scratches?
so i looked up all the terms and this is what they call them:
scratch resistant pads (kimi's definition)
protector pad

I just got my first Kalimba today ! I love it , I choose the perfect Color ( bleu , deep blue ). I hope I can play a song soon XD. And YES your video help me a lot, like how to tune the kalimba ( it’s really hard to tune the 2 last in the left and right corner 😅, the app tuner cannot recognize it well . Woahhh! That's such a beautiful color! 😍 Okay here is a tip, when you tune, make sure everything is quiet, no tv, aircon, electricfan. Then if it still doesn't hear it, put your Kalimba on top of your phone :)

Hmmm. What i would do is if you have a cloth? Place rubbing alcohol on the cloth then wipe your Kalimba clean. Wait for it to dry, then do it one more time but with a different cloth. I hope this helps.

Good video, but I miss any information how to care for the wood of the kalimba. My HT kalimba comes with a little information paper that says: "Wood can be moisturized with shea butter, oil or wood conditioner - wipe on, let sit for 30 minutes, wipe off. Monthly treatment should prevent cracking and beautififes the wood." I am using the shea butter :)
Hi Petra! Well, it's something I haven't tried or done yet, so i didn't include it since it's not something that I have tested. Though i did read something about it :) thank you for sharing that to all by the way. I'm sure those who are curious about this will get a lot from this comment of yours.

i was planning to buy kalimba from lazada but the one i'm planning to buy can't be connected to the amplifier, i was wondering is it possible to play louder? idk if it makes sense but thank you for the video!♡♡♡
Oooh! Well if you really want to to be loud there are attachable pickups that you can place. From my experience, i don't have an amplifier but i do have a mic for when i record music with it 😄

😳 I'm actually not aware...I haven't dropped mine yet! 🤣 I don't plan on doing that either, so I'll just take your word that it'll be disastrous! Thanks for the vid! I didn't know they get stiff when not in use. I was wondering why it was sounding better and playing easier with each practice session. 😆
I'm curious about the silica gels and keeping it dry. Where I live it gets extremely dry in the winter and for our guitars, violins, etc we put a humidifier (wet sponge encased in plastic) in the case when we put them away. Otherwise they're prone to getting too dry and cracking. It seems to me since the Kalimba I ordered is made of wood I might have the same issue.
Would that be true?
That's a good observation! Haven't tried experiencing that climate, so you can do what you think works for you. Especially if you noticed that this was helpful for your other instruments. I do suggest that you check on them from time to time to see how the tines and the body of the kalimba reacts.
How long would a kalimba last on average if taken care of properly?
I have started the kalimba for over 2 years now and they are still well and functional. I can say they last long ❤️

I have some scratches on my kalimba and I was looking for a cushion for it but I can't find it I even wanted to use a acrylic scratch remover but I'm scared that it will damage my kalimba 😢
Oooh I haven't heard of an Acrylic scratch remover. Hmmm. How about try it on a small spot that is quite unnoticable to see how it reacts?

Hi! Well, it's not supposed to fall off. Though there are some cheap kalimbas that have factory defect which causes a certain key to fall off. Return the kalimba right away if this is the case. :)

Fine tuning, yes. Think of it like guitar strings... There will come a time that you need to check if the strings are still in tune.

Silica is not actually dangerous. It is just rocks. It is not toxic. I suppose it could potentially be a choking hazards for very small children.

Hello! I have an acrylic kalimba which I've been playing nearly nonstop! A few nights ago I left it in my car overnight in under freezing temperatures. When I played it again I noticed 6' was not resonating. Am I imagining things? Is it because it's a higher key and I only noticed it because I I working I had hurt it by leaving it in the cold? Help!
I've dropped my hollow kalimba several times 😭 til it has a lot of scratches on the body. And i've dropped it on the tines too. It really broke my heart 😭

I always put a handkerchief arround my kalimba when I am using it because there are times that my hands sweat especially if it is hot💜 I just bought a kalimba a week ago and now I know how to play eight songs💞
Is it normal to get some nail scratches under the tines? I just got my 1st kalimba last week and I accidentally scratched the wood when I played the stiff keys 🥺 it was tough to control the strength of my left thumb (the marks are actually only visible if light reflects them, but since it's still new, it still breaks my heart abit)
I have a question. Can you place/leave your Kalimba in hot places? My room is hot idky.
Try not to place it directly on the sun, but aside from that, i think you're good. But to be sure let me double check that.

Hello :) I have been watching your videos a lot lately, I did watch the one with the different kalimba sounds, but I’m scared if it’s different in real life from the video, so I’ve a question, which one, in your opinion sounds... like it has a deep sound, and an echo?
Hi sarah! You could go with a hollow Kalimba, but i haven't found a good one yet. Because commonly with the hollow one is the tines are somehow stiff on the highest ones. Compared to your flatboard, all their keys are resonating. And from what I've experienced, the Gecko17cap is the loudest flatboard. Though the hollow kalimba is still the loudest. So do consider these. :)
I had a ton of those silica bag things but I had no idea what to do with them so I threw them all away. Should've watched this video before throwing them out 😭
I see a lot of videos on maintenance for wooden Kalimbas, but what about acrylic? I would love a more in depth video on how to care for an acrylic kalimba if you wouldn't mind.

My Precious Mama always told me that she wanted to play a harp at the feet of Jesus someday in Heaven. She passed away on 1/6/21 - I miss her terribly. I realize the kalimba is not a harp but I love the sweet sound it makes and I believe she would have too. My grieving heart needed to find its focus on something uplifting- I ran across a kalimba advertisement for a tiny handheld kalimba and instantly felt joy at the thought of learning how to play it - I bought one and knew I’d love to play this instrument on a larger scale. I have just ordered my wooden and acrylic whale kalimba from Amazon and while I wait for it to be delivered I came to TH-cam for some newbie tips. So glad I found your channel - I’m a new subbie and look forward to learning from you. You are an excellent teacher, thank you for this channel.

@@TipsKalimba uhhh embarrassing story XD so ummm my little sibling pets were eating chips and then they wanted to play some "baby songs" on my kalimba and they spread grease all over it then they went to wash their hands BUT did not dry them so it is wet and oily and they were also ripping my stickers off of my kalimba and sticking it onto each other's faces

Well, best thing to do is try to cover it up with a design if it really bothers you :)

I bought a Gecko CAP kalimba,but CAP kalimba doesn't come with a case.Should I keep it in a room with low temperature or it doesn't matter?
hi Lana! mine is just in normal air, i have never placed my geckocap in any case, but it's still good. just always wipe after using :D

Got mine from lazada, and shopee. Though if you are outside asia amazon is fine and I've been hearing others use gokalimba. They seem to like it. :)
