    Mikko here! Fun fact: I actually made the cabinet section for that Plini plugin you're using! I used the same exact speaker for the Mega 4x12 Green 2004 cab in MIKKO2. 😊

      Wanted to say thanks for this Mikko. And, as well as the sound, the interface is really well done too. Just the right balance between clean and functional, and nodding toward what it represents.

    The best thing about the Mikko is that it is the first time when I’ve found multiple great IR sounds with one mic and speaker. Remember trying it and finding 8 keeper settings that I exported later and all were equally good just different. Never happened to me before.

    • @mlsoundlab
      @mlsoundlab ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is the reality when micing up cabs. I can find several good sounding spots and would choose a different one for different situations. It's really not possible to include that many options in an IR collection.

    very cool. i've been pretty satisfied with the new helix cabs, but this is a really badass plugin overall that provides endless flexibility in a easy to use GUI.
    between this, tonex, and native there's probably very little guitar related stuff you can't do in your DAW. all for the price of a good condenser microphone.... recording guitar has never been this accessible. also, there's 100% going to be people who try to sell IR packs they made with this lmao.

    I use the Strymon Iridium when not using my amp and like you said, when you buy IR’s you get so many it can be overwhelming. Which ones sound great? So I bought a TC Electronic Impulse loader pedal for $100. It holds up to 99 IR’s and I can A/B them. My Iridium never sounded so good! Love your channel John!

  • @saddestchord7622
    @saddestchord7622 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sounds really, really nice, but over the years I've already bought some great IRs and with the new(ish) Helix cabs, I don't think it can possibly improve my sound enough to justify $200. I'd like to have it but there are a ton of things I need or want more. I'd recommend York IRs instead. The price is reasonable and you don't get folders with a million files in them, so you avoid the option paralysis that comes with that. Any York IR you choose is going to sound great. It's just a question of figuring out which goes with your amp, then you focus on playing.

    5 or so years ago, aftermarket IRs like York or Ownhammer were well ahead of the pack in terms or sound quality...right now, can't justify buying them anymore. Stock IRs from Overloud or IK sounds just as good if not better and I'm also a fan of ML

    Hey all, I keep telling John that he's gonna hit 100,000 subscribers by the end of Q2 2023. He doesn't believe it. Help me prove him wrong LOL. if you actually DO like what you are seeing while the video is playing, maybe just hit the Like button?
    It all adds up, every bit matters. Don't do it if it is not truly something you like, but I bet a lot more of the 6000 or so views on this video were by people who dug what john plays and the style in which he delivers info, lessons, reviews, opinions, and insights.
    Cheers all. I would love to see John's channel growth explode the way I think it deserves. :-)

  • @picksalot1
    @picksalot1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very cool. 👍 Even though I don't use 3rd Party IRs, it's abundantly clear that the Menu diving necessary to find the sound you want in many IR Packages is so large as to be self defeating and too time consuming.
    Does Mikko's software include a few sample licks so the user can adjust the settings and not have their attention divided between playing, listening, and adjusting parameters?
    Maybe Mikko will consider doing something similar for different types of Pickups/models. 😎

    Seems very similar to the VIR tech in Tonex, but with export, Seems nice for plugins like Neural DSP or Tonex. I'm not sure how effectively the IRs will translate to modeler units with the export function because of the amp model differences between plugins and stand alone units like the Helix..

    • @givemeajackson
      @givemeajackson ปีที่แล้ว

      what differences between plugins and hardware modellers? they work exactly the same, there's even a plugin version of helix.

    • @jwright8838
      @jwright8838 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@givemeajackson If you have Helix Native and a Helix, I would think it would work well as long as your direct signal to your computer was from the Helix or tuned similar in your interface (matched impedance and such). I was simply mentioning that an IR tuned for a Neural DSP plugin might not give you the same results for your Helix model. I think it would work great for Tonex or Helix Native to export to those respective hardware units.

    • @givemeajackson
      @givemeajackson ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jwright8838 the difference between a good interface with a high impedance switch or input and the stomp's DI is minimal, though i have yet to find an interface that has as little noise as the HX stomp.
      with the same IR, you can bring helix native, hardware helix and a somewhat related NDSP plugin to sound basically identical. for example the petrucci vs the helix mk IV lead are both very accurate representations of a mesa mk style amps. if a modeller or plugin does its job properly, the same amp models will all sound very similar with the same IRs. and for most of the market that is indeed the case.

    • @jwright8838
      @jwright8838 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@givemeajackson Eh...I disagree about the interface impedance. **Edit(I mis-read your statement...I agree if you match the dry tone impedance to what you have on your modeler, your results should be great)**. Tone can be such a subjective thing I never argue with anyone about what they hear with their ears. I found the impedance selection for the Helix/HX Stomp to be a great idea, but wasn't a fan of how it interacted with my guitars. JC and others seem to love it. To each his own, when it comes to guitar tone.

    Is this is just a single IR capture with a fancy UI so that when the 'mic' is moved a simple eq curve is applied ? if so this is why I have fab filter pro eq ? which I apply in the mix. Or is this actual multi IR mic positions captured producing actual equalisation at these positions like in the real world. Comments welcome.

    • @adamtremblett
      @adamtremblett ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They can be exported, so as long as your modeler can import IRs they should be compatible. John demonstrates the export at @11:09. You would then need to import the IR to your hardware device.

But then I bought one of those Yorkaudio Mesa IR packs and was blown away.. the first IR mix of two mics I tried sounded WAY better than the 5 mic combination I came up with on Ml Sound Lab.
