Mat (42) and Savanna (18) have been singing together for 2 years. They have little formal training. They have produced 6 albums in those 2 years. Their arranger and accompanist is Stephen Nelson.
Absolutely stunning. Props to the arranger / producer, but what superb material they have to work with! I'll also second Mike Nolan's appreciation of BYU Noteworthy: their Christmas release this year is gorgeous!
OK, I have to make two confessions: first, I had to look up Mat and Savanna Shaw (I know, where have I been?); second, when the first broke away into "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" I wasn't sure how I felt about the pairing with "Carol of the Bells." But I paused your reaction, went and listened to it three times and I get it. It works musically, lyrically, and thematically. I'm a believer. And Vocal Point, I mean what words do them justice! Great reaction as usual...your analysis is informative, and your enthusiasm is contagious! Thanks for bringing this one to my attention!!

This is a beautiful collaboration between Matt and Savannah from Utah and BYU from Utah!! Be sure to listen to Mountain savanna‘s Christmas song where are you Christmas where Savannah‘s little sister sings with them as well… They also do a collaboration with the other daddy daughter you are of Claire and Dave Crosby singing the Christmas song! Nice to see you react to react to VP from my alma mater. I first saw them perform on campus 28 years ago and they were amazing back then. Their arrangement of Kiss From a Rose... WOW! The best part of them is they are all students so their sound is constantly evolving. Vocal Point is BYU's choir that changes singers every few years just like the BYU Men's choir and the Women's choir. There's so much talent at BYU and almost everyone sings and/or plays at least one instrument. Walking across campus you hear at least 15 different languages because almost everyone served missions throughout the world. Lindsay Sterling got her start while attending BYU and did most of her videos between classes. It was so cool to hike up to the Y half way up one of the Rocky mountains next to campus and have devotionals and sing while watching the sunset. Thought you would enjoy some context for this magical campus.
BTW, if you have not seen their Nearer my God to Thee, you have to check it out. Bring tissues! Their, This is the Greatest Show, Frozen and Beauty and the Beast Medleys are also top notch, especially for college students!
A former member of Vocal Point (McKay) is the groups artistic director and producer. He's been doing this since a couple years after he graduated years ago. He was insanely good in the group and his talent as an arranger and producer has only grown. He is extremely talented and as I'm sure you know Vocal Point demand the best from those that actually make it into the group.
If you haven't seen it, check out PTX doing the same song on BTUTV Christmas Under the Stars Special. The whole show is great, Carol of Bells starts at @ 25:05. We Saw Three Ships is also great with their backing percussion track. 'Recording of Evergreen" shows them laying it down as well as a terrific insight into how they put their work together.

It has been a few years since we have listened to Mat and Savanna. It's hard to remember their sound from then but they do sound great now!
