  • After the defeat of the Noldor and their allies at the Dagor Bragollach, Fingolfin, believing the fate of his people to be utterly lost, rides to Morgoth’s black gate… “and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking that Oromë [Vala of the hunt] himself was come: for a great madness of rage was upon him, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar. Thus he came alone to Angband’s gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came.”

Greatest part of the greatest book ever written. Inspired a shit ton of great visual art, and you picked a good piece. But this song sure is overrated. Nothing works here.

How so? I'm a life-long Tolkien fan, and I absolutely adore this entire album. Is it just the fact that it's metal and Tolkien very likely wouldn't have liked the genre? The lyrics definitely resonate with the courage and despair of the duel.

@@rileycord1248 Well I like Summoning and have my doubts about Tolkien liking it. So it's not that. This is just overall clumsy piece imo.

It's easy to "criticize" something if you speak nebulously on it and don't actually explain what's wrong about it properly. What value or insight musically is offered by just saying a song is clumsy and not offering a genuine explanation of what you mean? It just comes across as trying to get a rise out of people which can achieved in far more efficient ways than this.

If this wasn't meant to be done, why has Christopher said nothing about it? Also goes with black metal band Morgoth.
