Volkswagen Passat Alltrack 2020 - It's a Lifted Wagon, Not an SUV (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Volkswagen Passat Alltrack is a separate model for people, who sometimes go off the beaten path, they somethings need to tow something, and they need a lot of cargo space. Sounds like an SUV, but this a lifted wagon.
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat Alltrack has 174 mm ground clearance, 27.5 mm more, than the standard estate version. The car comes with permanent 4MOTION AWD system as standard. The VW Passat Alltrack gets some protection around the sills, fenders, and under the car as well.

My wife bought Passat 12 years ago, and still loves it. Has cost her around 500 Pounds in repair costs over that time - a tailgate motor replaced, and one constant velocity joint 'boot'. I've never owned a VW myself, but am into my second Skoda. Haven't spent a penny on them in nine years, and only one warranty job which was fixed in a day.

In terms of the AWD system, I have the 2018 Golf Alltrack and it's done well in about 5-8" of snow uphill about a 30deg angle depending on tires. Can get up my driveway which is steeper. Winter tires help but more for braking, the car has no issue getting started on the all-seasons I had. Ground clearance is good for any softroading you'd need to get to a trailhead. I'm thoroughly impressed with the performance on asphalt and gravel, would buy again (used again cuz I'm not THAT rich :D). Would assume the offroading part of the Passat is just as good as my car.

Being from Canada, and having a car that has sport suspension that is lower than normal, and dragging the bottom of my car winter after winter along the snow makes me realize that these kinds of alternatives are great. e.g. the Audi Allroad. This doesn't come to Canada so it's the Allroad or the Golf Alltrack.
Thumbs up for smartassing review from me!

Facelifted Skoda Superb Scout is the same car....but bigger, prettier, more practical and cheaper. AWD wagons are always better than SuVs on the road and on slightky rutted tracks. But you cant go green-laning in them. But the extra security of AWD and a coupla extra inches of ride height is great.

Hi, Marek! Just curious: what happens if you bring back the test car to the dealership with some plastic bits missing because of off-road testing?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

I don't test dealer cars. At the country/regional HQ level there is something called the press car fleet. This is where journalists usually get their test cars from.
As to what happens in case of an accident that depends on how the press fleet is managed. In case of VW for example I tore the lower bumper skirting from a Tiguan (its departure angle is insufficient :) ). We just filled out an insurance claim, and that was all.
Some brands don't bother. AFAIR Fiat press cars in Poland only get the third party insurance, but Fiat doesn't bother with full insurance, because they will either fix it themselves or scrap the car.
How does causing minor (or not so minor) damage to press cars affect my relationship with the press office? First of all, accidents happen. Secondly, I try to be adult about it, and if I break something, I often call right away, and sometimes offer to bring the car back in immediately so that they can start fixing it, so that the car doesn't spend too much time unused. The press fleet is there for publications, so the longer a car is off duty, the more money is lost.
I know some people say "it was like this, I didn't do it" or just hand the car over quickly, preferably after dark. This kind of childish behaviour doesn't help maintaining a good relationship.
Obviously, if you keep doing stupid things, they will stop lending you cars or put you at the end of the queue. Sports cars and off roaders are the "high risk" cars, because if they are to be tested properly, they should be put in their natural environment. Usually any track activity requires permission or at least I ask if that's OK. I sometimes declined a test car on the basis that I would not be able to test it the way it ought to be tested.

1:10 reminds me of when I've let a beginner drive for a short while on a paved country road (2 way) and she got too close to the side that she went off-road with the right side (100km/h and a few obstructions coming up ahead) And I might just have PTSD from it so this made me uncomfortable. Important to note that the road was completely empty and completely straight, no reason for her to go off the road. I'm not letting a beginner drive ever again.

yeah, something wrong with this world, there's no way passat can cost 63k. I've bought a new SUV with 238 bhp, 8 stage Aisin gearbox, fully loaded with stuff like ACC, leather, heated seats and windows, for only 33k euro. And I still think it is expensive 😂

We have passat gt executive edition 2021 with nearly all equipment you want. It has travel assist digital cockpit ergo comfort seats led matrix lights all we connect services. You name it and it cost a bit over 40000 euro but we have it as company car that you can drive privatly too in sweden and its pretty cheap then we pay like 250$ a month in extra taxes and thats all. The rest of The cost our company is paying.

They are fantastic cars to drive. I just would not want to pay msrp and have an engine failure 3 years later. But buying new is stupid in most cases anyways.

@@dragosvestemean4229 The RAV4 is a useless crossover. Of wich the world does not need any more.
And calling the Passat boring and identity-less and suggesting a Crossover that can be had with FWD!!! in the same sentence is quite funny to me.
Crossovers are the epitome of boring and most importantly useless cars the don't serve any purpose apart from giving elderly people an easier ingress and egress.

The quality of the materials. th-cam.com/video/O3Cu0hcsoGA/w-d-xo.html I've checked both Superb and Passat and you can clearly see that the buttons on the Skoda are of a different quality from those from the VW. They are not the same.

But at 27,000€ it's a great price for a family car, I would save 2,000€ and get the regular Variant Passat.
