Solar Powered Opal Mining Leads To Rare Petrified/Opalized Wood Find!

  • Onwards and upwards! Noah and I decide to mine the barley touched second level of our opal mine, it’s dusty thankless work but the rewards are worth the labour!
The most unique aspect of this weeks work is that we are running solely on Ecoflow River 2 Pros which are power stations charged by solar panels.
Effectively our whole operation has gone green!
I honestly didn’t know it would be possible to run a jackhammer even a little one off a power station and I was surprised by the results!
After a bit of dust and dirt was shifted I found I had blown through a large rock containing opal shotgunned through it! This happens some times in blows and hard cap closer to the surface.
Still a good sign we persisted on until Noah discovered a branch or trunk of an ancient tree that had not only become petrified but also opalized!
It was an amazing find but the best was yet to come! Unfortunately we didn’t have the cameras rolling for the whole process (sometimes you just want to enjoy the moment and not film).
It was a successful opal hunt and we hope you guys enjoy the end results which we took the time to slice and film!
We hope you all enjoyed the video please leave us a comment and tell us what you would like to see more or less of.

Just received my pay dirt and small vile with opal chips from you. That paydirt was the star of the show! Reds, greens lovely blues! I was overwhelmed. I put the paydirt in a gold pan and ran water into it. So great to touch dirt from across the world. Talk about a challenging clay body to recover from. I have a whole new appreciation for you opal hunters. But pay dirt, and vial of chips was well worth the money and then some. Thank you!

10:08 Duuuuuuuuude! That's baller! I bet someone would really like one of those chunks to use for knife handles. There are some pretty prolific knife makers on TH-cam such as Kyle Royer who might like to use some sturdy opalized wood like that. Kind of a dream material honestly, possibly even worth more than the $400 a chunk if you have a combination of 1. Beauty 2. Sturdiness 3. Brightness.

the petrified wood ive seen out in arizona has hardly any fire opal in it. I wonder if it depends on the type of tree. I think the species of tree that turned into stone had hardly any tree sap in them out here in arizona. I think the tree sap and the bugs trapped within the tree bark is what creates opalized petrified wood. Those petrified wood out in Australia is LOADED with opals though!!! lucky!!! IDK about any of this knowledge though i am just an amature.

That's awesome that you can power your drills via solar; I wish we could do that! I suppose it's technically possible as our compressor is electric but draws around 50kW so a proper solar farm is necessary. As it stands, we use similar solar-charged battery packs at the mine cabin to power our lights, two-way radios, and other small electronics.

I would put some spring steel around that roto hammer bit and make it kick back and forth rather than just kick in a rotary direction. Weld a spring steel with one side higher and it will cause a push and pull, or hammer and strike motion rather than a spin real hard action.

It actually had over 50% charge when we left. We where honestly surprised with how well it went! Doesn’t have the same power as diesel generator but for odd jobs like this it was perfect!

Too frigging gorgeous for words. Loving those little ecoflow boxes because I just looked up power production in Aussie and it's almost exclusively made by the burning of coal and natural gas. I would've thought Aussie would've been a perfect place for massive solar arrays, wind and wave power generation. Not that I'm being anti-Aus when Aotearoa-New Zealand has been burning stinking coal as well. Considering how dirty a business a lot of mining types in Aussie have and continue to be, good on you guys for doing what you can to go green. You may have to ditch the diesel vehicles next.

If the electricity they are using to charge the ecoflows is from coal and gas-fired plants ...

why dont you use more UV light when working underground? would make spotting opal so much easier as it would light up big time. seems like a no brainer to me.

Oi!!! Howzit, fellas? I was wondering who you would suggest I get in touch with, to get a $100 chunky bit of potch and color, for carving practice. I want to learn to carve animals, and shapes, and such. But don't want to waste quality opal, and feel like just plain potch would be a little too boring.

Hey fellas...are you guys doing any online opal sales? If so could ya pop us a link when ya get time? Hell, I'd be interested in even some low grade opalish potch. I'd rather fund yr cause than any of the other big shots..cheers from Michigan in the USA

Are the 'specie' pieces sold on eBay, or do you guys find local buyers for that material? I checked out the store but didn't see anything there. You should clean up those opalized limb cast segments a little and make pendants out of them, put silver bezels around them and make them collector pieces or pendants. They look nice the natural color they are, I hope whoever gets them doesn't "treat" them in any way to darken the stones.

All listed on our Etsy and yes I agree untreated is the way to go. They just need a good polish with tin oxide or cerium :)
