A little JB weld will fix her right up 😂😂 looks like there was a flaw in the casting on that crank like a small air bubble or a tiny void in the casting when they poured the steel in the mold. It happens !!!
Brandon that crankshaft can be replaced without removing block or head, I've done it before, had a 720 that broke right in the left rod journal. Just have to push pistons up and finagle some.
Collins equipment in Thorntown, Indiana. Chris should be able to fix you up with a crank. 720 is my favorite two, I like the look of a narrow front though. Yea, I know, the wide front is worth more.
OUCH, sorry to see that problem arise. It's in good hands though and will be back up and running no doubt. Sometimes life throws curveballs and then people only get stronger and wiser. Great video and thank you for bringing us along.
You could never bore me working on one of the old 2 cyl tractors, love them. Like you I can’t imagine why a crankshaft that big would snap like that, unless it already had a fault in the metal, but it looks like a fresh break to me. Great rain on newly down crops too 👍
Well that was interesting. I'm 63 and I've never heard of one of those breaking. First time for everything I guess. Always something when it comes to farming. Nice rainy day project.
always wondered how those 2cyl dsl held up lot of unbalance always loved 730 dsl in the days we had several turned up around here pull 4/16 steerable cant believe they held up they would blow some black smoke hope you can find a good crank those are getting old
For some reason I thought I've heard of this happening because of stress during shutdown. A way to avoid it was to decompress the engine while shutting off the fuel. I'm not sure if this is something you already do, but I thought lt was reasonable idea since I've never operated a 720 D. I think it was a self taught thing by the old timers. Anyway best of luck and hopefully won't cost too many dollars.
Well, at least it's not an airplane engine. My boss along time ago had a single engine Comanche. While in flight it developed a slight miss which progressively got worse until bang. At that point they declared an emergency and were given clearance to land. The control tower then asked the nature of the emergency. My boss replied "metal to metal contact in the engine". Once he touched down and shut the engine off it promptly locked up. The block was undamaged but the FAA has a little rule about incidents like that and condemned the engine so it was sold to a guy who wanted it for an air boat. I heard you mention New Paris Tractor parts. I thought they closed up. Are they still operating?
Lol well I could understand why the grounded that engine that's kinda serious to take a chance on....New Pairs Tractor parts is no longer but I still stay in contact with Rich
more than likely when the crank was reground thay didnt grint the filet radius at the edge of the journals that will always cause breakage on a diesel or hi po eng
So, I got a problem with this old B! Only got high side gears,3,5, & 6! I got it apart, the high & low slide is broken! I just might take a bar, slide it to the high side, and drive it, won't have 1,2, 4, & reverse!
That is such a bummer to see a broken crank on the 720. It truly pumped its little guts out ! Sorry couldn’t resist. Got to make lite of the problem, to help you feel better about it.
George I feel your pain. I had a water skiing “mishap” at 70 when I was 17. It was the beginning of the end of my back. Real bad day. That’s a bummer about dad’s baby. But I know when you get done with it Brando he’ll have an awesome tractor to play with!!
Excellent video Brandon :) also hope get another Crankshaft and at first thought right one piston caps broken of one bolt lose and gave gap on the other one ! But was lots more than that what showed up video taken apart and yes rain sure help hear in Ontario and Quebec side of Wild Fires going on to and need lots them all out !
Judging by the smoothness of the break, I would say that was a metallurgical failure. I bet that crank had that problem for a while and it just happened to let go now. Parts should be available, good luck with the search! My grandfather loved his two cylinder Deere's.
nothing so sad as a broken crank shaft! I hope that you are able to find a replacement pretty. fast, the worse part is the not knowing what caused the failure. oh well happy rebuilding good luck. barry
WOW, that is a heavy duty crankshaft. Must have been a defect in the metal and heat treating. I bet that problem was created in the John Deere Factory a lot of years ago. Enjoy the 2 cylinder video's, I have 4 of them, Late A, Late B, Early B, and Early H. Take care.
It's really hard to tell what happened to it who knows it could have been dropped on the floor at some point....you have a nice collection of tractors!
Wilson was supervising, making sure you did the work correctly....
720s and 70s had a real problem with breaking cranks
Stroke was too short causing too much stress
Lind bros from Corydon probably have one. If they do they will haul it up to you when they go to Polks sale this weekend
Thank you!
Any dates on the rod or crank bearings to maybe get an idea when it was worked on before?
We don't see any
6/13/23 we got 2.1'' of rain. South central Kansas.
We got 1.5" of rain total
Get the old Lincoln buzz box and weld the crank back together! Lol!
🤣🤣🤣
Great video thanks Brandon and Dad and George
I thought you said something new Paris tractor parts. I thought they closed down?
They are closed but I'm still friends with the owner Rich

Father in laws 70 diesel did the same thing. Was spraying with it and suddenly it didn’t sound right.
The crazy thing is this one never changed sound

Thank you we have found a few cranks but nothing set in stone yet
Three jaw pullers are your friend
I suppose the 720 just went off of warrantee……
I just filled out the warranty card today that was in the owners manual we will see if John Deere honors it 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Where did Dads strength go to?? Not in the videos anymore

Yes it is surprising how well they hold up...we have found a few cranks
There are some other TH-camrs out there that weld those back together and then machine them. You may need send it to Pakistan though…. Lol!!!
I was just going to say this isn't Pakistan 🤣🤣🤣
We had a 720 broke crank didn't do much damage was a good tractor had alot of hours on it ours broke in the rod
Be sure and video when you put it back together. Great videos, I watch them all. Thanks
I definitely will!

O crap😮 . YESTERDAY TRACTOR PARTS could have what you need . Most likely had a stress crack compounded by loose bearings. Great video. thanks
more than likely when the crank was reground thay didnt grint the filet radius at the edge of the journals that will always cause breakage on a diesel or hi po eng
Smooth operator.

You should have pick-up when the extended warranty guy called !
🤣🤣🤣

Get the Milwaukee cordless pump they are completely awesome
I've been wanting to get one
I saw a 720 crank break on the other end…the flywheel passed the tractor.

Darn it I expected it to last more than 50 or 75 years.....
I was trying for 80 years lol
nothing so sad as a broken crank shaft! I hope that you are able to find a replacement
pretty. fast, the worse part is the not knowing what caused the failure. oh well happy

Hey Brandon that’s a bummer about the crankshaft. Glad you guys are getting some good rain 🌧️
Starke County on the hat? I grew up in the south east corner of a Starke County.
Starke county Indiana right?

I thought he said the rod journal had been turned down. That will make one break because I know from experience.
I bought the same pump but mind came with a water hose sparyer on the end it workd pretty good for what it is
The shipping is probably going to cost more than the crankshaft. That’s a big chunk o steel 😳
Most likely lol
I wonder is it possible to number each episode on this project . I get behind and then find them out of sequence
I bet at some time in its life some one lug the piss out of it We had one if you lug hard enough it would run back wards good luck
Just like cars probably made on a Monday or Friday HA HA
Probably broke because of shoddy work from the last guy who had his hands in there.
That’s crazy it started and drove on the trailer like that then wouldn’t that is definitely broken you don’t see that very often thanks for sharing
