Joe uses a lot of plugins to mix multiple vocals, which plugin is your go-to for mixing vocals? Comment below!
Excellent info, well explained and detailed insight... Thanks Warren and Joe!
Free lisp desser which I think is very bad haha. Stock calkwalk EQ for some sharp cuts, API 550, SSL E, LALA opto comp. : )
These seem to always sneak into my vocal chain: TDR SLICK EQ GE (yes the GE version), Black Box HG-2, MV-2 (a gem !!) and sometimes also some of these; Acustica Audio CREAM2, TDR NOVA GE (for surgery), Slate AIR, AMEK 200, Phils Cascade, CLA-2A, KIIVE warmy, YUM spread (haas mode), NI supercharger. Well ... the first three !!
Rvox, Lindell 80, Noiseash, ArturiaFET76, Arturia PreTridA
My go-to is the Sonitus multiband compressor. I use it to tame the performance, pull the warmth of the low end up a bit (I always record with a high pass filter so there's never any low-end rumble to deal with) and control the sibilance. That's usually my starting point.
Joe Carrell has a very natural presenting method, it's easy to listen to him for a long time and take in what he's saying and doing. He's also an amazing mixer.Thank you Warren for having Joe on!
WE love what Joe does! He's a wonderful mentor!
Thank you very much. Looking forward to many more videos!
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell oh yes please thanks Joe for everything

One of the best vocal tutorials I've ever watched. Thank you for sharing Joe and Warren! I'd be interested in seeing how Joe tackles guitars
Thank you for watching!
Coming from the rock side where it’s typically one lead vocal out front, I’m really impressed how three powerful vocals were mixed way out front. Cool !
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching! 👊🏼👊🏼✌🏼✌🏼
That automation lesson is really great. And the tutorial is really straight to point. More content from Mr Carrell please.
More one the way!!! Thank you for watching ✌🏼
Absolutely Joe Rocks!
"When Chris is gunning, gotta gun with him". Great tutorial. Way to share, Joe.
😂😂Thank you for watching Steve
Hi Joe.
I know this may sound weird...
...the last pass you did listening all three vocals got tears from my eyes....
Mission accomished!
The mix boosted the melody/emotion/lyrics energy to the roof...
P.S.: I'm NOT a country music listener/fan, But you're "converting me".... 😂
Thank you for the kind words!
Yes finally. Its rare to see videos for such thing specifically
Thanks for watching Greg ✌🏼
My favourite audio engineer, thanks for inviting him
Thank you for watching!
That moment the automation is deleted and you hear how that automation brought the whole performance to life... that was cool.
Automation is so important. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!!🎉🎉
I think the most important on that, is that he prior did a live automation on the vocals, so all the plugins he uses work at their best. Love the guy mindset !
Thank you friend 👊🏼👊🏼✌🏼
The most humble man on the planet and an absolute genius at what he does!👌

Yess!! At last! I'd like to see mixing strings, brass and pop horns, keys, synths and even up to 4 or 6 vocals like a barbershop group or vocalize. It would be interesting bring up to the channel some mixing engineers of musical theatre and plays.
I love recording/mixing brass and strings! I do look forward to sharing on those topics 🎉🎉 thank you for watching ✌🏼✌🏼
Great video Joe!! Thanks Warren for having him on your show!
Thanks a ton Greg!
More to come from Joe here! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Joe! I'd like to see you do a start-to-finish mix video. Cheers!
Thank you Chris! I would love to do that
Great tutorial. Nicely explained. I tend to process each session differently obviously depending if it's super brutal metal or just a solo female voice etc..? I add a little comp and eq on each vocal channel first just to give it a squish and tone shaping before it hits the busses, not a lot, literally -3 max! Then eq those naughty frequencies very gently so I'm not cutting too much in the busses again? Then if I need to manually lift a few quiet notes it's much less than drawing crazy automation patterns all the way through! ;) I also track vocals through a mic pre/comp again just to keep the dynamics a little less wild so it's easier to control later. I don't use many plugins in my chain to get the job done? Waves L2, Fabfilter eq, Soundspot Nebula for some chorus if needed, Sonitus delay and Sanford reverb. Pretty much it most of the time. Just track it well and get the vocalist to give you what you need. Bingo!
Nice to see Joe Carrell adder to the PLAP family. Welcome!
Thank you Larry! Honored to be part of the team

great video, there are so many approaches to do this, every mixer would make it differently, thats the beauty of it, there is no right way, use your tools and your ears.
Thank you, sir plz keep bringing tutorial on Vocal Mixing as I struggle with it

Wow! So much power in automation of vocal levels. Taking it word by word. This is truly an eye opener. Thank you, Joe Carrell. So appreciate you :)
Thank you Rick!
This was amazing content! Thank you! My philosophy for mixing is that the console and tools are a musical instrument that ties everything together. If you learn the technical side of it and sit back and watch it run, you’re at about a high school band level. If you understand and become part of what the writer, the producer, the band, and the vocalists are trying to do, then you become part of the music. You are as vital to the music as any musician.
Thank you Ryan ✌🏼✌🏼
It's great to see Joe on this channel. Like yourself Warren, he has that great ability to explain what and most importantly why he's doing things in the mix. Much appreciated.

So this is what automation curves would have to look like! "Attention to detail" - I guess I'm just having an experience similar to that one you recollected with you first time watching that nashville pro working.
Thanks a lot, Joe! Great input! Would love to see more from you. Anything. Especially your approach to vocal fx, particularly delays and reverbs, and how you choose the right ones.

Great material Joe! I learned a lot, vocals is one of the hardest to make seat just right on the mix. I would like to see how you make instruments to get into their on space in the stereo field.

Thank you so much !!! ❤️ I really found this useful and inspiring because i love stacking vocals especially getting creative around the chorus and the harmonies so i appreciate every intel i can get 🙏🏻 Also i really enjoyed the song ! And that's not a usual thing when it comes to mixing tutorials 😅 Thank you so much Joe and Produce Like A Pro Team 💪🏻❤️🙏🏻
Awesome to hear. Thank you for watching!
Thanks so much Mr. Carrel. This was just an amazing lesson. I always have hard time getting those voices blending together - 3 up to 8 - and you showed me the way. How would you deal mixing a trio or quartet when sometimes singing the same notes and suddenly they split? Great Masterclass!
Hey, thank you for watching Francisco! That’s actually a great question. Inherently, when a trio or a quartet go to unison for a line or two it seems like the level jumps in volume to the listener. So I keep my equal blend, but I turn down the volume on my vocal group master by 1-2DB or whatever is needed. That way my level seems to stay in the right place for the listener, but it is also hitting my compression going into that group master the same. Hope that makes sense.
Yes, thanks for the answer. It makes sense. As you said it all comes down to get those levels perfectly on place thru rhe entire song, with the use of automation to glue everything together, capturing the listener from start to end. Thanks again.
Good stuff!
Joe is the best!
🎉🎉 thank you buddy 🎉
Wonderfull tutorial. I watched alot of TH-cam-tutorials with Joe as a host and it has always been interesting. I would love to hear his approach to drums within a country context.
Then you shall have it 👊🏼👊🏼✌🏼✌🏼
Nice video. Thank you!
Love it! Videos from Joe have been some of my favorites ever!
For more standard songs with a lead vocal and background vocals, he mentioned changing the release time to differentiate the lead from the BGVs. Would you slow down the release time on the BGVs to push them back behind the lead a little more? Because if I'm understanding that right, that's genius.
Thanks for watching Drew! Yes I would typically adjust the attack and release so they are smoother and less punchy than the lead. Sometimes that’s just as simple as putting something slower like a 2a or 3a on instead of an 1176. Best wishes 🎉
thanks so much for the content joe. it was really insightfull. it was really awesome you talked so much about the real in depth automation you do and whats driving your decisions as you do it.

Fantastic video!! Thank you
Thank you for watching!
Interesting that you use an SSL channel compressor with fast attack on the harmony bus. To accomplish something similar I typically automate the harmony bus and just ride the phrasing. I'll have to try your trick and see if it works for me, though I have to admit I'm an automation junky and once you get used to that degree of detailed control it's hard to let go of. :)
Hey Darrell, thank you for watching. Yeah give it a shot. What you may find is since the difference is literally 29 ms that it is something that even our automation can’t quite accomplish in the same way. Of course I automate as well, but that’s an extra layer of enhancement I can’t get another way. Best of luck 🎉🎉
Awesome tutorial! I would love to hear more on that same song regarding vocal FX processing. Maybe how you use fx to make those vocals "larger then life", but in such a way as to not clutter the song nor the rest of the trio.
Great feedback Campbell. I will definitely add some videos about FX into my list. Thank you for watching. 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
