  • In this (20+/- min) video, I show how to create custom linetypes in AutoCAD Civil 3D. I also walk through how to make this new custom content more portable such that it can be easily shared with others.

Top video and tutorial to explain a topic that has at times caused a lot of frustration and time lost, thanks Jerry and CivilImmersion.

Outstanding. You guys at Civil Immersion have a great way of taking something we may think we're familiar enough with and showing us how to actually do it right, and do it well--and in the most clear, easy to understand way! Thank you.

I meant from Jerry or Jeff. They make the best guides and have been hoping for one on linetypes for awhile :)

Hi. How would you create a new linetype with 2 parallel lines? Multiline tool isn´t an option, bc I need a new linetype to apply to several lines already drawn in the dwg. TIA.

How big the text needs to be ? I always have a hard time creating lines because the text is either to small or to big and the length of the lines will be also helpful, thanks

Dear Jerry, Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I always wanted to create my version of line type. Thanks to you, I did create simple lines very quickly. But I did try to make a Hedge line, and I failed. When I tried to create a shape, I got too few argument error messages. My subjects are only lines.

This and your 2010 video are both excellent...as far as they go. It would be nice if you made a followup showing the other half of the process - how to create the prototype lines to begin with. I am having a heck of a time figuring that bit out. Text does not align when going top to bottom or right to left; text bubbles not rendering; polylines behaving different than spline lines. Maybe it's because of Autocad 2013 not being as good as 2021, but I don't know.

This video is very helpful. It makes line type creation very easy. I do have a question after watching the video. How to create a line type with more than 1 parallel lines? Such as some pavement striping line types that have 2 longitudinal lines and pavement markers on sides or in the middle of the two lines. Thanks.

At 3:50 you actually CAN and SHOULD use the same line file name as before ... it will ask if you want to overwrite, click YES an procede.
It will overwrite the existing file with one that has the new linetype appended to your previous custom line types, automatically accomplishing "turning everything into a single linetype file" instead of copying and pasting at 11:18.
Also, if you decide to redo one of your custom linetypes, you can do the same process aagain using the same name as the linetype you wish to redfine and say Y to overwriting, it will overwrite just the one custom linetype within your custom linetypes file.
Another note, if you want indicate inches in a custom linetype file, for something like this --- 12" --- for instance, you have to use two single quotes like this '' instead of one double quote " or you could define a custom shape.
If you define a custom linetype with with arrows for flow direction and when you use it on a polyline and it is pointing the wrong direction, you can use REVERSE command on the polyline to change the direction of the custom linetype.

This is a great video very helpful thanks.
However, I am in a difficult situation and I hope that you could help me. While migrating my files from my old PC to my new one I forgot to copy the .lin and .shx files. But I have a dwg file with all my line types and their descriptions existing. Some of them don't need shapes and now I need to fix the ones that need the missing SHX. Can I somehow edit the lines types existing in the dwg file and fix them or do I have to recreate them all from scratch (names, descriptions, shapes etc..)?

Hello Mr. Bartels, Your video instruction was verry usefull. I'm using this workflow now to make some project specifyc linetypes. I've got one question though. Is it possible to create a linetype with text but the line it self needs to be an interrupted line (for example center). Is that possible? I'm trying but it does not appear... Greetings Tom

Anyone know why text wouldn't be able to be added to the line type, I am using a quotation(") so maybe that's why?

I tried embedding a solid hatch. The create shape went fine but when I inserted it, the hatch was missing. Are hatches not allowed?
