  • This Creo Parametric tutorial shows how to create an External Simplified Representation. Often, users need to create a Simplified Rep to work more efficiently, but they don't have permissions to modify the Top Level Assembly. The External Simplified Rep creates an external file that allows changes to be propagated to the master assembly.

Hi Dave...Im a bit confused using among the options simplified representation and copy geometry for a top down design approach..Whether both of these serves the same purpose for a top down design? If you can differentiate bwn these two that will be helpful for those who are new to these functionalities within Creo...Thanks

Quite simply, Simplified Reps are not a Top Down Design tool. They’re a Large Assembly Management tool. They save your computer’s RAM from having too much information in memory so it can operate faster.

Hi. Thanks for sheding light on this function which I wasn't aware of.
Are there any conflicts with using this with Windchill? Does it mean you could get updates through the "update representation" and not just through checkin if someone else is working on a parent assembly?

There are no conflicts with Windchill. You get updates the same way as any other CAD document, by updating or synchronizing your workspace. It behaves like any other model when someone is working on the parent assembly.

Hi Dave...Does the simplified representation option works for an imported (non-creo) assembly file? Also for a creo assembly file whether datums created in the original assembly be available in the simplified representation assy. file? Thanks...

      1. That's a very wide question. Depends on how it was imported. If from STEP or IGES, then it's just like a native Creo assembly. If using UNITE, it depends on how you brought it in. 2. Datums in an External Simplified Rep behave just like in a standard Simplified Rep, so it depends on the rep you apply to the component (Master, Automatic, or one of the pre Creo 4 reps).
As with using any functionality that is new to you, I recommend performing some validation testing for yourself so you are comfortable with the behavior.
