Charging 20v battery without charger why this works in description

  • What I’m holding when I say, “self explanatory “ is, two wires that are exposed on each end. (Jumper wires). The red wire that connects the two wires is there to keep + from touching -. That little 2” red wire is for safety. I mention this later in the video.
Leave everything unplugged, until you’ve made all connections. I’ve been charging my batteries this way for years. Works great.
And for those that do not know why there are more than two terminals on battery chargers, and drill batteries, also why drill battery chargers will not produce any voltage while testing with a voltage meter..
It ALL has to do with TEMPERATURE sensors in the batteries. That’s why this way works. When I place the main battery on the charger, the center terminal, as a temperature sensor, will tell the charger,
IM NOT TOO HOT, nor TOO COLD. YOUR OK TO SEND
    THE CURRENT TO THIS BATTERY.
If you want to know more about this, google: LITHIUM BATTERIES AND EXTREME TEMPERATURES WINTER SUMMER.
    Update
There is a chance of over charging the secondary battery , or piggy back battery…I have found with these dewalt chargers, the dewalt battery on the charger stops the charging process for both batteries. So for best results, be sure the dewalt battery is not as depleted as the piggy back battery. And do you can’t expect the secondary to charge fully. I don’t recommend charging two dewalt batteries with the same piggy back battery.

Anyone who finds that“Pretty self explanatory” probably wouldn’t be looking up this video in the first place if they understood that already. I feel like most of the people searching for this video are looking to learn and understand what you find to be “self explanatory”

Pause and look it's just 2 wires and on one end it has a jumper wire that connects each side

@@oleboifishin5036Not a jumper, it looks like it but it’s not connected, just keeps the leads from touching. Definitely Do Not Use A Jumper Wire.

I have a degree in electronics and I had no idea why he had a jumper wire across a battery. It needed explaining.

This works but there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, lithium batteries need to be balanced charged and these DeWalt batteries do that by utilizing the extra pins on the charger. When you connect the second battery there is no balance charging and some cells may become overcharged and some not fully charged. Second, when you connect the batteries together you really should make sure they are at the same state of charge/ voltage otherwise they will equalize by the higher voltage battery dumping too much current into the lower voltage battery. If you are doing this to get the voltage up high enough for the charger to detect that there is a battery this isn't the best way to do it but it will work, just make sure to use the original charger afterwards.

I appreciate the knowledge you’ve shared. After reading this, I tested over charging on secondary battery, and your correct about the possibility of damaged cells. I have found with these dewalt chargers, the dewalt battery on the charger stops the charging process for both batteries. So for best results, be sure the dewalt battery is not as depleted as the secondary. This should only be done if in a bind, and not recommended as a solution. Thank you again. Very helpful.

Thought that's what the bms if for. The other pins are for temperature monitoring. Especially with fast charging. If the Lithium gets too hot or cold setup would shut down. They got those thermo resistors on the batteries. Shut down when frozen is iffy though.

@@craftymulligar all of the DeWalt lithium batteries I have taken apart don't have balance circuitry. They do have the connections for each of the batteries in series and a temp sensor but that's all used by the charger. The battery itself doesn't have much protection.

@@mashedpotatoes5323 well you can see it from different points the charger my guess would take the signal from the thermistor know when to shut down. If the temp sensor wasn't there or when you use a jerry rig approach means fires can arise when battery is overheated. Unless the charger is an low current variant in which case the thermistor is irrelevant. Because it may omit that variable. Lucky for me and why I watch is because someone may have a genius approach to a problem. I think lithium batteries are dangerous but someone might give me a safe idea how I could use my tool batteries for a lighted system in which I could charge it on the fly. But they are not lifepo4 lithium. Usually the directions will tell you to wait until after you charge them because if they are already hot. Drawing current could overheat them is because that thermistor isn't active when current is drawn. So by itself just the battery circuit the thermistor is useless. That j somebody would say don't need to balance all the time guess that approach could work for a little while. Don't know why Dewalt don't have balance in the battery as much as those things cost.

To me it looks as though he is using the dewalt battery to hold the wires in. The red wire across the ends hopefully isnt actually electrically connected to them on both ends but is just a spacer bar to stop the ends from touching. It doesnt look any different to using crocodile clips and having one go from plus on charger to plus on battery and one going from neg on charger to neg on battery.

Doesn't seem Oodd to me at all, both your batteries that your manually hooked up to are both higher in charge than the Dewalt one on the charger. So it makes perfect sense that your voltage acrually went down when you hooked it to the circuit. The battery that's on the charger is putting a load on the battery your trying to "charge" except that initially it's actually charging the Dewalt one on the vheger until they balance out at which time the voltage will go back up
