Thank you so much for you all showing such kindness to Roddie. He is absolutely beaming and is even more eager to either become an archaeologist... or a prime minister....! it will forever be a special memory for him so thank you x
Whichever road he takes in life knowing history is important for if he ever was to become prime minister knowing the mistakes made in the past would keep him from remaking them thus making him more successful....keep doing what your doing to encourage him ....he seems to be a fine young man....Karl from eastern Canada 👍👍👍❤❤❤
He seems to be a lovely, intelligent little boy. Very well spoken and with enough confidence but not over-confident. Well done on the excellent parenting. I'm so glad he likes to mudlark and look for old things. We all learn so much if we find things from the past.
Why am i nearly in tears, watching the interaction with young Roddie, his eyes are shining and cheeks rosy being outside and not stuck inside glued to a screen. ❤❤❤
Thanks very special, thank you. Roddie wants to be prime minister one day and one of his manifestos is that children shouldn't play on computer games and should be outside exploring! 😂 So it's lovely to know his views encouraged
Hi Nicola, gosh meeting Roddy was such a blessing. It bought back memories of my little brother, also called Roddy, who died 2 years ago on Dec 22nd. He like me loved watching your channel and many others, and we both loved going to thrift shops too. But mudlarking was the thing that we'd watch together, when he visited, as he didn't have youtube. Thanks for reminding me of our love of this and how we found everything so interesting. ❤🎉
The brass 'whistle' is actually a bore inspection mirror, in the slot is an angled mirror which when inserted into the breech of a gun you could inspect how clean the barrel and rifling is. There would have been a chain on the ring holding a cap to go over the other end to keep it protected.
@@wulfriktheviking WOW, I've seen those hanging from a chain on soldiers uniforms but always figured it was a whistle. Makes sense to me, how cool is that! Thanks 👍
As a rockhound,I must confess that I go bananas when I see certain rocks near the find you were going after!I wish I could go with you,and pick up those stones!
Its always a joy to join in on your larks Nicola. Always something different on every one. Joined some times by lovely like minded folk. Awe and this time with Roddie. What a lovely young man he was. On a day out by the Thames with his family. A lucky find for you that day Roddie. A whole original Nicola on the foreshore. 😉 x 40:54
First, I like to say thank you for your fascinating VLOG. Secondly, your are the only one I know who might appreciate this story. Last summer I was mudlarking in a river in Vermont and I found a small piece of clay pipe stem. I was elated. Not much in terms of British mudlarking but amazing here. I put it in a "safe" place and immediately proceeded to forget where that safe place was. I looked everywhere. I despaired of ever finding it again. Then this morning, by chance, found it again in my cavernous "go bag", which I carry to work every day, and have dumped out numerous times in search of stuff. The moments later found my glasses, lost only last night, under a pile of papers that had fallen on the floor. Two amazing finds to start my day!
😂 Oscar is funnier than Syi. But Syi is sweet .Oh for the love of g! He's 🍀for you Nicola! That Leonard Cohen quote was wonderful when you found the perfect cracked pottery piece of the bird. 💞 fun ☕ & 🎂 Happy new year from Canada
Happy New Year! I’m glad that 2024 is over as I lost both my mom and dad. And my husband was battling cancer. He is now in remission. But Nicole your videos throughout the year. Made the time go smoother for me and help me through some of these tough times. I truly enjoy watching and discovering through your lens. May this new year we all be blessed with good health, joy and happiness. Keep on finding the treasures and telling there history. Much Love, from Buckeye, AZ
Im so sorry to hear you lost your Mum and Dad. That must be so difficult. Im glad your husband is in remission. Sending you and your husband love. Hugs, Nicola xxxx
Nicola I don’t think I’ve ever thanked you for always starting & ending your videos with positive messages to your viewers. You acknowledge that we might not be in a good place or things might not be going our way but you offer hope for things to get better. I just wanted to let you know I really appreciate you. A month ago yesterday my brother died. He was only 58. We were extremely close. He caught a rare pneumonia and was gone within 6 days of us knowing he was ill. I shattered my tibia/knee on 4 Jan 2024 & he died 12 Dec 2024. I hope 2025 is better I need it to be better. I’ll take one of your virtual hugs tonight, if that’s ok ✌️🤟🫶🩵🤍🥶☃️
Roddy was pleased to meet a notable mudlarker. I also love the youngsters who have the passion. Oscar is adorable with kind eyes and a rich and soothing voice. Interesting finds; the snuff box information was quite interesting.
Snuff or snoose box? My favorite find was Roddy. It pleases me to think that someday he will find his own bits of history and treasure, wherever he looks!

Great start to the year Nicola. Loved the brief chat with Roddie and the way he gave consideration to your questions before giving succinct answers. Interesting selection of finds but the best was the snuff box. Looking forward to joining you on your mudlarking outings in 2025. Keep safe and well.
That Roddie sure is a little cutie pie 🥰 !!! You made his day Nicola !!! Nice finds by everyone. Love the two little rings you found. Did you ever find out what the big clear orb in the water was & the bubble/dome shape was ? They were really cool !!! I just love watching you & your friends digging around looking for treasures & seeing what yall find. Wonderful video Nicola !!! Love to you from the USA !!! 🙂💖
Happy New Year to you all, including little Roddie - I'm sure you all made his day! Some great finds, love the snuff box! Not had the greatest start to the year but live in hope things will get better 🙂Your vids always make me smile and give me an outlet to forget my troubles for a bit, so thanks Nicola x
I love watching your videos!!! It is so wonderful to see the treasures you pull out of the mud! Pleas let Roddy (hope I spelled his name correctly) know that he was seen in Hawaii! Until I found your channel, I had no idea people did mudlarking on the Thames! Just so cool!
First of all, Happy New Year to everyone! It is certainly nice that young people have a hobby that they can learn from. Hopefully Roddie will continue to enjoy mudlarking for a long time.

Some lovely finds during these outings and really enjoyed getting to meet Oscar. He's a hoot! Thanks for taking us along for the back stories, too.
Watching this video, I realized how much I would enjoy doing what you do. Not sure there would be anything to find by the rivers near here, but certainly possible. I will take a look in the spring. But it got me thinking about where else I might do some scrounging around for cool finds of lost items.
Nicola, Thank you for bringing me up from the doldrums today. You always have a way of doing that no matter what treasures you share in your videos. I adore the little bird ceramic piece and the poem you recited. Thank you for always making me feel as if you were talking just to me when you open and close your videos - Peace.
A Very Happy New Year to you too, Nicola! The amazing, perfectly broken piece of china, with the gorgeous bird, and accompanying words by Leonard Cohen, almost brought tears to my eyes. Now,that story that I managed to delete,it was the story behind that question,’who last held this clay pipe?’
It was a story about an iron monger,he tripped over his own shoelaces whilst exiting a waterman’s boat, dropped his pipe in the River,in Greenwich.
But there was a boy who came to his place of business,a mudlark.
He would show up with a handful of metal scraps.
The iron monger took the bits of scrap, and as payment, gave the boy a boiled potato, split open,cross-wise,with a plop of butter and clotted cream.
It was a sweet story,now lost🥲
I think I ended up writing the story,it got a bit Dick Van Dyke though.
Oh well,not my best one😅
